About two months ago, I walked into a restaurant located somewhere in Lagos to pick up a bowl of Fish soup. While my soup was being prepared, I noticed a group of white folks seated at a round table and smoking cigarettes. Amidst them were two black men and a half-caste little girl who was coughing and sneezing repeatedly. This little girl, my humble self, other customers and workers in this restaurant, were all at risk of the harmful health effects of secondhand smoking.

The smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette or that is expelled to the air by a smoker is referred to as Secondhand Smoke. The inhalation of secondhand smoke otherwise known as Passive Smoking is a very significant public health hazard.

About a third of the world population is exposed to the dangers of secondhand smoking; annually, thousands of deaths have been linked to this hazard. Those particularly at risk are workers and people that hang out in bars and restaurants, children and pregnant women.

Secondhand Smoke contains about 4000 chemicals that are harmful to health. 69 of these chemicals are carcinogens (cancer- causing) and others are toxins that have been scientifically proven to cause various diseases in humans and even animals. They include hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, tar, benzene, ammonia e.t.c.

Diseases caused by these chemicals range from cancers (lung, bladder, breast, kidney, leukaemia e.t.c), respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema e.t.c, coronary artery disease and stroke, to middle ear infections, sudden infant death syndrome, aggravation of asthma in children and miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women and erectile dysfunction in men.

There are no safe limits to exposure to secondhand smoke. Children are very vulnerable because of their underdeveloped immune system. They are not only exposed at bars and restaurants, they are also exposed when they live with people that smoke. This is because the chemicals in Secondhand Smoke can stick to clothes, hair, nails, skin and even cars (for several months), and children and pregnant women  can easily acquire these chemicals from a smoker.

Studies have shown that 13% of all middle ear infections in children are caused by secondhand smoking. Passive smoking increases the risk of coronary artery disease by 30%, and also increases the risk of lung cancer and stroke. Over 3000 non-smokers die every year from lung cancer caused by secondhand smoking. Carbon monoxide in secondhand smoke is a known cause of growth retardation and developmental toxicity in unborn babies. Similarly, benzene causes chromosomal abnormalities in fetuses.

Since smokers are responsible for their health despite their knowledge of the health damaging effects of tobacco smoking, the health of non-smokers should be protected not only by the smokers but also by the law.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) through the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) has come up with some guidelines to help protect us from the harmful effects of secondhand smoking. These guidelines are part of the articles of the FCTC, which is a treaty with 168 countries (Nigeria inclusive) as signatories.

Several countries are protecting their citizens through effective legislation and enforcement of the FCTC articles to achieve 100% smoke-free public places. Top on the list of such countries are Norway, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, USA, Italy, New Zealand e.t.c. In Africa, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda have been able to enact smoke-free policies, though the enforcement of these policies is still relatively weak. Similarly in Nigeria, the FCT, Osun state and Lagos state have all enacted smoke-free legislation sometime in the past, the enforcement of this law is extremely weak.

Generally speaking, Nigerians are still exposed to dangers of Secondhand Smoking as the Nigerian National Tobacco Bill (NTCB) is still pending in the National Assembly and yet to be passed into law.

Naturally, the tobacco industry is opposed to the passage of this bill and will continue to benefit tremendously from its delayed passage, all at the expense of the health of Nigerians (smokers and non-smokers).

Several arguments have been brought forward to oppose the enactment of this bill. One of such is the issue of unemployment that could arise from an enforcement of 100% smoke-free public places. Evidence based research in countries where these laws have been enacted shows that it does not portend any negative economic impact and some long-term economic gains were even noted.

Conversely, evidence shows that smoke-free legislation reduces the number of hospital admissions for heart disease. A study carried out at the University of California, USA in 2009, showed a 15% decline in heart-attack hospitalizations in the first year after smoke-free legislation was passed, and 36% after three years. A similar study also shows that women, non-smokers, and people under age 60 had the most reduction in risk of heart attack.

Double ventilation and designated smoking rooms are other alternatives suggested by the tobacco industry. Studies have shown that all these are ineffective in reducing the harm caused by passive smoking, as the secondhand smoke sticks to surfaces and leave toxins behind for several months. Also, smoke travels from smoking sections to non-smoking sections of restaurants and bars, leaving both staff and customers unprotected. Workers at designated smoking rooms would still be at risk and there is no adequate ventilation system in the world that can completely remove secondhand smoke. The fact that people cannot see or smell secondhand smoke does not guarantee their protection against its dangers.

This brings me to the story of Heather Crowe, who suffered from lung cancer and died in 2006, at the age of 57. She worked for several years as a waitress in a Canadian restaurant and was exposed to secondhand smoking for that long. Shortly after she was diagnosed, she pioneered a nationwide campaign against secondhand smoking. Today, Canadian citizens are protected from the deadly claws of secondhand smoking by the effective legislation and enforcement of 100% smoke-free public places.

The importance of the effective passage and enforcement of the Nigerian National Tobacco Control Bill cannot be overemphasized. We all have a role to play, our legislators have within their hands, the power to save our generation from the scourge of the tobacco industry. The government has a huge responsibility in protecting our children, pregnant women, workers at bars and restaurants and the entire population from the dangers of secondhand smoking. The clock is ticking and more lives will be lost if no action is taken.

