Today, we are going to discuss some of the risk factors of cervical cancer. They are many that it will not be possible for us to exhaust all of them, but let us see how far we can go today.

1) HUMAN PAPILLUM VIRUS INFECTION (HPV): This is the most important of all the risk factors associated to the cancer of the cervix. Doctors believe that before a woman can develop cervical cancer, she must have been infected by HPV. Some types of this HPV are classified as “high risk” because they are the main causes of cervical cancer. These types include HPV 6, HPV 18, HPV 31, HPV 35, and HPV 45 and many other. About two-thirds of all cervical cancers are caused by HPV 16-18.

2) SMOKING: Women who smoke are more likely to get cervical cancer than women who don’t smoke. Smoking exposes the body to many cancer-causing chemicals that affects not only the lungs, but other parts of the body. The lungs will first of all, absorb these harmful substances, and later transfer it into the blood stream throughout the body. The by-products of tobacco have been found in the cervical mucus of women who smoke. These substances damage the DNA of the cervix cells and may equally lead to the development of cervical cancer.

3) IMMUNOSUPPRESSION: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus damages the immune system of the body completely and makes women to be more at risk for HPV infection. This is one of the causes of increased risk of cervical cancer in women with AIDS. The immune system is very important in destroying cancer cells, and slowing down their growth and spread. A cervical pre-cancer is likely to develop into an invasive cancer faster in women with HIV.

4) CHLAMYDIA INFECTION: This is a very common bacterium that can infect the reproductive system. The spread is mainly through sexual contact. Women whose blood tests show past or present Chlamydia infection are at a higher risk of cervical cancer, as against women with normal test results. This type of infection often shows no symptoms in women. Unless a woman goes for the examination of her pelvic region, she may not know that she is infected of Chlamydia. When this stays long in the body, it leads to pelvic inflammation, which also leads to infertility.

5) DIETS: Diets low in fruits and vegetables can increase the risk of cervical cancer. Also, overweight can equally lead to cervical cancer.

6) BIRTH CONTROL PILLS: The usage of birth control pills for a long time increases the risk of cervical cancer in women. The longer these pills are used, the risk goes up, and goes down after it is stopped.

7) MULTIPLE PREGNANCIES: Women with many full time pregnancies have an increased risk of the cancer of the cervix. This may be because some of these women may have been exposed to unprotected sexual acts which have therefore exposed them to HPV infection. This is because the immune system of the pregnant woman is weak, which allows for HPV infection/ cancer growth.

LOW SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS: Many women with low income don’t have access to adequate health care services, including pap tests, and the implication of this is that they will not be screened or treated for pre-cancerous cervical diseases.

9) FAMILY HISTORY: Cervical cancer runs in some families. If your mother or sister has cervical cancer, your risk of developing this disease is higher. Women from the same family as a patient already diagnosed of cervical cancer may be more likely to have one or more of the other non-genetic risk factors previously described in this section.

I will love to hear what are your own views or opinions on this post.

How STDs are Linked to Cervical Cancer

In the US, a survey found out that 40% of the populaiton of women knew one thing or another about HPV or human papilloma virus. The remaining percent know nothing of it which makes this an alarming situation. Most people are familiar with the term “cancer”. But it is still not known how viruses transmitted by sexual contact are responsible for cancer. Women should be aware and take caution because they are at a higher risk of developing it.

Cervical Cancer:

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer found in the cervix of women. This cancer can be particularly dangerous, as it generally shows no symptoms in the early onset stages. Due to this factor it is extremely important for women to get yearly pap smears. Most cervical cancer is detected through pap smears. As with any cancer, the earlier the cancer is detected, the better the prognosis for treatment.

Cancer Treatment Center

If there’s one disease that’s been challenging the practice of medicine for a length of time now, it will definitely be cancer. In an overview, cancer happens when malign cells get to form in an area which affects that way it functions. Though it may seem similar to a petty disease, the effects that come with cancer are drastic. The fact that it can show up in any organ of the body and alter its function makes it more serious to cure.

