Terramed Alliance News USA Cancer Rates Falling

From http://www.childhood-leukemia.com/news/us-cancer-rates-falling/

Overall, cancer death rates fell 2 percent per year from 2001 to 2005 in men and 1.6 percent per year from 2002 to 2005 in women. By comparison, between 1993 and 2001, overall death rates in men declined 1.5 percent per year and, between 1994 and 2002, 0.8 percent in women.

“We continue to see a decrease in death rates from cancer in both men and women and this is mainly because of prevention – mostly a reduction in smoking rates; detection which includes screening for colorectal cancer, for breast cancer and for cervical cancer; and also improved treatment,” said report author Ahmedin Jemal, strategic director for cancer surveillance at the American Cancer Society.

“To put this in perspective, the number of lives saved is more than the population of Washington, D.C.,” said Dr. Louis M. Weiner, director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University. “In my mind, that’s a cause for some celebration. However, there are some sobering trends that we have to be aware of. The death rate for cardiovascular disease has dropped much more dramatically over that period than has the death rate from cancer, indicating the difficulty of developing new strategies to reduce the incidence of cancer and also to treat it more effectively. This is a very complex set of diseases. While we have come a long way, we have a lot further to go.”

Hopefully, continued reductions in smoking rates, especially among women, should push cancer rates further down in the future, the researchers noted.

Although some 45 million Americans continue to smoke, for a prevalence rate of about 20 percent, “smoking prevalence is going in the right direction,” Jemal said. “We’re going to see a reduction in lung cancer death rates, although I don’t know when it might be. In particular, we will see a reduction in cancer death rates among women that’s going to drive [down] the overall cancer death rate.”

Better screening could also further fuel the trend. Only 50 percent of Americans over the age of 50 currently get regular screening for colorectal cancer, he said.

Here is a summary of the report’s findings:

* In 2009, an estimated 1,479,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. (766,130 in men and 713,220 in women) and 562,340 people will die of the disease (292,540 men and 269,800 women). This means 1,500 deaths from cancer every day).

* Between 2001 and 2005, the incidence of cancer in men declined by 1.8 percent per year; from 1998 to 2005 the incidence rate in women dropped 0.6 percent per year. In men, the gains were largely as a result of decreases in the incidence of lung, prostate and colorectal cancer (the three most common cancers). In women, the decline was largely attributable to declines in both breast and colorectal cancer, the two most common tumor types in women.

* Cancer death rates dropped by 11.4 percent for women between 1991 and 2005, with a 37 percent decline in deaths from breast cancer and a 24 percent decrease in deaths from colorectal cancer.

* The three leading cancer killers in men are lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. In women, they are lung (accounting for 26 percent of all cancer deaths), breast and colorectal cancer.

* Men have a 44 percent chance of developing cancer during their lifetime and women a 37 percent chance, although women are more likely to have the disease earlier (before age 60).

* Lung cancer shows the greatest regional variation in cancer incidence, ranging from a low of 39.6 cases per 100,000 in men and 22.4 per 100,000 in women in Utah to 136.2 in men and 76.2 in women in Kentucky. These statistics correlate directly to smoking rates in the two states, with Utah having the lowest prevalence in adult smoking in the country, and Kentucky the highest.

* Blacks still assume a disproportionate share of the cancer burden, with black men being 18 percent more likely to develop cancer and 36 percent more likely to die. Black women have a 6 percent lower incidence rate but this is more than made up for with a death rate, which is 17 percent higher than that seen in white women.

* The five-year survival rate for children with cancer is now 80 percent, up from only 58 percent for those diagnosed in the mid-1970s. But cancer is still the second leading cause of death in youngsters aged 1 to 14 (after accidents), with leukemia being the most common cancer diagnosed.

* And in a special section, the report finds that cancer survivors are about 14 percent more likely to develop a new cancer than individuals who have never had a cancer diagnosis; almost 900,000 cancer survivors have been diagnosed with more than one cancer. Patients diagnosed with tobacco-related cancers, such as cancers of the oral cavity, lung, esophagus, kidney, and urinary bladder, have the highest risk for a second cancer because smoking is a risk factor for at least 15 types of cancer. Breast cancer survivors comprise almost half of women who develop a second cancer.

Unfortunately, cancer remains the leading killer (surpassing heart disease) for persons under 85, and one-quarter of deaths in the United States still come from cancer, the report stated.