From http://www.childhood-leukemia.com/news/us-cancer-rates-falling/

Overall, cancer death rates fell 2 percent per year from 2001 to 2005 in men and 1.6 percent per year from 2002 to 2005 in women. By comparison, between 1993 and 2001, overall death rates in men declined 1.5 percent per year and, between 1994 and 2002, 0.8 percent in women.

“We continue to see a decrease in death rates from cancer in both men and women and this is mainly because of prevention – mostly a reduction in smoking rates; detection which includes screening for colorectal cancer, for breast cancer and for cervical cancer; and also improved treatment,” said report author Ahmedin Jemal, strategic director for cancer surveillance at the American Cancer Society.

“To put this in perspective, the number of lives saved is more than the population of Washington, D.C.,” said Dr. Louis M. Weiner, director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University. “In my mind, that’s a cause for some celebration. However, there are some sobering trends that we have to be aware of. The death rate for cardiovascular disease has dropped much more dramatically over that period than has the death rate from cancer, indicating the difficulty of developing new strategies to reduce the incidence of cancer and also to treat it more effectively. This is a very complex set of diseases. While we have come a long way, we have a lot further to go.”

Hopefully, continued reductions in smoking rates, especially among women, should push cancer rates further down in the future, the researchers noted.

Although some 45 million Americans continue to smoke, for a prevalence rate of about 20 percent, “smoking prevalence is going in the right direction,” Jemal said. “We’re going to see a reduction in lung cancer death rates, although I don’t know when it might be. In particular, we will see a reduction in cancer death rates among women that’s going to drive [down] the overall cancer death rate.”

Better screening could also further fuel the trend. Only 50 percent of Americans over the age of 50 currently get regular screening for colorectal cancer, he said.

Here is a summary of the report’s findings:

* In 2009, an estimated 1,479,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. (766,130 in men and 713,220 in women) and 562,340 people will die of the disease (292,540 men and 269,800 women). This means 1,500 deaths from cancer every day).

* Between 2001 and 2005, the incidence of cancer in men declined by 1.8 percent per year; from 1998 to 2005 the incidence rate in women dropped 0.6 percent per year. In men, the gains were largely as a result of decreases in the incidence of lung, prostate and colorectal cancer (the three most common cancers). In women, the decline was largely attributable to declines in both breast and colorectal cancer, the two most common tumor types in women.

* Cancer death rates dropped by 11.4 percent for women between 1991 and 2005, with a 37 percent decline in deaths from breast cancer and a 24 percent decrease in deaths from colorectal cancer.

* The three leading cancer killers in men are lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. In women, they are lung (accounting for 26 percent of all cancer deaths), breast and colorectal cancer.

* Men have a 44 percent chance of developing cancer during their lifetime and women a 37 percent chance, although women are more likely to have the disease earlier (before age 60).

* Lung cancer shows the greatest regional variation in cancer incidence, ranging from a low of 39.6 cases per 100,000 in men and 22.4 per 100,000 in women in Utah to 136.2 in men and 76.2 in women in Kentucky. These statistics correlate directly to smoking rates in the two states, with Utah having the lowest prevalence in adult smoking in the country, and Kentucky the highest.

* Blacks still assume a disproportionate share of the cancer burden, with black men being 18 percent more likely to develop cancer and 36 percent more likely to die. Black women have a 6 percent lower incidence rate but this is more than made up for with a death rate, which is 17 percent higher than that seen in white women.

* The five-year survival rate for children with cancer is now 80 percent, up from only 58 percent for those diagnosed in the mid-1970s. But cancer is still the second leading cause of death in youngsters aged 1 to 14 (after accidents), with leukemia being the most common cancer diagnosed.

* And in a special section, the report finds that cancer survivors are about 14 percent more likely to develop a new cancer than individuals who have never had a cancer diagnosis; almost 900,000 cancer survivors have been diagnosed with more than one cancer. Patients diagnosed with tobacco-related cancers, such as cancers of the oral cavity, lung, esophagus, kidney, and urinary bladder, have the highest risk for a second cancer because smoking is a risk factor for at least 15 types of cancer. Breast cancer survivors comprise almost half of women who develop a second cancer.

Unfortunately, cancer remains the leading killer (surpassing heart disease) for persons under 85, and one-quarter of deaths in the United States still come from cancer, the report stated.

“It’s good news that the death rates for the most common cancers are on the decline, but there are still too many Americans dying of cancer every year,” said Dr. Alan Astrow, director of medical oncology and hematology at Maimonides Cancer Center in New York City. “It’s troubling that African-Americans continue to experience higher rates of mortality from cancer than whites. It’s also troubling that Americans with less education have higher death rates. There are continued high rates of deaths from lung cancer. It’s hard to feel good about 160,000 Americans dying of lung cancer every year. That’s a disturbing statistics which we, as a nation, need to address.”

The report appears online and in the July/August print issue of CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

If you have ever tired to give up smoking you will know that it’s harder than most other things in life. For me it felt like the cigarettes where calling to me with the volume set to 11 and that is why I found self hypnosis stop smoking tricks such a massive aid.

TWO BIG REASONS WHY PEOPLE SMOKE

1. Addiction – in fact this is only a little hunger in your belly that starts to go after a couple of days.

2. Brian washing – this is the BIG one. Have you ever tried to give up then gone to a party and failed. That is because you have been brainwashed into thinking that you cannot have a good time without smoke and that thought is terribly depressing.