Even though the addiction of cigarettes has a certain chemical basis, this basis is not likely to be particularly strong, unless you smoke a pack a day or more. When people feel uncomfortable or annoyed at the times when they cannot light up a cigarette, such as on an airplane or when in attendance of a certain social occasion, it is mostly psychological. So how to you overcome this psychological dependence and stop smoking?

Chemical Dependency

It is always recommended to seek advice from a physician regarding nicotine replacement therapy if you are a person that smokes one packet or more on a daily basis. Recent research that has been undertaken states that nicotine replacement may not in actual fact lead to higher success rates in remaining a non-smoker for a year or two. However it may prove to be a crucial factor in passing the first few days after quitting smoking with ease.

The extent and intensity of withdrawal symptoms can be significantly reduced with nicotine replacement. As well as this, it can compensate as much as 50% for the reduction in metabolic rate and any other physiological changes that can result in gaining weight when you quit smoking.

Mental Boredom

Boredom plays a big part when it comes to smoking. Even though boredom may not be the primary reason for smoking, lighting and holding a cigarette can become a habit in certain situations for many people. A cigarette is automatically reached for by many people when arriving at a party, having a drink in a bar, when making a telephone call, or when it is necessary for them to wait for something or someone without anything else to occupy themselves with.

Smoking is chosen by many people to simply pass the time when they think that there is nothing else to do. If you fit into this description, then it is imperative that you find different ways to replace the automatic act of smoking.

Adopting a particular behavior rather than smoking can make people feel positive about themselves. This is because they are being successful in resisting a cigarette. Rather than smoking a cigarette, many people choose to sip water, or use a toothpick or cocktail straw in order to do something with their hands and mouth. Certain people choose to complete the daily crossword puzzle in the newspaper, knit, or even pain in order to prove that they have the determination not to smoke.

If a large issue for you personally is boredom, then taking up a hobby will help you to quit smoking. Of course, it would be advised to ensure that you select a hobby that smoking does not go well with. Perhaps playing a computer game, writing, painting, or knitting would be a relaxing and interesting way to pass the time and prevent you from wanting a cigarette.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Cost – How to Quit Smoking When You Relapse

There is a statistic bantered around the smoking cessation community that states people who quit smoking will try on average 7 attempts before they are successful and finally quit for good. I’m not sure if there is any data to back up this claim, but it does “sound” about right. We all know people who have tried to quit time and time again without success. Often times these people fail to change their behavior that is commonly associated with their smoking habits.

When you breathe in (inhale), small, bristly hairs near the openings of your nostrils filter out dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Bits that slip through become attached to the mucus membrane, which has tiny, hair-like structures called cilia on its surface. But sometimes germs get through the cilia and other defense systems in the respiratory tract and can cause illness.

Bronchitis can be acute or chronic. An acute medical condition comes on quickly and can cause severe symptoms, but it lasts only a short time (no longer than a few weeks). Acute bronchitis is most often caused by one of a number of viruses that can infect the respiratory tract and attack the bronchial tubes. Infection by certain bacteria can also cause acute bronchitis. Most people have acute bronchitis at some point in their lives.

Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, can be mild to severe and is longer lasting — from several months to years. With chronic bronchitis, the bronchial tubes continue to be inflamed (red and swollen), irritated, and produce excessive mucus over time. The most common cause of chronic bronchitis is smoking.

Bronchitis (pronounced: brahn-kite-uss) is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, the airways that connect the trachea (windpipe) to the lungs. This delicate, mucus-producing lining covers and protects the respiratory system, the organs and tissues involved in breathing. When a person has bronchitis, it may be harder for air to pass in and out of the lungs than it normally would, the tissues become irritated and more mucus is produced. The most common symptom of bronchitis is a cough.

People who have chronic bronchitis are more susceptible to bacterial infections of the airway and lungs, like pneumonia. (In some people with chronic bronchitis, the airway becomes permanently infected with bacteria.) Pneumonia is more common among smokers and people who are exposed to secondhand smoke.