“It’s good news that the death rates for the most common cancers are on the decline, but there are still too many Americans dying of cancer every year,” said Dr. Alan Astrow, director of medical oncology and hematology at Maimonides Cancer Center in New York City. “It’s troubling that African-Americans continue to experience higher rates of mortality from cancer than whites. It’s also troubling that Americans with less education have higher death rates. There are continued high rates of deaths from lung cancer. It’s hard to feel good about 160,000 Americans dying of lung cancer every year. That’s a disturbing statistics which we, as a nation, need to address.”

The report appears online and in the July/August print issue of CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy London want to position smoking as the enemy of family. This recent campaign focuses very strongly on addressing the needs of the Routine & Manual target group whose smoking prevalence is significantly higher than the national average. The key was to find an approach they could not escape from. Often living in same area that they grew up in, they enjoy spending time with their family and often this is more important than spending time with their friends. This campaign was a radical departure from the tonality of previous anti-smoking messages and each execution was subverted by a twist at the end of the ad. The idea was supported by a range of evidence but, in particular, it was the fact that children are 3 times more likely to become smokers if their parents smoke (NHS). This then allowed MCBD to draw on the irrefutable truth that kids will inherently copy their parents as they grow up.

10 Smoking Facts to Help You Develop a New Attitude Toward Your Cigarette Addiction

by danbri

10 Smoking Facts to Help You Develop a New Attitude Toward Your Cigarette Addiction

What are the smoking facts?  Smoking can kill you, and your cigarette addiction can also kill others.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking you need to start by changing your attitude and beliefs about your cigarette addiction.

All addicts engage in denial and rationalization.  You use these tidy bits of fiction to protect yourself from the stark reality of the smoking risks to your health and the health of those around you. Your tobacco addiction is likely accompanied some or all of the following bits of smoking fiction.  You cannot quit cigarette smoking unless you give up your denial and face the facts about smoking.

Fiction: I have the right to do what I want,  it is my body.

Fact #1: The facts about smoking reveal that your habit is contributing to air pollution, global warming, accidental poisoning, escalating  prevalence of asthma and even sudden infant death syndrome. Your addiction is harming not only you but those around you.  Your are not alone on this planet, and you are not alone in your life.  There are other people who love you and need you and your smoking is as harmful to them as it is to you.

Fiction: If I keep the windows open when I smoke in the car I am protecting the children from the harmful effects of smoke.

Fact #2: This does nothing to protect your children from the smoking risks to health. Every time you smoke a cigarette in the car they smoke it with you.

Fiction: Smoking is a bad habit.

Fact #3: Smoking is a tobacco addiction not a habit.

Fiction: Everybody smokes.

Fact #4: Everybody does not smoke.  So many people in Canada are giving up smoking that the national rate for smoking is approaching 18% . If you smoke you are in the minority not the majority.

Fiction: Smoking is cool.

Fact #5: When you smoke you do not look cool, you look stupid.  Let’s face it you have freely chosen to engage in an activity that drains your pocket book and harms your health. This decision calls your intelligence into question.  Smoking statistics in Canada show that smoking is more prevalent among the unemployed, lower income groups and populations with 12 years or less of grade school education.  Smoking doesn’t make you look cool it makes you look uneducated, unemployed, and poor.

Fiction: It is only tobacco. Its not like its heroin or anything.

Fact #6 : Nicotine is more dangerous that cocaine, heroin or alcohol when it comes to dependence. Dependence develops quickly.  The product is legal and easily available making the dependence easier to maintain. Tobacco addiction causes more health problems worldwide than heroin.

Fiction: It is legal so it can’t be that bad.

Fact #7: See smoking fact # 6

Fiction: I only smoke socially when I am with friends.

Fact #8: See smoking fact # 6. Your social smoking will likely result in a tobacco addiction.  If you value your friends do not harm them.  You have a moral obligation to protect them.

Fiction: I am still young and will quit before I get older

Fact # 9: See smoking fact # 6. Smoking statistics show that most people start their cigarette addiction when they are teenagers.

Fiction: It is hopeless, I have tried many times and I cannot quit cigarette smoking.

Fact # 10: Not everyone is successful the first time they try to quit cigarette smoking.  The facts about smoking show that most former smokers had several unsuccessful attempts before they finally overcame their tobacco addiction.  Keep trying!