These two forces combined make a very powerful urge to keep smoking. But when someone is diagnosed with cancer they are able to stop easily. Why?

Because now they have a great reason…

THE FIRST STEP BEFORE SELF HYPNOSIS IS CREATING A MASSIVE DESIRE TO QUIT.

The reason that self hypnosis works so well is that it lets you give up using the cold turkey method.

This is massive….

Without doubt the cold turkey method is they key to anyone giving up fast. The reason for that is once you stop smoking and taking nicotine completely the cravings will ease in a matter of days.

If you tease yourself with patches or gum for months you will always have that little desire and it could bubble over at any time.

So once you go for the cold turkey method you just need to beat those times when you had a deep habit and enjoyment for smoking.

HOW CAN SELF HYPNOSIS HELP?

The key to self hypnosis in helping you with the cold turkey method is that it builds your confidence in being able to go without those most enjoyed cigarettes.

You work every day on the habits and things get a lot easier.

You can forget about binge eating and being crabby because those symptoms won’t be their with self hypnosis.

The thing that really helped me when I wanted a cigarette more than anything else was to listen through to my self hypnosis CD a few times before lighting up. Every single time I did this the craving would go and it helped me get through some tight spots.

A good hypnosis CD can help you beat that little monster inside trying to rob you of life.

Legitimate Online Cigarette Sales

Suddenly smoking seems to be such and important issue in India because of the countrywide ban on the deadly habit all public places and offices. Is this ban justified? Definitely. Compared to other countries who have banned smoking in public places, Indians were free to smoke as and when they wished, risking hundreds of lives. This will now end, hopefully. Legitimate Online Cigarette Sales

Agreed that when a person smokes, he or she is solely responsible for their health. Why should it trouble others if someone is spoiling their health? But do they have the right to endanger the lives of others? Medical evidence has shown that the dangers and health problems associated with passive smoking is almost the same as that of regular smoking and this is the main reason why the Government of India and put a nationwide ban on smoking. Kudos to Dr. Ramadoss, the Union Health Minister, for his efforts in bringing up the issue of smoking.

People, especially young children, are picking up smoking like never before leading to more and more health concerns. A major inspiration for them to start smoking is through films and media. As film stars have a huge fan following, their actions and on-screen mannerisms are often aped. Likewise, a popular actor when smoking on screen can unintentionally inspire many other fans to start smoking. This fact quite fully justifies the ban on on-screen smoking on television and films. Legitimate Online Cigarette Sales

However, the point about banning smoking in films such like taking away freedom of art and expression. Most directors and actors smoke on screen to portray certain characteristics in a particular character and by banning smoking, they have limited one aspect of characterisation. If smoking is an issue, then alcoholism, and so many other evils are equally important issues and banning these will not solve the problem, or even limit it.

Not surprisingly, a poll conducted by a popular Indian daily revealed that almost 84% of it’s readers are quite happy with the smoking ban. In addition to this, many popular celebrities and other figures are endorsing the ban, so that the public takes it more seriously. Sadly, officials in the country need to be informed of this. Following the day after the ban was imposed, several Indians were booked, however the officials who booked them were not aware of the rules of the ban themselves. This is indeed a sad comment on the law enforcement service in the country.

There will always be a debate about the culture of smoking, especially since the country has a population of an estimated 120 million smokers, one of the largest in the world. We can only hope, pray or speculate that positive results can be achieved by imposing smoking bans. Legitimate Online Cigarette Sales

Smoking/inhaling: Burning or vaporizing cannabis and inhaling the smoke into the lungs is the fastest route to the blood stream. Conventional wisdom is that holding in the smoke increases the effects felt. Recent research shows the opposite; it causes more harm to the lungs without increasing the amount of THC absorbed. Studies done in Australia indicate that 95% of the THC in cannabis is absorbed in the first few seconds of inhaling. Holding in the smoke longer just allows more tar and other noxious chemicals to be absorbed. Take small, shallow puffs rather than deep inhalations.

Irritation of the throat and lungs is one of the most obvious adverse effects to the marijuana smoker as is the inevitable cough upon inhaling. The cough is the body’s reaction to the irritation of the numerous constituents of the smoke. Prolonged and repeated exposure to these irritants can lower resistance to, and aggravate infections from viruses, bacteria, or fungi. The lesser coughing, the safer the smoke. The fewer puffs the better; the more potent the cannabis used is the fewer puffs required. For these reasons, it is preferable to use only the more potent flower tops, or high grade hash for smoking use.

Despite the obvious dangers of inhaling hot smoke, there is evidence that in some cases (ie. Asthma) smoking could be a beneficial medical use of cannabis. Another advantage of smoking and learning how to grow weed is that it allows the user to control their dosage better as the effects are almost immediate, unlike when eating, or using THC in pill or spray form.

In general however, smoking is not the best way to take cannabis, especially for pain, being a less efficient use of the herb than eating. However, many medical users find they appreciate the immediate and pleasurable effects of smoking cannabis and the harm of smoking can be reduced in various ways. One alternative to inhaling smoke is to release the THC through Vaporization; inhaling vapor rather than smoke, see vaporization.