Signs and Symptoms

Acute bronchitis often starts with a dry, annoying cough that is triggered by the inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. Other symptoms may include:

cough that may bring up thick white, yellow, or greenish mucus
headache
generally feeling ill
chills
fever (usually mild)
shortness of breath
soreness or a feeling of tightness in the chest
wheezing (a whistling or hissing sound with breathing)

Chronic bronchitis is most common in smokers, although people who have repeated episodes of acute bronchitis sometimes develop the chronic condition. Except for chills and fever, a person with chronic bronchitis has a chronic productive cough and most of the symptoms of acute bronchitis, such as shortness of breath and chest tightness, on most days of the month, for months or years.

A person with chronic bronchitis often takes longer than usual to recover from colds and other common respiratory illnesses. Wheezing, shortness of breath, and cough may become a part of daily life. Breathing can become increasingly difficult.

In people with asthma, bouts of bronchitis may come on suddenly and trigger episodes in which they have chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, and difficulty exhaling (breathing out). In a severe episode of asthmatic bronchitis, the airways can become so narrowed and clogged that breathing is very difficult.

Causes of Bronchitis-

Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses, and it may occur together with or following a cold or other respiratory infection. Germs such as viruses can be spread from person to person by coughing. They can also be spread if you touch your mouth, nose, or eyes after coming into contact with respiratory fluids from an infected person.

Smoking (even for a brief time) and being around tobacco smoke, chemical fumes, and other air pollutants for long periods of time puts a person at risk for developing chronic bronchitis.

What Do Doctors Do?

If a doctor thinks you may have bronchitis, he or she will examine you and listen to your chest with a stethoscope for signs of wheezing and congestion.

In addition to this physical examination, the doctor will ask you about any concerns and symptoms you have, your past health, your family’s health, any medications you’re taking, any allergies you may have, and other issues (including whether you smoke). This is called the medical history. Your doctor may order a chest X-ray to rule out a condition like pneumonia, and may sometimes order a breathing test (called spirometry) to rule out asthma.

Because acute bronchitis is most often caused by a virus, the doctor may not prescribe an antibiotic (antibiotics only work against bacteria, not viruses).

The doctor will recommend that you drink lots of fluids, get plenty of rest, and may suggest using an over-the-counter or prescription cough medicine to relieve your symptoms as you recover.

In some cases, the doctor may prescribe a bronchodilator (pronounced: bron-ko-dy-lay-ter) or other medication typically used to treat asthma. These medications are often given through inhalers or nebulizer machines and help to relax and open the bronchial tubes and clear mucus so it’s easier to breathe.

If you have chronic bronchitis, the goal is to reduce your exposure to whatever is irritating your bronchial tubes. For people who smoke, that means quitting!

If you have bronchitis and don’t smoke, try to avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.

Smoking causes lung damage in many ways. For example, it can cause temporary paralysis of the cilia and over time kills the ciliate airway lining ciliated cells completely. Eventually, the airway lining stops clearing smoking-related debris, irritants, and excess mucus from the lungs altogether. When this happens, a smoker’s lungs become even more vulnerable to infection. Over time, harmful substances in tobacco smoke permanently damage the airways, increasing the risk for emphysema, cancer, and other serious lung diseases. Smoking also causes the mucus-producing glands to enlarge and make more mucus. Along with the toxic particles and chemicals in smoke, this causes a smoker to have a chronic cough.

Prevention

What’s the best way to avoid getting bronchitis? Washing your hands often helps to prevent the spread of many of the germs that cause the condition — especially during cold and flu season.

If you don’t smoke, don’t ever start smoking — and if you do smoke, try to quit or cut down. Try to avoid being around smokers because even secondhand smoke can make you more susceptible to viral infections and increase congestion in your airway. Also, be sure to get plenty of rest and eat right so that your body can fight off any illnesses that you come in contact with.

International Statistics on Scabies

We all know that scabies is one of the commonly occurring skin conditions across the world. There have been numerous accounts which suggest that the scabies epidemics usually occur in 30 year cycles. For the most part, these accounts coincided with the wars in the 20th century. Since scabies does not happen to be a reportable disease, all data is based on variable notification and hence it is difficult to ascertain the incidence of scabies.

