Tetrahydrocannabinol is insoluble cold in water, but soluble in oil or alcohol.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active substance in cannabis, and other cannabinoids are hydrophobic oils, which are insoluble in water but soluble in lipids (oil/fat) and alcohol. Thus, using either one of these to extract THC from cannabis is required to have the cooked product be psychoactive. Furthermore, during preparation, the cannabis or its extract must be sufficiently heated or dehydrated to cause decarboxylation of its most abundant cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, into psychoactive THC.
The oil-solubility of cannabis extracts has been known since ancient times, when Sanskrit recipes from India required that the cannabis (ganja) be sautd in ghee before mixing it with other ingredients. Making a tea by boiling cannabis in water is a highly inefficient way to extract cannabinoids, although if the cannabis is of good quality and has plenty of resin on the outside, a portion of resin can be softened by the heat and float out into the water. (THC is fat soluble and needs more than just water to have a proper effect).
Some authors claim that oral consumption of cannabis, when properly cooked, is a more efficient way to absorb cannabinoids than smoking it.

Oil
“Cannaoil” or “marijuana oil” is a cooking oil based product that has been infused with cannabinoids. This can be achieved by cooking the oil at an extremely low temperature along with ground cannabis for a long period of time to allow the cannabinoids to absorb into the fat within the oils. This can be as easy as using a frying pan or pot, or using a double boiler, or the easiest method using a crock pot. Cannaoil can be used in any recipe that calls for oil that does not go above the temperature at which THC vaporizes, which is 210 degrees Celsius.
Butter

Making cannabutter
“Cannabutter” or “marijuana butter” is a butter-based emulsion which has been infused with cannabinoids. This is achieved by heating the raw cannabis along with butter and allowing the cannabinoids to be extracted by the fat. The equipment necessary for the manufacture of cannabutter can be as simple as a sauce pan and spatula or as complicated as a double-boiler, or crock pot, cheese cloth or tea strainer and funnel.
Liqueurs
Because cannabis resins are soluble in alcohol, an effective way of adding them into dishes is through cooking brandy or rum infused with cannabinoids.
Creme de Gras is a flavored liqueur made from cannabis. It can be added to coffee and other beverages.
Hash cookie

Space cake
Hash cookies, also known as space cookies, hash cakes or space cakes are relatively common in regions with liberal drug policies, including parts of Europe (particularly the Netherlands). They are bakery products made using one of the forms of cannabis, including hashish.
Hash cookies are essentially the same as marijuana cookies but are more potent. They can be seen in cake, ball, and brownie form as well. To make them, large amounts of hash (typically half a gram to as much as a gram a cookie) are baked into the product in careful steps, so that the user is able to achieve a high without smoking. Some users report that the high is different from smoking, it is usually more powerful and much longer lasting but more subtle. The high produced by hash products are generally associated with a feeling of lightness, commonly referred to as a “body high”. The main benefits to preparing these cookies is that they do not cause the respiratory system harm that smoke does and can be used in many places where smoking is not convenient, as they can easily be brought to parties, cafes, school, and work. One is not usually able to tell the difference between regular baked goods and those containing drugs before consumption, but they tend to have a slight greenish tinge with marijuana, and they often emit a faint odor. A mild flavor can be detectable if sufficient quantities are used. Many resources for recipes, preparation, and dosage are available online, though they vary greatly in effectiveness and quality.
The writer Alice B. Toklas’s inclusion of her friend Brion Gysin’s recipe for “Haschich Fudge” in her 1954 literary memoir The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook caused a sensation at the time, and led to her name becoming associated with cannabis food with the use of the phrase “Alice B. Toklas brownies” for many years afterwards. (A common eggcorn of the term is as “toke-less brownies”.)
Psychoactive effects
Eating a food can result in a similar psychoactive effect or “high” as smoking marijuana, although it may be delayed or mitigated due to slower absorption of the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) through the digestive tract. Some believe it imparts a smoother “high”. However there are accounts of stronger, longer lasting highs resulting from eating cannabis foods.[citation needed] Whereas the effects from smoking cannabis are usually felt within a few minutes, it can take up to two hours to reach full effects ingesting it.
Several possible reasons causing a different high when eating cannabis can be:
Absorption of a different ratio of cannabinoids, since easily metabolised cannabinoids will not reach the brain, or reach it in lower concentrations.
Slower plasma increase in THC concentration means that receptors and pathways in the brain which are particularly likely to downregulate well before the cannabinoids reach a high (or ‘peaky’) plasma concentration.
Different cannabinoids are released and/or created due to the pyrolysis of the plant material when smoking.
Contrary to smoking, where one can feel the high coming almost instantly; the way the THC is digested can result in a high that takes up to a couple of hours to set and can last for a much longer time. Products containing cannabis are widely available in cannabis coffee shops in the Netherlands (and various European cities), where the consumption of marijuana is effectively legal. Such products have been known to cause the user to become psychologically affected for as long as 24 hours, especially in larger doses.
Cultural influence
The brownie was used in the 1968 film I Love You, Alice B. Toklas, in which a character portrayed by Peter Sellers becomes disillusioned with his mainstream life after falling in love with a free spirit, only to become just as disillusioned with the hippie subculture. Marijuana-spiked brownies are a key plot element.