Joints: Smoking cannabis in ‘joints’ is one of the least harmful ways of smoking. A loose, fat joint is preferable to a thin one because the temperature of the smoke is lower in a thick joint. Mixing cannabis with tobacco counteracts the positive effects of THC. Some research suggests that Cannabis may actually off set some of the harmful effects of tobacco but there is also evidence that the relaxing effects of cannabis on the lungs allows the toxins in tobacco to get in deeper. There is evidence that a thin joint gives a more stimulating ‘high’, while a fat joint has a more sedative effect (due to different burn temp in ‘fat’ or ‘thin’ joints). When learning how to grow weed, avoid rolling papers with ‘strawberry’tasting chemicals and the like, ‘rainbows’ and any use of colored inks.

Pipes and Bongs: Many ingeniously designed products are on the market that claim to offer a cooler smoke but they are not all safe or efficient to use. Avoid wood, aluminium or plastic materials. Use glass, stainless steel or brass pipes and bongs.

Water pipes: Recent research suggests that water pipes are the most harmful and least efficient methods of smoking cannabis. The water absorbs a great deal of the THC in the smoke (up to 50%!), increasing the amount of tar the smoker must ingest to get the desired result. Using a water pipe with a mouthpiece less than 20cm from the water level can allow water vapor and water drops to enter the lungs.

Vaporization: Using a vaporizer which heats but does not burn the cannabis, is an alternative to smoking. The process involves releasing the THC as vapor which is inhaled rather than smoke. The effect is ‘clearer’ and it is far more economical and reduces the exposure of the throat and lungs to products of burning. Vaporization works because THC, the active ingredient of cannabis, is a resin that vaporizes at a lower combustion (burning) point than cellulose.

You can make your own vaporizer very cheaply or buy various types starting at around £35 up to £300+ for the ‘hospital standard’ ‘Volcano’. High heat destroys some of the THC in smoked cannabis (estimates vary). Vaporizers heat it more gently; the THC molecules decarboxylate and evaporate in a whitish vapor. A problem with vaporizers is with correct use. Many users and people learning how to grow weed tend to overheat and consequently burn the stuff. They are now ‘smoking’ not ‘vaporizing’ the cannabis, often without realizing – and just as many toxic tars are released as smoking in a pipe.

Vaporizers sometimes fail to satisfy long time recreational smokers who associate burning lungs with getting high. They distrust the incredibly smooth taste of the vapors, and they don’t like waiting 20 seconds to 1 minute for each hit. However they always like the fact that their supply seems to last up to four times as long because valorization wastes so little of the active ingredients lost through smoking. Some regular users of vaporizers have complained that they produce a fine dust along with the vapor. This can’t be good and they should maybe be fitted with a filter system but vaporizers are still the safest way to consume cannabis using heat.

Eating or drinking: Simply sucking a small piece of hashish or eating cannabis prepared as a cake, drink or other

food is a very effective and economical method of using cannabis. The effects take up to an hour and last 4-12 hours. Over dose is possible by eating too much (see ‘Over-Dosage’). This could result in an unpleasant ‘whirlingpit’ feeling but no lasting physical damage. If in doubt ‘self-titrate’ the dose; experiment with a little, and then a little more. More worrying are the dangers of adulteration and infection encouraged by the unregulated trade in cannabis. These include smuggling methods and profiteering practices which can make eating the resulting product totally undesirable. In general avoid eating most hash especially ‘Soap Bar’ and ‘Manali’ or ‘Squiggie’ black. Eating Hemp seeds (see ‘Hemp Seed & Nutrition’) or their oil (which have no THC content) is a very valuable source of nutrition; a quality which can have considerable medical value and contribute to general well being.

Creams and lotions: Applied on the skin to treat complaints ranging from muscle pain and/or tremors to ache. You can make these yourself. The simplest way to do this is to put leaves and buds of cannabis into a bottle filled with surgical alcohol available in any chemist. Leave in a dark place for 1-3 weeks, shaking every day or as often as possible, then use to rub on area suffering from pain.

Tinctures: The active ingredients of the plant are extracted as oil and can then be used either as drops taken orally, or the ingredient for creams and lotions to be rubbed on the skin to relieve pain and other symptoms. Cannabis Tincture was available by prescription for medical purposes in Britain until 1971.

The World of Weeds

There are tons of kinds of marijuana available everywhere. Basically, marijuana is divided into two categories: Sativa and Indica. Sativa is a kind of marijuana which is taller and bigger when compared to Indica. The buds of Sativa are also bigger but the density is lesser. What is good about Sativa is that, it is not smelly and it takes a longer time to flower which is from nine to ten weeks. On the other hand, Indica is smaller and shorter. It is denser and smellier but the period for it to fl

Marijuana or cannabis is a plant that can induce hallucinations in an individual. During the 1970s, smoking cannabis became extremely popular and many people ended up addicted to it. Just like smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol, people who have cannabis addiction experience emotions like depression, anxiety and sadness. By smoking cannabis, they feel better about themselves. It becomes an escape for them and makes them forget how miserable they are.

Although considered to be relatively harmless, cannabis can be very addictive especially for people who have issues with control. If you have been smoking pot and find yourself plagued with intense cravings to do it as frequently as possible, you might already have cannabis addiction. If you admit it, you will be surprised about the signs and symptoms of addiction that you ignored before such as lying about it, feeling anxious when not doing it and smoking cannabis in the most unlikely places.