Classic Scabies Vs Norwegian Scabies

When it comes to the classic scabies infestation, anywhere from 5 to 15 mites are burrowed beneath the surface of skin. In addition, very little evidence of the infestation could be seen during the initial weeks. However after 4 weeks, an individual experiences subsequent infestations, along with delayed type-4 hypersensitivity and the body produces allergic reactions to the mites, their eggs as well as their faeces.

Signs and Symptoms of Diabetic Nephropathy An overview

The GFR remains elevated or has returned to normal, but glomerular damage has progressed to significant microalbuminuria (small but above-normal level of the protein albumin in the urine). Patients in stage 2 excrete more than 30 mg of albumin in the urine over a 24-hour period. Significant microalbuminuria will progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Therefore, all diabetes patients should be screened for microalbuminuria on a routine (yearly) basis.

Unani approach in the management of chronic kidney disease

The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs that lie on either side of the spine in the lower middle of the back. Each kidney weighs about ¼ pound and contains approximately one million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron is made of a glomerulus and a tubule. The glomerulus is a miniature filtering or sieving device while the tubule is a tiny tube like structure attached to the glomerulus. The kidneys are connected to the urinary bladder by tubes called ureters.

Smoking in the presence of hypertension (high blood pressure) can heighten the risk of more damage to your heart, particularly the blood vessels that feed the heart.

The big factor in hypertension is the narrowing of the blood vessels. With each puff from a cigarette, the blood vessels constrict even more, which will have a direct impact on high blood pressure, causing it to increase.

Risk factors for hypertension:

Family history, gender, age, race, high body fat, stress and smoking.

Smoking can help plaque to deposit and stick to the surface of the arteries, which results in a more narrow passage way for blood to travel through, resulting in the heart having to work harder.

This puts added strain on the heart muscle and vessels, which can lead to inflammation. Additionally, the heart can become enlarged, which will affect the pumping action and the heart’s ability to circulate blood to the rest of the body.

How smoking affects you:

There are thousands of toxins in cigarettes which enter your body every time you smoke. This reduces the amount of oxygen present in your system.

Nicotine promotes the production of adrenalin in the adrenal gland, which restricts the blood vessels and increases blood pressure.

Chemical properties of cigarettes:

Benzene (petrol additive)

This hydrocarbon comes from petrol and coal and is used as a solvent. It has been associated with leukemia and is known as a carcinogen.

Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)

A colorless liquid, highly poisonous, used to preserve dead bodies – also found in cigarette smoke. Known to cause cancer, respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.

Ammonia (toilet cleaner)

Used as a flavoring, frees nicotine from tobacco turning it into a gas, found in dry cleaning fluids.

Acetone (nail polish remover)

Fragrant volatile liquid ketone, used as a solvent, for example, nail polish remover – found in cigarette smoke.

Tar Particulate

Matter drawn into lungs when you inhale on a lighted cigarette. Once inhaled, smoke condenses and about 70 per cent of the tar in the smoke is deposited in the smoker’s lungs.

Nicotine (insecticide/addictive drug)

An extremely addictive substance.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) (car exhaust fumes)

An odorless, tasteless, and poisonous gas, rapidly fatal in large amounts

Arsenic (rat poison),

Hydrogen Cyanide (gas chamber poison)

Your risk of heart attack is greater if you suffer from hypertension, and your blood pressure increases when you smoke. This makes the two of these together a deadly combination.

It is a good idea to consult with a doctor who can prescribe you with the appropriate course of action.

Females are more vulnerable to smoking side effects than males. Smoking females are likely to start smoking at the age of 13 or 14. Females experiment with smoking more than males at this age. Between the ages of 15 to 17, the numbers of female smokers are greater than the number of male smokers of same age. At the age of 18 to 19, the numbers of male smokers surpass the numbers of female smokers.

Effect of Smoking on Females

Females have more effects due to smoking than males. Females can suffer from childlessness due to smoking. A recent study demonstrated that female smokers have double chances of childlessness than non-smoking females. Smoking decreases the number of oocytes (eggs) in female reproductive internal organ. An experiment was done on animals, which showed that nicotine was the main cause of decrease in oocytes.