Addiction to smoking is something that affects many people around the world. With the wide availability of cigarettes in today’s world, it is extremely easy to get hooked early to nicotine and tobacco. Everyone knows that cigarettes can cause serious health problems, but still people smoke. People smoke for a whole range of reasons, but none of them can seem to put down the cigarettes when they need to. In the end, it comes down to a mental issue that prevents people from being able to stop.

People begin smoking for a bunch of different reasons. Some do it because smoking is “cool”, while others do it because their friends are doing it. Few people simply go into a store and decide that they would like to buy a pack of cigarettes. It just does not happen that way. Outside influences are very important to smoking addiction. Because of this, smoking addiction is something that must be broken at the mindset level. If smoking makes you feel tough or cool, and you can’t stop when you should, then something is badly wrong.

Do you smoke a couple packs of cigarettes every day? Do you feel like you could put the cigarettes down for good if you absolutely had to? Most people believe that they could probably quit smoking if they absolutely had to. Then, when the time comes to stop smoking, they can’t do it. It is because they are focusing on cigarettes and the actual act of smoking. While it is true that there are chemicals within cigarettes that cause addiction issues, the mental issues play just as big of a role.

Fancy patches and special gum has been designed to help people stop smoking. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. It is just a matter of how motivated a person is in their goal to quit smoking. In my years as a hypnotherapist, I have treated people for smoking issues. Hypnosis is more effective as these physical helpers because it will help a person change their outlook and mindset.

Hypnosis is something that should strongly considered by people who feel like they can’t beat cigarettes and smoking addiction. It’s not just something that is done during a magic show. It is a real, tangible solution to awful problems that can eventually kill you. Get the information you need today in order to make a quality decision on hypnosis.

Myth 2: If I only smoke a cigarette filter, menthol, light, mild, or slim, I’m safe. Most smokers are shocked when they find out the composition of the material in a cigarette. Myth 3: If I only smoke a few cigarettes a day, was safe. Even if you only smoke one cigarette per day, smoking is still not safe. Myth 4: chewed tobacco is safe to do because you do not inhale the smoke.

Many people misunderstand the dangers of chewing tobacco. They do not understand that by chewing tobacco you become more susceptible to oral cancer, which affects Iidah, lips, cheeks, and gums. This myth is not supported by scientific research at all! A group of researchers in Stockholm, Sweden studied 135 healthy people who have never been diagnosed with high blood pressure. But after checking their blood pressure, researchers found that those who smoke or chew tobacco have blood pressure higher than those who do not do it.

Best Christmas Gift for Kids is Alcohol Free Parents

We look forward to the happiness Christmas brings, but not every home will be happy this year. This time of “good cheer” is often spoiled by a glass of “good cheer.” An alcoholic drink, consumed by a loved one, is often the reason for misery, not joy.

When I was a speaker for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, I spoke to an elementary class in Escondido California. After I spoke to the class, I received the following letter from a 9-year-old girl named Teresa Perez.

Dear Mrs. Fry

Thank you for volunteering to come to our class. You have really helped me understand that drinking is very bad and it makes you do really bad things and I would never like to die and leave my family. I really did like my dad, but one day my dad went to get a hair cut at my uncle’s house and he was walking back home because we were going to get ice cream and when he was coming back a drunk driver ran him over and he died and now I don’t have a dad and I really do miss him. I wish he did not die.

At the end of her letter she drew a picture of a car and a man lying on the ground.