If you do not treat your cannabis addiction, it would certainly destroy every aspect of your life including work, family and friends. The problem with all addictions is that it is difficult. The withdrawal symptoms alone will make you physically ill, making you want to give up quitting. You can expect to be irritable and unfriendly. The trick is being motivated and committed about quitting. Even if it is hard, you know you are doing it to be healthier.

Relaxing exercises can help you feel less anxious. You should also try to sleep well and drink plenty of fluid. Being healthy will make you feel more motivated and you will be able to manage your withdrawal symptoms more effectively. On the other hand, people who have had cannabis addiction for a longer time would find it very difficult to give it up. Seeking professional help maybe the only option left for these people.

There are rehabilitation centers that you can go to in order to stop cannabis addiction. These centers will provide you with counseling as well as medical treatment to manage the withdrawal symptoms. The treatments in these centers are usually designed to determine what the real reason behind the cannabis addiction is; and try to help you see that your problems will never be solved by smoking cannabis.

It would basically be a rehabilitation of the body as well as the mind. For others, hypnotherapy is seen as more effective. It doesn’t require you to leave home and provides faster results.

Smoking has become the affliction of a large magnitude of people and others seem to be joining the smoke bandwagon at an alarming rate. Smoking has become a very common sight with one out of every fifth person being a smoker. The trend of smoking has become very common among teenagers also. The problems one gets due to smoking are many, but they do not seem to encourage people to stop smoking or deter people for starting to smoke. The hazardous effects of smoking are many, but people do not seem to be paying heed; the tobacco companies seem to be the only one is reaping the rewards out of smoking.

Since tobacco was born, it has been a few companies dominate the tobacco industry. These companies control most of the production and distribution around the world. They are quick to adapt to their policies and tactics to conform to the regulations set by the government and cater to the needs of the ever-increasing number of smokers around the world.

Tobacco companies of the world

A few companies hold the tobacco production and control of tobacco; the three largest companies sell close to two thirds of the entire supply. The stagnation in demand has prompted them to explore new markets.

The government is in a predicament since the tobacco industry accounts for a vast amount of jobs, but it also has to protect the health of its citizens. The government has tried to cut down on smokers by increasing the taxes imposed on them. By increasing the taxes on tobacco products and leveling higher duties on the companies, the companies are forced to raise the prices, which indirectly reduce use; since higher priced goods will be used less often. There is not much the government can do since tobacco is not a banned product.

The large companies also diversify their business to keep abreast in the market. They use various ways the companies diversify.

By market segments: Products are usually divided into categories, from high priced premium cigarettes to low and middle class of cigarettes. Companies with big brand names sell premium high priced cigarettes but also expand in to lower class sales to protect them from susceptibility. A decline in sales of premium cigarettes will be ploughed back by the sales in the lower or middle brands of cigarettes.

By target group: Every cigarette has its target group. By creating a new target group, the company can raise its overall market share. Thus the need to branch out into women cigarettes and target young people.

This targeting of women and youngsters has been seen in bad light. The tobacco industry has long targeted young people with its advertising and promotional campaigns. One of the most memorable, “Joe Camel” campaign initiated by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, helped generate public outrage against tobacco company efforts to reach young audiences and it is no longer used. The reason is obvious, most people start smoking at an early age. Getting a hold on a new segment will increase its share in the market.

Women are also a segment that the industries try to win over. Cigarettes for women are put forward as a symbol of liberation and some even shown in the light of slimming products. Manufacturers produce (long, slim) cigarettes especially for women. Perfumed or scented cigarettes with exotic flavors are targeted at women. Cigarettes usually have the word “slim” or “lights” to attract women consumers. Minorities are also a target for the tobacco industry.

Diversification by tobacco products: cigarettes companies also try to branch out into other tobacco products. For example, Imperial tobacco has decided to branch out into the roll your own segment; it dominates both the tobacco and the paper for this segment.

Diversification by non-tobacco products: food seems to be the favorite for companies seeking to diversify. R.J. Reynolds bought Nabisco (which, in turn, was later acquired by Kraft) owned by Philip Morris. Japan Tobacco derives a (small) part of its sales from food. Logistics and wholesaling are another favorite

Austria Tabak, wholesaling of tobacco and other products (and the operation of vending machines) makes up a large share of turnover. Over 20 per cent of Altadis’ earnings originate in its logistics division. Skandinavisk Tobakskompagni owns the largest wholesaler of consumer goods in Denmark. BAT tried financial services (but, since 1998, is a pure tobacco company).

Diversification into food and other activities makes the tobacco companies less dependent on (slow-growing) sales of tobacco products. However, the profit margins in these industry are usually well below those attained in tobacco processing. Producing and marketing cigarettes remain the more lucrative activity.

Incase of diversification by geographical market, OECD-based tobacco companies are keen to reduce their dependence on their stagnant home markets and establish a presence in markets where growth is above average. After having started business in many markets in Latin

America, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Central Asian republics in the 1990s, their center of attention is shifting to the Far East. All the major tobacco companies now have a presence in Poland, Russia and the Central Asian republics. Austria Tabak, which gained a presence in

Estonia when it acquired the cigarette activities of Swedish Match also has a 67 per cent market share in Guinea. The company was considering entering Asian markets when it was taken over by Gallaher in June 2001. Through this take-over and the acquisition in 2000 of Liggett-Ducat, the Moscow cigarette maker, Gallaher greatly reduced its dependence on the UK market. Similarly, Japan Tobacco became a world player when it acquired the international activities of R.J. Reynolds. Thanks to a relentless internationalization drive, Germany’s Reemtsma now sells less than one-third of its total in its home market (compared to over 60 per cent in 1991) (see also figure 6). It is now on the go in several Central and Eastern European countries and, in 1999, it acquired Cambodia’s Paradise Tobacco Company.