Smoking women witness abnormal functioning of fallopian tubes, which carry eggs from ovary to the uterus. Smoking disturbs the physiological levels of reproductive hormones, increases the pelvic inflammatory disease and reduces embryo implantation. Babies born to smoking females develop ectopia problems. The rate of respiratory diseases increases in babies of females, who smoke. Sudden death of babies after the delivery is mostly a scenario with the smoking females.

Heart disease is the most common cause of death among females. Smoking is the main cause of the heart diseases. Heart diseases take more lives of females every year than all other types of cancer combined. Smoking increases the blood pressure, which causes strokes. Every year in the United States, about 160,000 deaths are due to strokes and out of them 100,000 were females. Strokes not only lead to death, but may also make the person permanently disabled. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is another disorder seen in smoking females.

Studies indicate that women are more susceptible to the harmful effects of smoking than males. This studies report that respiratory disorders, deteriorating health, reproductive disorders and lung diseases are more in smoking females, than smoking males. The female teenager of a smoking parent has a higher chance to develop asthma, bronchial diseases at the early age of 18. Globally, cigarette smoking is the main cause of respiratory diseases, reduced lung function and lower grade of Self-Rated Health (SRH). Female smokers have larger reduction in expiratory lung function, than male smokers.

Another disease caused by smoking is diabetes. Around 18 million people suffer from diabetes of which 37,000 deaths a year were female. Many females develop diabetes due to excessive smoking habits. The last stage of diabetes shows symptoms such as blindness, nerve damage and kidney failure. To avoid diabetes, smoking females should avoid smoking, conduct regular tests of sugar levels and by maintaining a controlled and healthy diet.

A recent medical study reported that smoking is the main cause of acne in humans, especially females. Smoking causes a particular type of acne known as Non-Inflammatory Acne (NIA). Large blackheads and blocked pores are the characteristics of NIA.

Researchers studied 100 females of ages 25 to 40 and reported that 46% of smokers had acne. Teen smokers have a greater chance of skin disorders. Smoking females also suffer from premature aging of skin, leathery complexion and wrinkles. On the whole, smoking has more harmful effects on women than men.

The Connection Between Panic and Anxiety and “Self Medicating”

A lot of people suffering from panic and anxiety disorders tend to “self-medicate”. That is, they tend to use alcohol or drugs, both over the counter and illegal, to dull the symptoms of their anxiety. According to the ScienceDirect web site, a study found that as many as 10-40 percent of alcoholics have panic attacks and/or anxiety, and 10-20 percent of people with panic and anxiety abuse drugs or alcohol. The majority of people asked believed that that their self medication worked, even though the researchers found that these people often had more serious situations, including depression.

The study also found that a majority of people reported having anxiety before alcohol or substance abuse.

The relationship between panic and anxiety disorders and alcohol and drugs seems to be a vicious one; people with anxiety and panic use alcohol to self medicate sometimes leading to alcohol and substance abuse, while on the other hand, alcohol and drug use can lead to panic and anxiety disorders.

For years it marijuana was commonly considered not to have any negative long term effects on users, but this has changed. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, not only can you experience anxiety and panic attacks immediately after using cannabis; one of the most common long term side effects of smoking marijuana is panic and anxiety.

Other drugs that can cause anxiety are stimulants such as amphetamines, cocaine or crack. Hallucinogens such as LSD, PCP and ecstasy

In addition to these illegal substances, as previously mentioned, legal substances such as nicotine, alcohol and caffeine can cause panic and anxiety reactions, especially in high doses.

Even prescription and over the counter medication can cause both immediate anxiety reactions and long term anxiety disorders.

Most diet pills contains some sort of stimulant, ranging from caffeine and guarana to ephedrine ( also sometimes called ephedra) and other stimulants closely related to amphetamine. Some of these stimulants are considered harmless in small doses, but are usually found in relatively high doses in diet pills. According to The National Institutes of Health, studies in animals show that the use of diet pills containing fenfluramine, can cause not only panic and anxiety, but also long term brain damage.

If you experience panic and anxiety, it is important to be very aware of what you put in your body. It may be easy to think that a little caffeine or alcohol is normal and maybe even good for you, but if you have anxiety problems, you should probably cut down on the use of these substances or cut them out all together. If you experience negative feeling or anxiety thinking about giving up on these substances, it is quite possible that you are addicted to them, something that makes it even more important for you to give it up.