The letter touched me deeply. I felt the hurt in this little girl’s life. I wondered how many more dear children, like Teresa, will lose a parent or loved one because someone decided to drink alcohol, and didn’t think of the consequences? How many more will have their lives shattered?

It is time we woke up to how our drinking habits affect others. If we’re not a part of the solution we are a part of the problem. Your social drink could be the reason your child becomes an alcoholic or a drunk driver. You could become the alcoholic or drunk driver! It’s not cool to drink alcohol!

Forty years ago smoking was considered cool, too. I remember watching James Dean with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, in the movie, Rebel Without a Cause. We teenagers thought smoking was cool and so most of us chose to smoke, just like many of our young people are doing today. What has been the result? Thousands lost their lives to the cool habit. Many more are still smoking with horrific lives, because of what tobacco has done to their bodies, and to their freedom

Cool? I don’t think so!

Are we going to let alcohol have the same disastrous affect on our young people that smoking cigarettes did to the young people of long ago?

It’s time we had a stop drinking campaign! Its time, we as adults took on the responsibility of being responsible and choose not to drink at all, for the sake of our children.

I especially appeal to you mothers. You have the most influence on you family.

This year lets give our kids a smart and wonderful Christmas gift, “the gift of alcohol-free parents!”

I don’t want any more letters from children like Teresa.

My wife and I both quit smoking for good two years ago–after being heavy smokers for nearly 30 years.  She did it her way, and I did it mine.  Both ways worked, but her way was harder and cost a bunch of money.  

My wife had tried to quit smoking before, several times, and had failed every time.  For the first big attempt at quitting smoking, she tried patches.  These seemed work for a while.  But then I found her smoking in the bathroom.  (I had been wondering why she always turned on the exhaust fan when she entered the bathroom.)  And then she admitted that those expensive nicotine patches just made her want to smoke more.  So instead of quitting or even cutting down her cigarette consumption, she wound up smoking more (but secretively this time) than she ever had.  

Then, two years ago, my wife suffered a severe back injury, and that’s what made her finally decide to quit.  While she was in flat on her fractured back in the hospital and pumped full of morphine, she had no desire for a cigarette.  But when she got home, the cravings returned full force and the battle began.  So she used the pills prescribed by the doctors.

What my wife used was a well known regimen of pills, constructed around a progression of pill ingestion, that is supposed to help with anxiety and suppress nicotine cravings.  The pills worked, I guess, but the side effects were hard to deal with.  It affected her ability to taste, and food didn’t taste right to her for about six months.  She also had frequent bad dreams–frightening, night sweat-inducing dreams that she tried to forget and was reluctant to talk about.  And to top it all off, I spent about 0 on those infernal pills.

I had tried to quit several time before, too.  I tried to do it cold turkey and just tough it out through sheer will power.  And . . . I failed miserably every time.  The first two days were always easy, but the third day–that dreadful third day–was when things got tough.  I got nervous and irritable, and I was restless.  So I drank more coffee than usual and grew even more irritable and short tempered.  And because I was jacked on caffeine, I really wanted a cigarette.  One of those times, my wife and daughter came to me and said this:  “OK, you’ve got two choices.  You can either go buy you some cigarettes–or you can find a new place to live.”  So, naturally, I got in the car, drove to the convenience store, and bought a pack of cigarettes.

When I finally did quit smoking for good, I thought I did it cold turkey through sheer will power.  Looking back now, though, I see that I didn’t really do it that way.  What happened was I had unwittingly applied some of the principles and techniques of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

I changed my self-perception and began to see myself as a non-smoker–not just a person making a mighty effort of will to reluctantly give up an incorrigible habit.  I used confidence-inspiring and success-promoting self-talk.  I began to think differently, altering my emotional responses to sensory stimuli and smoking triggers.  I examined and modeled what other people had done to successfully stop smoking.  I was unconsciously using NLP.

I wish now that I had known more about NLP and about some of the proven stop-smoking programs based on it.  It really seems to work.  And I know from our own first-hand experience that quitting by means of NLP is a lot safer and lot cheaper than the chemical-based methods.

Thinking of Having a Baby?

 

If you are a male or female and are thinking about having a family the time to stop smoking is long before conception occurs. Smoking and second hand smoke can affect your chances of conceiving and can be damaging to reproductive organs, eggs and semen. Smoking during the first trimester can result in a host of problems and issues that can impact both the expectant mother and fetus. Smoking, including the effects of second hand smoke after giving birth, can affect the health and development of the new-born baby.