The government.

A predicament is generally faced by the Governments all across the world. On the one hand, tobacco-growing and processing can makes a large contribution to employment, tax revenue and foreign exchange receipts. In many developing and formerly centrally planned economies, the tobacco companies have made sizeable and most welcome investments when other investors were disinclined to do so. On the other hand, governments have the responsibility to protect the population’s health. Smoking is harmful to health and treating people for smoking-related illnesses is expensive. This can lead to heated debates within the same government as each sector defends the interests it believes it should represent.

The economic importance of tobacco growing and processing differs from country to country. At the national level, cigarette (sales and import) tax can be a main source of government revenue. In Russia, cigarette tax revenue contributes around 8 per cent to the financing of the state budget.

When the government owns the industry, it receives profits in addition to tax. That is why, in so many countries, State monopolies continue to control cigarette trade and production. In China, proceeds from state-owned CNTC amounted to the equivalent of US,000 million in 1999. CNTC has been the Chinese State’s top revenue generator for years. Japan Tobacco earned more than US0 million for the Japanese State in the fiscal year ending March 2000. The monopolies can also play a social function. In Italy, several of the state monopoly’s factories are to be found in areas of high unemployment.

Then there are balance of payments issues to mull over, many low-income countries rely on the export of cash crops such as tobacco to pay for the service of their foreign debt.

Tobacco exports made up close to 10 per cent of Cuba’s exports in 1997-98. In the case of

Tanzania it was 15 per cent, In Zimbabwe over 25 per cent and in Malawi tobacco exports made up two-thirds of commodity exports.

Citizens smoke. But, if they smoke domestically produced cigarettes, using homegrown tobacco or use imported cigarettes and tobaccos can make a large difference when foreign exchange is scarce. That explains why so many countries try to restrict the imports of cigarettes and encourage domestic producers to use local tobaccos, for example, by providing a favorable tax treatment to companies that use a minimum percentage of homegrown tobaccos. The cigarette companies have also been a key source of investment in the formerly centrally planned countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. When others were disinclined to invest, those companies saw the possibilities offered by a blend of pent-up consumer demand, outdated production facilities and the association with independence and “western style” living that so appealed to the people in these countries after many years of central planning and little consumer choice. After having lobbied successfully for the reduction of restrictions of Asian markets such as Japan and the Republic of Korea, the large tobacco companies are eagerly waiting for the opening up of the other economies (notably China) that continue to restrict imports from and/or investments by foreign tobacco companies.

Tobacco growing, processing and exports can thus make a significant involvement to national employment and national income. Yet, however important tobacco growing and processing may be at the national level, its full economic and social significance is best grasped at the micro or regional level. In some regions, tobacco is grown side by side with the crop, which is the main source of income; its contribution to overall income is modest. However, in many others, tobacco is a main source of income and employment.

Tobacco growing and tobacco processing may bring substantial economic and social benefits, but the treatment of smoking-related illness is costly. Cigarette smoking causes cancer. It is addictive. The WHO estimates that tobacco products cause around 3 million deaths per year. Cigarette smoking is the major cause of preventable mortality in developed countries. In the mid-1990s, about 25 per cent of all male deaths in developed countries were due to smoking. Among men aged 35-69 years, more than one-third of all deaths were caused by smoking. The costs of treating all these people are clearly enormous (WHO, 1997).

So far, smoking has not had the same impact on mortality among women and among people from developing countries. There is an approximate 30-40 year time lag between the onset of persistent smoking and deaths from smoking. The effects of the greater incidence of smoking between these two groups will thus be felt with a lag, but it seems reasonable to believe that its impact on them will not differ fundamentally from that on developed country males.

It may be argued that smokers willingly take a certain health risk when enjoying their smoke. They like the taste and all the other things that they associate with smoking. Nevertheless, this does not apply to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or “second-hand smoke”.

Smoke gets in your eyes your clothes. Moreover, it gets in your lungs. Non-smokers cannot escape from smoke in badly ventilated areas. To be exposed to other people’s tobacco smoke can be a nuisance in addition to being a health risk for non-smokers.

Governments and conflicting pressures: How do they get by?

In practice, governments have opted for several strategies (which are often followed simultaneously). A recent strategy consists of seeking compensation for the costs of treating smoking-related illnesses. It has been followed with success in the United States, as we saw in section 3.4. Governments also set rules regarding the maximum content of hazardous substances in cigarettes. Most of all, however, governments try to discourage demand for what is, as the industry does not tire of telling us, essentially a legal product.

This is done in a variety of ways, with some governments applying particular vigor and others taking a more relaxed approach. Overall, however, the trend is clear: governments’ rules on smoking are becoming ever more restrictive. The use of tobacco products is being discouraged in several ways.

Limitation of the space where smoking is allowed.

This is done above all to protect non-smokers from involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke. Smoking is being prohibited in public places (particularly health care and educational facilities) and in mass transport. Legislation requires restaurants to reserve space for non-smokers.

Limitation by age group

It is prohibited to sell tobacco products to people under a certain age.