It might be difficult for you to change some of the habits that are causing your anxiety, and in some cases it may temporarily cause more anxiety to give something up, but if you are suffering from panic and anxiety, you can greatly improve the quality of your life if you limit the amounts of anxiety causing substances you have in your system.

This is a story of a man who quit smoking and now enjoys the pleasure of life more than before. He left smoking due to her 5 year old adorable daughter, who became a passive victim of her smoking.

As soon as he enters his home he started to fire a cigarette without having the idea that little lungs cannot tolerate the carbon monoxide particles contained in the cigarette. Every time he smoked the little lady started to cough and got ill having problem with breathing.

He and her wife took it as a condition due to change in weather or allergy from dust.

They kept ignoring her condition when one day he was at home enjoying his weekend off from work. Her princess started to cough and then she was breathing hard.

They took her to hospital where the doctor declared it as asthma resulting from the weak nose filters have become so weak that they cannot intake the 4000 chemicals contained in a cigarette.

The doctor revealed this secret by smelling the father’s shirt even from a distance and can tell that he is a smoker.

It took him by a shock that it was due to his severe addiction that her daughter is suffering from these attacks.

The doctor briefed them about what happen when a non smoker especially a child is exposed to a harsh smoke of cigarette. He told them that a patient experiences stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing, and nausea and in the later stages some sort of cancer like lungs or esophagus cancer.

When a person smokes in front of someone who is physically incapable of fighting the harsh chemicals of this smoke he or she develops an irritation in the airways, which gets puffy, started to shrink and get filled with mucus.

The doctor also narrated that a second hand smoker is prone to asthma trigger and what happens during that condition is what is evident in their daughter’s condition like. The doctor said that if you hang out with your family and friends, others are more likely to have asthma symptoms.

And whatever happened to their daughter during the last few weeks it was due to the killing smoke of cigarette. After the time of two hours the physical health of their daughter started to recover and she was much better after when they returned home.

Throughout driving the way home he realized that it was his fault that her daughter is suffering from the problem of breathing. He also noticed that it was due to his change in job that he comes home earlier and smokes in his home which was not used to be the case.

So he committed himself to leave smoking and live a positive life starting with another job for the health and survival of his family. Also his family supported him in leaving this addiction and now after two years he is a changed man much positive about life enjoying his better quality time with his family.

And he narrates leaving smoking actually made him living a true life with his family, that now he is alive.

What are the smoking facts?  Smoking can kill you, and your cigarette addiction can also kill others.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking you need to start by changing your attitude and beliefs about your cigarette addiction.

All addicts engage in denial and rationalization.  You use these tidy bits of fiction to protect yourself from the stark reality of the smoking risks to your health and the health of those around you. Your tobacco addiction is likely accompanied some or all of the following bits of smoking fiction.  You cannot quit cigarette smoking unless you give up your denial and face the facts about smoking.

Fiction: I have the right to do what I want,  it is my body.

Fact #1: The facts about smoking reveal that your habit is contributing to air pollution, global warming, accidental poisoning, escalating  prevalence of asthma and even sudden infant death syndrome. Your addiction is harming not only you but those around you.  Your are not alone on this planet, and you are not alone in your life.  There are other people who love you and need you and your smoking is as harmful to them as it is to you.

Fiction: If I keep the windows open when I smoke in the car I am protecting the children from the harmful effects of smoke.

Fact #2: This does nothing to protect your children from the smoking risks to health. Every time you smoke a cigarette in the car they smoke it with you.

Fiction: Smoking is a bad habit.

Fact #3: Smoking is a tobacco addiction not a habit.

Fiction: Everybody smokes.

Fact #4: Everybody does not smoke.  So many people in Canada are giving up smoking that the national rate for smoking is approaching 18% . If you smoke you are in the minority not the majority.

Fiction: Smoking is cool.