Of all the known smoking risks to your health perhaps the most significant one is not facing the facts about smoking and living in a world of denial.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking your reality check should include facing the smoking facts.  This one is so important it bears repeating.

Smoking can kill you.

Do We Take The Heal Out Of Health?

Do We Take The Heal Out Of Health?

A study done by the University of Chicago included 578 middle-aged adults – average age 40. A team measured their blood pressure and how long they slept. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep. On average the volunteers slept 6 hours, with only 1% sleeping 8 hours or more. According to the study, missing an average of 1 hour of sleep a night over 5 years increases the risk of high blood pressure 37%. Because high blood pressure affects one-third of Americans and contributes to 7 million deaths yearly, this information shouldn’t be considered a sleeper.

A study done by “Trust for America’s Health” found more than 25% of adults are obese in 31 states. Adult obesity rates rose in 23 states and no state experienced a significant decline. At 32.5% Mississippi has the highest obesity rate; but in every state the rate of obesity is higher among 55 to 64-year-olds, causing Medicare to spend $ 1,400 to ,000 more annually on health care for obese seniors. In 1991 no state had more than a 20% obesity rate. In 2009 Colorado is the only state that doesn’t exceed that percentage. Americans need to understand fat can become “fat-al”.

A study published in the “American Journal of Preventative Medicine” said when the health risks of smoking became well-known in the 1970’s and 1980’s, the tobacco industry spent millions studying social smokers. Because social smokers don’t smoke on a daily basis, they don’t consider themselves smokers. Smoking in the U.S. has declined for a decade, but social smoking is rising. Between 1996 and 2001 social smokers went from 16% of smokers to 24%. Until social smokers admit they are smokers, campaigns to help them quit are likely to go up in smoke.

Social smokers are one reason smoking remains the leading, preventable cause of death in the U.S., causing 20% of deaths. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in 2008 the percentage of smokers was under 20% for the first time, a survey of 2,375 adults found the failing economy is making 17% of men and 31% of women smoke more. When cigarettes were hit in 2008 with the largest federal tax ever put on them, experts said the increased cost of smoking would be a major inducement for smokers to quit. Smokers seem unwilling to consider the cost to their health.

Help the Frizzies With Hair Styling Foam

Help the Frizzies With Hair Styling Foam

Oh wow – look at YOU! Did you just stick your finger in a light socket girl? Frizzies or what? What? Me? Oh I use hair styling foam and it keeps my fuzz nicely tamed down. I couldn’t stand it otherwise. Well, you know what my hair is like without help. So what happened to you today? Oh, got up late and didn’t have the time to handle it. What? You don’t have any hair styling foam? Holy smokes girl, well at lunch break, we’re going to go track some down and you can get rid of that – halo effect!

So why would you want to use something in your hair that might leave it sticky or not help you style it? Hold on a second here, if that is what you think then you have the wrong idea about hair styling foam. These days it’s incredibly light, easy to use and won’t leave behind a sticky residue. Not only that, it also packs a powerful punch when it comes to styling.

Why is using hair styling foam a good idea when combating the frizzies? It’s a good idea simply because it adds badly needed moisture to your hair. But it also does more than that. It has special ingredients in it that help your hair retain what moisture it already has. That’s a bonus! And one other thing you will be interested in – it controls static. And here you thought the only thing that gave you static was your nylons while you were walking across a carpet. Nope, this static is the kind that makes your hair stick out like a Medusa’s head. Hair styling foams with static control mean you can use them in cold dry climates, and indoors of course.

If you happen to love the sun and spend a lot of time outside under its rays, check the label of the next can of hair styling foam you buy. Make sure it has sunscreen in it. Not all of them do, and this little added bonus will make your hair pretty happy, plus reduce the amount of sun damage to your tresses. Besides, being out in the sun sucks moisture from your hair and that makes your frizzies even worse.

If you happen to get a hair styling foam that comes in an aerosol container, use only about a quarter sized dab from the can. One quick push of the button should dispense all you need. If you use too much, you will be wasting the product, go through it more quickly and pay more in the long run. So be wise with your hair styling foam and just use what you need.