 

Teratogens are drugs, chemicals, or even infections that can cause abnormal fetal development and include alcohol, carbon monoxide and nicotine. Smoking and drinking result in high levels of alcohol, nicotine and carbon monoxide in the blood stream.

 

Carbon Monoxide has a higher affinity for haemoglobin than oxygen and a pack a day smoker will have carboxyhaemoglobin levels as high as 80 ppm and if you smoke all day you always have carbon monoxide in your blood stream that can affect you, your embryo or even your chances of conceiving or delivering.

Nicotine clears the body by way of first-order kinetics. One cigarette has a half life of 2 hours, which means if you smoke during the day you always have both carbon monoxide and nicotine in your blood stream 24-7, 365 days a year. Nicotine, the main psychoactive ingredient in tobacco, readily crosses the placental barrier to cause growth and neurobehavioral abnormalities in the offspring.

Alcohol clears the blood stream slowly by way of zero-order kinetics at a constant rate of 10-15 ml per hour or 1.0 ounce of 100 proof alcohol per hour and you can’t speed up its elimination.

Smoking is bad enough but smoking and drinking is worth quitting if you want to improve your chances of becoming pregnant and having a happy healthy baby.

 

 

 

Effects of Smoking Before Pregnancy

 

Smoking can adversely affect the ability of individuals to conceive and bear children

 

Smoking decreases fertility levels in both men and women

 

Tobacco use has been shown to cause erectile dysfunction (ED) in men

 

Smoking damages sperm DNA

 

Women who smoke are roughly twice as likely to experience a delay in conception

 

Smoking can speed up the rate at which fertility declines

 

Smoking can be harmful to the female ovaries

 

The severity of damage due to smoking is proportional to the amount and length of time that a woman smokes

 

The chemicals found in cigarettes, primarily nicotine, can interfere with the female’s natural ability to produce estrogen

 

The nicotine found in cigarettes can also cause eggs to be more prone to genetic abnormalities

 

Effects of Smoking During Pregnancy

 

Early rupture of membranes and premature rupture of the amniotic sac that can induce labor before the baby is fully developed

 

Infants exposed to smoke, both during pregnancy and after birth, are found to be more at risk of SIDS due to the increased levels of nicotine often found in SIDS cases

 

Smoking nearly doubles the risk of low birthweight babies

 

Smoking during pregnancy is implicated in placenta previa, ectopic pregnancies, placental abruption and congenital heart defects

 

Women who smoke anytime during the first trimester put their fetus at a higher risk for birth defects

 

Smoking can also impair the general development of the placenta and therefore the umbilical cord (which transfers oxygen and nutrients from the mother’s blood to the placenta)

 

Smoking Effects After Pregnancy

 

Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke after birth are more likely to die of SIDS

 

Infants born to smoking mothers are at an increased risk for bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, asthma, and impaired respiratory function and slowed lung growth

 

Babies born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy may undergo withdrawal-like symptoms

Smoking behavior modification is accomplished on many levels…There is situational smoking behavior modification, habitual smoking behavior modification, and – most importantly – emotional smoking behavior modification. While the emotional aspect of modifying the behaviors that contribute to your nicotine addiction is most important, it’s better left ‘untouched’ in the initial phases of your recovery.

 

If you have just made the commitment to quit smoking, now is not the time to worry yourself with anything besides the present. At the current time, your most ideal goals are: Becoming educated on your tobacco addiction and the daily impact it has on your life and building a solid support system. Remember to only surround yourself with those who support your decision to stop smoking and discard the comments and create space between yourself and those who aren’t as supportive.

 

Quitting smoking is very much an act of forcing the body to perform something neurologically discomforting – after which you take steps toward behavior modification so you can heal from the pathological desire to ignore your daily stress factors and hard-to-feel emotions. You can, however, plant a seed for a critical change in core beliefs that will help you quit smoking by not viewing this outline as a stop smoking guide at all – rather a set of tools to provide you with constructive ways throughout the day to take control over your own life section by section, one step at a time.

 

One of the biggest obstacles smokers face is the ‘fear’ of never smoking again…You don’t have to decide to quit smoking forever…You merely need to commit to quit smoking on your designated quit date 5 minutes at a time while you take back the reigns to the state of your emotional well-being.