Limitations on points of sale.

The use of vending machines is being restricted because these cannot discriminate against sales to young people.

Health warnings stating that tobacco is harmful to health have become obligatory.

The warnings must be placed on packets and in ads, with the authorities prescribing the text and the minimum space allotted to the warning in the ad or on the pack. Governments sponsor education and public information programs on smoking and health.

Advertising bans. Restrictions concern the location of ads, the media used (no billboards, no ads in the printed media or in cinemas), the images presented (no young people, no cigarette packets), and the time when broadcasting is allowed (not during hours when children watch television).

The manufacturers are unhappy with these restrictions, and in particular with the ban on advertising. In their view, it is not proved that such a ban discourages demand for cigarettes (as its proponents claim). They are concerned about its effect on the value of their prime asset, the brand name.

Worldwide, the tobacco-processing industry employs hundreds of thousands of people. However, due to a combination of slow demand growth, consolidation, and higher productivity, this number is unlikely to increase by much in the near future. Fewer people are needed per unit of production. The industry is becoming less intensive in the use of labor. Tobacco growing, in contrast, gives work to millions of people. It continues to be a highly labour-intensive activity. The scope for productivity increases in tobacco growing would appear to be more limited than those in tobacco processing.

Over a million people are employed in the world tobacco industry

However, of this number a high percentage is employed in just three countries: China, India and Indonesia. The large number employed in China comes as no surprise in view of the large number of cigarettes (one-third of the world total) produced there. Still, the productivity gap with the United States is striking. China produces roughly three times as many cigarettes as the US, but it needs over nine times as many people to produce them. In the other two countries, the scope for productivity improvements would appear to be even higher.

THE SCENARIO TODAY.

The situation concerning smoking are scary, if global trends continue as they are doing today by 2030 more than 8 million people will die each year from tobacco related causes-80% in the developing regions of the World. In India per example where 120 million smoke 1 in 5 men will die for smoking. Smoking is on the decline in developed nations but is on a large-scale rise in developing or underdeveloped nations. The statistics are frightening, every eight seconds someone dies from smoking; about 15 billion cigarettes are sold daily. There are 1.1 billion smokers in the world today, and if things continue as they have, that number is expected to increase to 1.6 billion by the year 2025.

Smoking and use of tobacco products is on a decline in most developed countries. However, it is on a rampant increase in other developing countries.

In the US, there has been a decrease in the number of smokers. This can be attributed to the growing awareness of the damage smoking causes to the health of the individual. There is however a sad side to the story, smoking has increased to a drastic level in other countries and the figures are staggering.

China is home to 300 million smokers who consume upwards of 1.7 trillion cigarettes a year, or 3 million cigarettes a minute. As many as 100 million Chinese men presently under the age of 30 will die from tobacco use. There are approximately 120 million smokers in India today, and it is estimated that in the year 2010 alone, there will be close to one million tobacco-related deaths among men and women age 30 to 69 in India. Worldwide, tobacco use will kill more than 175 million people between now and the year 2030. Current tobacco-related health care costs in the United States total US billion annually. Germany spends an average of US billion, and Australia, US billion each year on health care directly related to tobacco use. Health care costs associated with secondhand smoke total US billion a year in the U.S. It is estimated that as many as 500 million people alive today will be killed by tobacco use. The statistics are chilling.

One reason for the sudden spurt in the numbers in these countries may be due to the arrival of tobacco companies. The lax stand of the governments in these countries makes it a good bet to start business. The anti smoking lobbies in these countries have not been able to combat the increase. Increased awareness has made it hard for tobacco companies to work in many countries and so the tobacco companies have shifted their sights to greener pastures.

These countries have a very small anti smoking lobby and the government restrictions o them are not so tough and the government is dependent on the revenues it earns from them. Setting up business in these countries has resulted in increased used of tobacco products.

The anti smoking lobby has been very effective in curtailing the spread and increase of smoking around the world.

Advertising related to tobacco has is banned in most countries. Warnings of the harmful effects of the product have to be printed on the packet. This statutory warning is mandatory in most countries. The WHO in its Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which came into effect on 27 February 2005 has specified that all 168 countries should ban advertisements unless their constitutions forbade them to do so.

Today, we are aware of the hazards of smoking. Even though the people are aware of the harmful effects of smoking they rarely seem to pay heed. Everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, heart diseases and can shorten the life span of an individual. It is a highly addictive habit and smokers are at a risk of losing ten years of their life.

With so many smokers around the world, tobacco companies are the only ones gaining form the increase.

Smoking Cigarettes (tobacco) and Nutrition

Yes I agree- no one ever forced me to smoke- but I bought my first pack of cigarettes in the local store, and no one told me -it will make you a prisoner! They have just asked me for an ID and money/which part of it /tax/ went to our governement.

There really is no best way to stop smoking. The only “best way” is for the smoker to say, “I really, really want to quit smoking” and actually mean it. The twp main things every one else can offer is support and advice. As a smoker, be clear about why you want to quit when you listen to their advice and support, listing as many reasons as you can, and then making a plan to accomplish your goal. On the list of why you want to quit, try to include achieving better health and fitness, wanting to live longer, less risk of cancer and heart disease, no nicotine stained fingers or teeth, better smelling breath, healthier babies and setting examples for the family, healthier skin with fewer wrinkles, increased budget income, etc.