Lets Go Beat Up Some Smokers

Lets Go Beat Up Some Smokers

The war on smoking has been going on for over 40 years now and it is not going well despite the preponderance of the evidence is that cigarette smoking damages one’s health over the long run. Yes millions of people have quit smoking and yet millions more have also started during the same time period.

The American public has been so inundated with anti-smoking information that it is no longer effective and commercials are becoming more and more outrageous. According to one of the latest commercials on Spike TV the tobacco industry supplied its products to have it featured in a Muppet movie. I thought I have seen every Muppet movie ever made and for the life of me I do not remember any Muppet movie that featured a cigarette. I must have missed that one.

The same production company produces another commercial that shows a knucklehead trying to purchase light bullets for his gun and one if his statements is something like “cigarette companies are labeling there cigarette with light and ultralights even though they are just as deadly as regular cigarette?”. Lets see now, if I apply the same logic to air quality then if I lived in Linfen, China (dirtiest air in the world) or if I lived in Cape Grim, Tasmania (cleanest air in the world) I would still just as likely to develop respiratory problems because both have places have at least some air pollutions. Give me a break.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do not condone smoking. If you want to smoke great. If you do not want to smoke great. But if you try to force me to do either one we will then have a big problem. So why is it that this commercial producer can get away with blatantly false statements? It is because it is socially unacceptable to be a smoker. Smokers are in the minority and it is ok to beat up smokers today.

Do you know of anyone who would publicly admit to being pro smoking? Even smokers will tell you that they know it is bad for you and they are trying to quit or have tried to quit in the past but they will not admit to being pro smoking. If a tobacco company filed a law suite against that producer can you immanage the publicity that would be generated against the tobacco company? Its just not worth the effort.

I do not have a problem with the anti smoking campaign but I do have a problem with the way society is allowing certain business and government practices to occur. Business have won law suites allowing them to not hire employees that smoke and to fire existing employees that do smoke. The bases if the law suite is that the health insurance cost would rise if they employee smokers. I have worked for a lot of companies over the last 40+ years and never once have I seen an insurance representative come into my company and taken a pole of how many smokers and nonsmokers were employed and then adjusted the companies insurance rate based on the results. The next time you update your resume, you may want to include references willing to vouch that you never touch tobacco.

I believe that all of the jurors on the employment issues of smokers were non smokers. Smokers were relieved from jury duty because they may be prejudice. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2004 44.5 million U.S. adults were smokers comprising 20.9 percent of the adult population so 2 of them should have been smokers. Sounds like stacking the deck to me.

I think that I should be allowed to fire all of my employees that are over 40 years of age. After all older employees will use more health care benefits than younger employees so this policy should keep my insurance rates to a minimum. While I’m at it anyone with a higher than 12 percent body fat is gone. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 1989 that Obese people cost 51.5 billion in health care costs per year.

Here is an interesting fact. The Department of Public Health, Netherlands reported in 1997 that smokers have more diseases that nonsmokers but nonsmokers live linger and can incur more health costs at advanced ages. For a given age smokers can cost 40 percent more in health care cost than nonsmokers and if all smokers quit today health care costs would be lower at first but after 15 years they would be higher than at present. That does it I’m going to fire everyone over 40.

Why does society allow this type of injustice happen? Because you as an individual do nothing. To paraphrase a popular saying; for injustice to occur all that is needed is for good people to do nothing. If it is ok with you that smokers are being punished for there actions then do not complain when it is your turn.

Babies: Smoking Significantly Increases Baby’s Sids Risk and Makes for a Restless Night

Babies: Smoking Significantly Increases Baby’s Sids Risk and Makes for a Restless Night

Experts found babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy were born with smaller airways – making them more vulnerable to breathing problems after birth.  These breathing problems can put your baby at increased risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Smoking has been linked to various health problems in babies, including prematurity and low birth weight. Mothers who smoke are at increased risk of having a stillbirth, miscarriage or premature infant. Smoking while pregnant will lower the amount of oxygen available to you and your growing baby and increase your baby’s heart rate. These health factors also contribute to raising the SIDS risk for your infant, and in your child’s decreased ability to breathe correctly or take in enough oxygen for a restful, restorative sleep at night.

Babies born to mothers who smoke are significantly lighter and shorter than those born to non smokers. Children who are exposed to tobacco smoke before birth or in the home are far more likely to suffer from respiratory illnesses and infections, which can also contribute to a decrease in quality of nighttime sleep for your baby.