 

Habitual smoking behavior modification is the means of providing your hands and mouth with something besides cigarettes (exercise, healthy snacks, cool water, juice, fidgeting toys, etc.). We are going to focus more on situational smoking behavior modification – whose implementation is highly conditional. The unique situations you face throughout the day at work, at home, in public, while driving (the list could continue infinitely) all affect you differently…They each invoke their own set of emotions or stream of thoughts.

 

As a smoker, your gut instinct is to interrupt the discovery process of what is affecting you, as you immediately recognize the potential for discomfort and reach for your cigarettes. But what if you took just a moment to dive a bit deeper? Even though the individual details of each situational scenario are as variable as your individual life, there is a basic guideline for replacing your bad habit with a healthy process of examining your decisions, feelings and points of view.

 

Practice asking yourself the following questions every time you want to smoke and answering them as honestly and with as much of an open mind as possible.

 

First of all, if the thought to smoke arises in your head, ask yourself immediately, “What am I feeling?

 

Possible Answer: Fear of judgment of not being able to perform at my job, fear of economic insecurity, overwhelmed.

 

What exactly is going on right now?

 

Possible Answer: I am at work and I don’t really feel well. I have a list of assignments whose instructions are not crystal clear, and my supervisor has just reminded me of a deadline for a project I completely forgot about that’s due in an hour. Take a deep breath, refrain from smoking and think…

 

What smoking behavior modification step can I do immediately to make this situation less stressful or easier to deal with?

 

Possible Answer: Prioritize! Put first things first: I have a deadline to meet! Honesty is always the best policy. I could mislead my supervisor, or I could fess up and ‘accept the possible judgment.’ Odds are, even though my supervisor will be disappointed with me, I’m not going to get fired; and I may be able to ask for suggestions from my supervisor or peer on how to accomplish the task more quickly.

 

Depending on your state of mind, level of self-esteem, or personal reasoning; it may be easy to convince yourself to do just the opposite: Play it off, go smoke, throw something together and play dumb. That type of thinking will not only accomplish nothing, it will also keep you addicted. Do not let your addiction convince you to do anything besides the most logical next step…Do not smoke a cigarette yet! Instead, take the action directly in front of you.

 

You can choose to speak to your supervisor and them smoke (assuming you have time before the project is due); and having put it off just long enough to accomplish something uncomfortable is just the right amount of practice for when you no longer rely on cigarettes as a crutch.

 

What about the details on the back burner (stock piled assignments)?

 

First, it’s important to understand that a stack of papers or folders can be quite overwhelming…When broken down one at a time, it tends to lose its power. Take the time to evaluate each project assignment and sort them into 2 piles: Those you understand completely, and those you don’t. There not much so foolish as trying to complete a job whose details are foreign to you. Get clarification.

 

The next step is a matter of prioritizing each assignment. Do they have different completion deadlines or are any of them contingent upon documents you need from other departments?

 

This is where the process of smoking behavior modification begins to take a life of it’s own! In the past, if you’ve needed to take multiple trips to a department head or secretarial station, you may not have minded so much, as you took the opportunity to smoke a cigarette. Now that you won’t be smoking, however, you can begin to focus your time and energy on streamlining your own efficiency! Maybe soon, you’ll be ready to focus your efforts on working from home!

 

Imagine evaluating your work projects as a systematic factory approach. Before you start any of them, you evaluate each of them and what you will need to complete them. Your first mission is then to make a list for everything you will need from each department. You will make one trip around the building, or wait one time per set of files you need to be fetched, or whatever the case may be. You will have that many hours of focused time not wandering the building actually seated at your desk and working. Just think! You’ve come up with this idea, and you haven’t even reached your quit date yet!

 

I bet I know what you’re thinking… “There is no way I’m going to be able to sit at my desk and focus that long!” Well, you may be right. Quitting smoking, however, performs miracles on the clarity of your brain once you are no longer living in a constant cloud. Being as all the internal organs that were once suffocated by tobacco smoke and nicotine have been cleansed, your ability to focus will almost certainly sharpen once your initial troublesome cravings are gone.