We need to prepare ourselves mentally by setting an actual date we are going to quit. Make it a special day, a day of personal achievement – it can be our birthday or anniversary; a holiday or one of our children’s birthdays; and can also be on No Smoking Day, the second Wednesday of every March. It really does not matter, as long as it means something to us. Reducing our smoking without setting a date to quit may not work, because our smoking is likely to increase once again. Be aware of the fact that it is easy to give in to temptation and start smoking again, especially when we are tense and upset. We stand to lose all that we have gained, if we have one single cigarette. And then we will have to start all over again.

Making a plan is easy – sticking to it is something else. If we were serious about wanting to quit smoking, we would follow it to the “T” – and hope to achieve our goal, by knowing what to expect and preparing ourselves to face the withdrawal symptoms. Most people find the first few days as the most difficult, with things becoming better after the first three or four days. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms may include irritation, restlessness, frustration, sleeplessness, and being “fumbly stumbly” accident-prone.

To curb these withdrawals and ease the distress, use NRT, or nicotine replacement therapy, in the form of gum, patches, lozenges, inhalers, etc. that can double our chances of success, by reducing the intensity of our cravings. Go to counseling and behavior therapy classes. Use Nicotinell, Nicorette and NiQuitin CQ as some of the nicotine product aids. Another option is to use the drug Zyban, which is available on prescription. All of these aids are available.

Regardless which NRT method we use, we need to find something to do and stay as busy as possible, to take the place of smoking. Games, woodwork, online surveys, taking extra adult classes, volunteering at literary workshops, etc. We can drink a lot of water, tea, or juice, or chew gum. Whatever we enjoy doing should be approached at this time. Try to stay busy doing what we like. To avoid weight gain that usually accompanies quitting smoking, try not to grab food instead of a cigarette, and if you do – change your diet by grabbing raw vegetables and lots of fruit, drink lots of juices and water, avoid alcohol, and exercise much more.

Avoid situations where we may be tempted to smoke such as bars, nightclubs, hotels, and certain eating establishments. All of this is common sense, but when we are in the withdrawal mode, we do not think, we react only to the pain and distress our body is going through. Care for it gently, by compensating these feelings with something health and pleasurable. Family and friends will support you to deal with nicotine withdrawal symptoms if you let them.

What are the smoking facts?  Smoking can kill you, and your cigarette addiction can also kill others.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking you need to start by changing your attitude and beliefs about your cigarette addiction.

All addicts engage in denial and rationalization.  You use these tidy bits of fiction to protect yourself from the stark reality of the smoking risks to your health and the health of those around you. Your tobacco addiction is likely accompanied some or all of the following bits of smoking fiction.  You cannot quit cigarette smoking unless you give up your denial and face the facts about smoking.

Fiction: I have the right to do what I want,  it is my body.

Fact #1: The facts about smoking reveal that your habit is contributing to air pollution, global warming, accidental poisoning, escalating  prevalence of asthma and even sudden infant death syndrome. Your addiction is harming not only you but those around you.  Your are not alone on this planet, and you are not alone in your life.  There are other people who love you and need you and your smoking is as harmful to them as it is to you.

Fiction: If I keep the windows open when I smoke in the car I am protecting the children from the harmful effects of smoke.

Fact #2: This does nothing to protect your children from the smoking risks to health. Every time you smoke a cigarette in the car they smoke it with you.

Fiction: Smoking is a bad habit.

Fact #3: Smoking is a tobacco addiction not a habit.

Fiction: Everybody smokes.

Fact #4: Everybody does not smoke.  So many people in Canada are giving up smoking that the national rate for smoking is approaching 18% . If you smoke you are in the minority not the majority.

Fiction: Smoking is cool.

Fact #5: When you smoke you do not look cool, you look stupid.  Let’s face it you have freely chosen to engage in an activity that drains your pocket book and harms your health. This decision calls your intelligence into question.  Smoking statistics in Canada show that smoking is more prevalent among the unemployed, lower income groups and populations with 12 years or less of grade school education.  Smoking doesn’t make you look cool it makes you look uneducated, unemployed, and poor.

Fiction: It is only tobacco. Its not like its heroin or anything.

Fact #6 : Nicotine is more dangerous that cocaine, heroin or alcohol when it comes to dependence. Dependence develops quickly.  The product is legal and easily available making the dependence easier to maintain. Tobacco addiction causes more health problems worldwide than heroin.

Fiction: It is legal so it can’t be that bad.

Fact #7: See smoking fact # 6

Fiction: I only smoke socially when I am with friends.

Fact #8: See smoking fact # 6. Your social smoking will likely result in a tobacco addiction.  If you value your friends do not harm them.  You have a moral obligation to protect them.

Fiction: I am still young and will quit before I get older

Fact # 9: See smoking fact # 6. Smoking statistics show that most people start their cigarette addiction when they are teenagers.

Fiction: It is hopeless, I have tried many times and I cannot quit cigarette smoking.

Fact # 10: Not everyone is successful the first time they try to quit cigarette smoking.  The facts about smoking show that most former smokers had several unsuccessful attempts before they finally overcame their tobacco addiction.  Keep trying!

Of all the known smoking risks to your health perhaps the most significant one is not facing the facts about smoking and living in a world of denial.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking your reality check should include facing the smoking facts.  This one is so important it bears repeating.

Smoking can kill you.