The more cigarettes you or your baby’s caregiver smoke per day, the greater your baby’s chances of developing these and other health problems.  Studies show that a baby’s risk of SIDS rises with each additional smoker in the household, with the number of cigarettes smoked a day, and with the length of exposure to cigarette smoke.

So give your baby and yourself the best chance at a restful night’s sleep and keep your home and your baby’s sleeping environment smoke-free.  Your baby will thank you and you’ll sleep better knowing your baby’s risk for SIDS is greatly diminished and that your baby is breathing clean air with each breath he takes at night.

Is The Electric Cigarette Harmful or Not?

Is The Electric Cigarette Harmful or Not?

<object width=”480″ height=”385″>

Every since the debute of the brand new electronic cigarette, smokers currently have wondered if it is healthy or not.Present smokers in our 21st century combined with tobacco industry have longed searched for an additional alternative to smoking cigarettes. At this time people who smoke understand that there’s absolutely no smoking safeguard whenever lighting up a each and every type of conventional cigarettes. There seem to be several quest for people to quit smoking at every single degree. So are electronic cigarettes a different unsuccessful safe substitute for lighting up? When it comes to those who are not aware of or maybe new to using tobacco, using typical tobacco products now have proved to become the key trigger for generating cancer of the lung, strokes, along with other vascular disorders. At some point, lots of people weren’t conscious of the dangers of tobacco use and also tobacco companies spent an incredible number of dollars continuing to keep individuals uneducated regarding the dangers of cigarette smoking but ultimately their efforts failed.

Some companies marketed different kinds of cigarettes including light, lower tar, and filtered cigarettes while using the insinuation that these cigarettes were much more healthier than the regular type and in fact none of those cigarettes turned out to become less healthier or had any significant smaller health risk. The marketing continued as well as the medical hazard of standard, mild or any other tar residue based cigarettes stays a serious health threat.Another substitute advertised just as much less of a health risk is Asian organic cigarettes – advertised mainly within Asia where smoking is on an upswing. Nonetheless, there is a lot of evidence that is missing regarding lowered risk in comparison to tobacco.

The sad point is the fact that people who smoke may be simply extending the outcome of smoking tar based products which explains the terrible health outcomes. All of those products boost worries that they’ll keep people using tobacco beneath the false anticipation that they’re at less danger of unfavorable health outcomes. The perfect final result for public safety would be to lower the number of individuals that use cigarettes at all.The most recent participant in this particular game involving “risk-free smoking” may be the e-cigarette. This can be described as battery powered cigarette-shaped tube that delivers a nicotine vapor whenever inhaled. The reason that the e cig is healthier in comparison to tar dependent cigarettes is because it provides off a nicotine vapor which has no cancer causing agents like tobacco smoke.Electric powered cigarettes does not have any unwanted proof associated with any kind of threat revealed throughout the professional medical community. Actually, there has not been enough existing analysis performed to disprove its safety.

Many states are requiring that more analysis be carried out to make certain the health and safety of smoking these smokless cigarettes. The good part is that this particular kind of nicotine delivery system does not possess the over four thousand identified carcinogens associated with smoking standard tar based cigarettes. There are actually information that the nicotine watery vapor may have a few cancer causing agents in a very really tiny volume. Nevertheless, this has not been recently confirmed throughout the health care community at this point.Because there isn’t a lot research carried out about the safety of electronic cigarettes several nations around the world have taken different techniques in regards towards the dilemma. Some people really feel that e-cigarettes are most likely risk-free than smoking cigarettes tobacco, and consequently should not be disheartened as an option smoking choice. Other people simply choose to warn the general public the fact that facts are not in, therefore buyers of e cigs should exercise caution. The community outcry is for non smokers to obtain the the very least exposure towards the carcinogens in normal cigarettes and eliminate as many smokers as possible. Nevertheless, the electronic cigarette will certainly let people to carry on to smoke with safety and security that there is no carcinogens found..

Scientific proof is lacking at this stage as towards the safety of the electronic cigarette. However, at the very least this method can assist the carbon monoxide smoke that non smokers have been faced with more than the tar based smokers. So far, this alternative process of smoking may just be the greatest and healthiest method apart from quitting altogether. What do you think?

For a complete Electronic Cigarette Review, make sure you get all of the facts before you purchase.