 

Obviously, this is one possible example of ways to evaluate your situational smoking habits and behavior modifications steps to correct them. You can apply the questions to anything in your life. Answers to ‘What is happening?’ in a relationship may include possible jealousies or other destructive behaviors that are damaging to an intimate partnership. For now, try to be as honest with yourself as possible and ask if you’re being fair. Even if you can’t identify your feeling (that will come with emotional smoking behavior modification) at least try to analyze your behavior and examine simple ways you could modify it to not compound the stress of the situation – even if it means simply walking away and not commenting until you’ve calmed down.

 

Try, try, try to not smoke a cigarette until the feeling has passed. Teaching yourself to face your emotions gradually in preparation for your quit smoking date will help you begin to build a smoking behavior modification plan that will help you finally recover from nicotine addiction!

COMMIT TO QUIT DATE

The first thing you have to do in order to stop smoking marijuana is select a quit date. The reason a quit date is so important is because it helps you get mentally ready for the sudden change of routine. I know many people that just keep convincing themselves that they will quit as soon as schools starts or when they finish smoking their stash but it never seems to work out. Remember when you decided that you want to stop smoking weed it is absolutely a complete lifestyle change, you are learning to do everything without sparking up.

ADDICTION-UNDERSTAND IT

Since many people see marijuana smoking as no big deal, you must realize it is an addiction. Although the withdrawal affects are similar to those of cigarettes it does have a psychological impact on the those who are trying to quit. Those who have been smoking marijuana long term are used to smoking everyday, sometimes multiple times a day and will need to learn to go about their lives without getting high. Thats what holds many people back, they can not get over the need for it mentally. Our minds begin to crave the high that it has become accustom to. You must mentally prepare yourself when you decide to stop smoking marijuana.

TOSS YOUR EQUIPMENT

The next step you must take is to get rid of anything related to marijuana. If you are serious about cleaning up you life and stop smoking weed you MUST get rid of everything, whether you give it away, break it or throw it away just get it out of your environment. If you don’t have anything tempting you it is less likely to fall back into old habits. Quiting is never easy and having a pipe in your dresser will only make it harder. Keeping your bong, pipe or rolling papers will only hurt the process and you won’t succeed when you want to stop smoking marijuana.

WITHDRAWAL WILL HAPPEN

The top reason many people fail when trying to stop smoking weed is that they are not prepared for withdrawal that comes along with the process. This is why the first step of setting a quit date is so important. If you know when you are going to be going through withdrawal symptoms you are prepared for the change you will be going through. Many people suffer from anxiety and insomnia for the first month or so but once this stage of the process is over you will be 100% drug free.

These steps can help those looking to stop smoking weed give it up for good. Don’t waste any more of your time getting high. Quit today and get back on the right track to a drug free life. The decision to stop smoking weed will be the best thing that can possibly happen to you.

All the Ways To Enjoy How To Grow Weed

Smoking/inhaling: Burning or vaporizing cannabis and inhaling the smoke into the lungs is the fastest route to the blood stream. Conventional wisdom is that holding in the smoke increases the effects felt. Recent research shows the opposite; it causes more harm to the lungs without increasing the amount of THC absorbed. Studies done in Australia indicate that 95% of the THC in cannabis is absorbed in the first few seconds of inhaling. Holding in the smoke longer just allows more tar and other noxious chemicals to be absorbed. Take small, shallow puffs rather than deep inhalations.

Irritation of the throat and lungs is one of the most obvious adverse effects to the marijuana smoker as is the inevitable cough upon inhaling. The cough is the body’s reaction to the irritation of the numerous constituents of the smoke. Prolonged and repeated exposure to these irritants can lower resistance to, and aggravate infections from viruses, bacteria, or fungi. The lesser coughing, the safer the smoke. The fewer puffs the better; the more potent the cannabis used is the fewer puffs required. For these reasons, it is preferable to use only the more potent flower tops, or high grade hash for smoking use.

Despite the obvious dangers of inhaling hot smoke, there is evidence that in some cases (ie. Asthma) smoking could be a beneficial medical use of cannabis. Another advantage of smoking and learning how to grow weed is that it allows the user to control their dosage better as the effects are almost immediate, unlike when eating, or using THC in pill or spray form.

In general however, smoking is not the best way to take cannabis, especially for pain, being a less efficient use of the herb than eating. However, many medical users find they appreciate the immediate and pleasurable effects of smoking cannabis and the harm of smoking can be reduced in various ways. One alternative to inhaling smoke is to release the THC through Vaporization; inhaling vapor rather than smoke, see vaporization.