Fact #5: When you smoke you do not look cool, you look stupid.  Let’s face it you have freely chosen to engage in an activity that drains your pocket book and harms your health. This decision calls your intelligence into question.  Smoking statistics in Canada show that smoking is more prevalent among the unemployed, lower income groups and populations with 12 years or less of grade school education.  Smoking doesn’t make you look cool it makes you look uneducated, unemployed, and poor.

Fiction: It is only tobacco. Its not like its heroin or anything.

Fact #6 : Nicotine is more dangerous that cocaine, heroin or alcohol when it comes to dependence. Dependence develops quickly.  The product is legal and easily available making the dependence easier to maintain. Tobacco addiction causes more health problems worldwide than heroin.

Fiction: It is legal so it can’t be that bad.

Fact #7: See smoking fact # 6

Fiction: I only smoke socially when I am with friends.

Fact #8: See smoking fact # 6. Your social smoking will likely result in a tobacco addiction.  If you value your friends do not harm them.  You have a moral obligation to protect them.

Fiction: I am still young and will quit before I get older

Fact # 9: See smoking fact # 6. Smoking statistics show that most people start their cigarette addiction when they are teenagers.

Fiction: It is hopeless, I have tried many times and I cannot quit cigarette smoking.

Fact # 10: Not everyone is successful the first time they try to quit cigarette smoking.  The facts about smoking show that most former smokers had several unsuccessful attempts before they finally overcame their tobacco addiction.  Keep trying!

Of all the known smoking risks to your health perhaps the most significant one is not facing the facts about smoking and living in a world of denial.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking your reality check should include facing the smoking facts.  This one is so important it bears repeating.

Smoking can kill you.

Described as a filthy habit by many, smoking has long been considered a threat by most if not all non-smokers. Health-wise, the discrimination is quite reasonable, if only because the health risks to non-smokers are even greater than on those who are. Despite the fact that smoking might have benefits as a form of self-medication for depression, the “high” it produces is temporary.  Needless to say, the risks associated with smoking far outweighs its very few benefits, if that word can be used at all in the context of smoking.  Most people would rather not be exposed to the cigarettes and the smoke emitted from it. This is especially true in public places, if the number of territories and countries where smoking is banned in public places is any indication. However, aside from public convenience and the supposed “discrimination” against smokers, there are health benefits for non-smokers because of the smoking ban.

Recent studies show that better respiratory health has been achieved or at least is perceived to be now more attainable among non-smokers.  The reason behind this positive health perception is the passage  of legislation to ban smoking in public. A recent study found that non-smokers who were not exposed to second-hand smoke were showing better signs of respiratory and circulatory health than they were prior to the ban being put into place. Interestingly, most countries that have public smoking bans in place did not foresee this happening and had originally placed legislation against the habit to help cut down the number of people engaged in it. No one is complaining about this unexpected development, of course, being that it is a welcome thing for the non-smoking population.

The data contradicts the expectations of the people who institute such bans. Most people who issue legislations to ban the public consumption of tobacco and cigarettes believe it would cut down on the number of people who did so. Recent research seems to indicate that this is not the case, with the rate of people people quitting the habit remaining steady before and after the bans. This suggests that banning them from smoking in public is not helping them quit and may simply be forcing them to do so in other, less accessible areas. However, since these areas are out of the public arena, non-smokers are reaping the benefits of cleaner, smoke-free air in areas where a ban is in effect.
The study also took into consideration the number of people being hospitalized for smoke-related ailments. Two areas were investigated, with one having a clear and long-standing public smoking ban, and another that had no such legislation passed. The study specifically chose two hospitals, one in each area, that admitted patients for those smoke-related ailments. The study found that less people went to the hospital for heart and respiratory conditions related to smoking were much lower in the area where the ban was in place, whereas it remained steady in the area without a ban.

The research team noted that even just a little exposure was capable of doing much damage to the cardiovascular system with evidence being provided by the study itself. The smoke causes blood vessels to constrict and reduces the amount of oxygen that goes into the brain. The study showed that, even if the non-smoker has no other risk factors, mere exposure to second-hand smoke can increase the risk of cardiovascular damage greatly.

There are so many reasons these days to quit smoking Health, Political, Social and financial. Let’s take a look at each of these aspects and see how smoking relates to each.