Joints: Smoking cannabis in ‘joints’ is one of the least harmful ways of smoking. A loose, fat joint is preferable to a thin one because the temperature of the smoke is lower in a thick joint. Mixing cannabis with tobacco counteracts the positive effects of THC. Some research suggests that Cannabis may actually off set some of the harmful effects of tobacco but there is also evidence that the relaxing effects of cannabis on the lungs allows the toxins in tobacco to get in deeper. There is evidence that a thin joint gives a more stimulating ‘high’, while a fat joint has a more sedative effect (due to different burn temp in ‘fat’ or ‘thin’ joints). When learning how to grow weed, avoid rolling papers with ‘strawberry’tasting chemicals and the like, ‘rainbows’ and any use of colored inks.

Pipes and Bongs: Many ingeniously designed products are on the market that claim to offer a cooler smoke but they are not all safe or efficient to use. Avoid wood, aluminium or plastic materials. Use glass, stainless steel or brass pipes and bongs.

Water pipes: Recent research suggests that water pipes are the most harmful and least efficient methods of smoking cannabis. The water absorbs a great deal of the THC in the smoke (up to 50%!), increasing the amount of tar the smoker must ingest to get the desired result. Using a water pipe with a mouthpiece less than 20cm from the water level can allow water vapor and water drops to enter the lungs.

Vaporization: Using a vaporizer which heats but does not burn the cannabis, is an alternative to smoking. The process involves releasing the THC as vapor which is inhaled rather than smoke. The effect is ‘clearer’ and it is far more economical and reduces the exposure of the throat and lungs to products of burning. Vaporization works because THC, the active ingredient of cannabis, is a resin that vaporizes at a lower combustion (burning) point than cellulose.

You can make your own vaporizer very cheaply or buy various types starting at around £35 up to £300+ for the ‘hospital standard’ ‘Volcano’. High heat destroys some of the THC in smoked cannabis (estimates vary). Vaporizers heat it more gently; the THC molecules decarboxylate and evaporate in a whitish vapor. A problem with vaporizers is with correct use. Many users and people learning how to grow weed tend to overheat and consequently burn the stuff. They are now ‘smoking’ not ‘vaporizing’ the cannabis, often without realizing – and just as many toxic tars are released as smoking in a pipe.

Vaporizers sometimes fail to satisfy long time recreational smokers who associate burning lungs with getting high. They distrust the incredibly smooth taste of the vapors, and they don’t like waiting 20 seconds to 1 minute for each hit. However they always like the fact that their supply seems to last up to four times as long because valorization wastes so little of the active ingredients lost through smoking. Some regular users of vaporizers have complained that they produce a fine dust along with the vapor. This can’t be good and they should maybe be fitted with a filter system but vaporizers are still the safest way to consume cannabis using heat.

Eating or drinking: Simply sucking a small piece of hashish or eating cannabis prepared as a cake, drink or other

food is a very effective and economical method of using cannabis. The effects take up to an hour and last 4-12 hours. Over dose is possible by eating too much (see ‘Over-Dosage’). This could result in an unpleasant ‘whirlingpit’ feeling but no lasting physical damage. If in doubt ‘self-titrate’ the dose; experiment with a little, and then a little more. More worrying are the dangers of adulteration and infection encouraged by the unregulated trade in cannabis. These include smuggling methods and profiteering practices which can make eating the resulting product totally undesirable. In general avoid eating most hash especially ‘Soap Bar’ and ‘Manali’ or ‘Squiggie’ black. Eating Hemp seeds (see ‘Hemp Seed & Nutrition’) or their oil (which have no THC content) is a very valuable source of nutrition; a quality which can have considerable medical value and contribute to general well being.

Creams and lotions: Applied on the skin to treat complaints ranging from muscle pain and/or tremors to ache. You can make these yourself. The simplest way to do this is to put leaves and buds of cannabis into a bottle filled with surgical alcohol available in any chemist. Leave in a dark place for 1-3 weeks, shaking every day or as often as possible, then use to rub on area suffering from pain.

Tinctures: The active ingredients of the plant are extracted as oil and can then be used either as drops taken orally, or the ingredient for creams and lotions to be rubbed on the skin to relieve pain and other symptoms. Cannabis Tincture was available by prescription for medical purposes in Britain until 1971.