Health

There are all the obvious health issues that we hear about such as Lung Cancer, Heart disease and respiratory disease.  Smokers are 10 times as likely to get lung cancer and emphysema as nonsmokers. But what about the others like cancer of the esophagus and throat, high blood pressure and pulmonary embolism. Smoking causes increased stomach acid, leading to heartburn and ulcers. Smokers have higher risk of deadly pancreatic cancer. The carcinogens from cigarettes are present in the urine and can lead bladder cancer, which is often fatal. High blood pressure from smoking can damage the kidneys.

Do you get out of breath when you exert yourself even a little bit. This could be a precursor to Heart disease or respiratory disease. Are your feet always cold. This could be due to high blood pressure and poor circulation.  Smoking constricts blood vessels and raises your heart rate and it takes about 60 minutes from taking your last puff for your blood pressure and pulse decrease.

Even if you don’t get cancer, do you want to be one of those people carrying an oxygen bottles everywhere you go for the rest of your life.

Everyone has heard about people committing suicide by breathing the exhaust (carbon monoxide) of their car. But did you know that each puff of cigarette smoke contains 3.2% carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide robs the blood of oxygen because the hemoglobin in your blood will pickup carbon monoxide molecules in favor of oxygen,  and it takes over an hour for the carbon monoxide levels in your blood return to normal after that last puff. Each cigarette you smoke contains at least 17 known poisons that you take into your body with each puff.

And not to mention the danger of second hand smoke to our children and other love ones. Children are the ones most affected by second hand smoke. Because their bodies are still developing, exposure them to the poisons in secondhand smoke puts children in danger of severe respiratory diseases and can hinder the growth of their lungs and the effects can last a lifetime.

If you smoke during your pregnancy you are not only risking your health but endangering the health of your unborn child. On average, babies of women who smoke weigh less at birth than babies of nonsmokers. Statistics have showed that infant mortality is 50 percent higher when the mother smokes. Children of smokers are also 2½ times more likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome, or crib death.

 Political

Today there are more and more laws being passed related to smoking, you can no longer smoke inside any public place and in some places you have to go to a designated smoking area even if you are outside. You cannot enjoy the cigarette with your cup of coffee after dinner or smoke while sitting at the bar, no you have to go outside in the cold to the smoking area for that all important smoke break.

There are places that if your smoke is drafted from your house to your neighbors they can report you to the police department for disciplinary action.

Many companies have started to refuse to hire smokers. Smokers cost more money than non-smokers to employ. Smokers take longer and more frequent breaks as well as use more sick days, and they cost more to insure.

Let face it as a smoker you do not have a legal leg to stand on, no rights and it is getting worse every day.

Social

Smoking causes premature aging and drying of the skin. The tobacco stains your fingers, fingernails and teeth. You have a yellow smile very embarrassing.

Your breath smells like an ashtray. Who want to kiss an ashtray.

Your close reeks of cigarette smoke.

If you smoke in your house it reeks of cigarette smoke and the paint is discolored and stained.

Your car smells and there are cigarette ashes everywhere and the glass and mirror are stained.

Financial

Remember when I said you no rights and no legal leg to stand on, well that’s not all, you are being fined for smoking. That’s right fined; in addition to the sales tax on that pack of cigarettes you have a sin tax for the sin of smoking. Cigarettes cost anywhere from .70 to .75 and .87 to .25 of that is tax.

The average cost of a pack of cigarettes is about .25. Let’s assume you smoke one pack per day. During the course of a year, those cigarettes are costing you 365 x .50 = 07.50. You think well that’s not too bad.

But what about the other cost related to smoking. Heath and life insurance cost more if you are a smoker. Increased dental care and cleaning costs. The cost of keeping your house and car cleaned not to mention your close and all the gum and breathe mints so you do not offend.

As you can see there are many reasons to quit smoking can you make a list of as many reasons not to stop.

Why Do We Smoke?

Before World War I, tobacco was smoked in the form of cigars. They were primarily smoked by the wealthy. Cigarettes, which are basically leftovers of the cigar making process, were smoked by the less affluent.
