Himalayan salt crystal lamps are used for centuries for their reputed health benefits, however do they work? According to several health consultants, salt rock lamps provide a myriad of health benefits.
THE SCIENCE
From a scientific perspective, this can be how salt crystal lamps work.
The atomic structure of crystal salt is certain electrically, not molecularly, and this permits the salt crystal to change back and forth from a crystalline to a liquid state.
The warmth of the bulb in the salt crystal lamp creates the next surface temperature than the surrounding air within the room. This attracts water molecules in the cooler surrounding air, ensuing in condensation on the surface of the rock crystal. This method allows the electrically bound sodium chloride mineral to separate into independent (positive) sodium and (negative) chloride ions.
Once the water molecules evaporate, the sodium and chloride ions revert to their crystalline mineral form. This natural ionization method takes place over and over again, invisible to the attention, and does not have an effect on the standard of the salt crystal.
When lit by a little lightweight bulb of fifteen watt or less, a rock crystal salt lamp emits an electrical charge that releases healthy negative ions into the air. These negative ions kill bacteria, molds, mildews and spores, odors, cigarette smoke, chemical gases, pet odors, pollens, mud and mud mites, animal dander, viruses, static electricity, carbon monoxide, and abundant more.
NEGATIVE IONS
In nature, negative ions are created through forces of rain storms, waterfalls, lightening, sunlight, ocean waves and winds. In fresh country air, we have a tendency to find up to four,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter (the dimensions of a sugar cube).Up to ten,000 negative ions are found near heavy surf, or close to a waterfall. That’s why we tend to feel thus refreshed and energized when we are close to these environments.
By distinction, the number of negative ions in metropolitan areas often will not even reach a hundred!
Our homes are terribly usually the source of the many health risks. For instance, many pollutants found within the air reside attach themselves to floating mud particles. During a take a look at conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, they found 53% less dust, and ninety five% less bacteria, in the air by ionizing the room.
Smart Housekeeping Magazine, in March 1999, had its engineers check an ionizer by using a smoke test, and found that it cleared out the smoke in a very tank.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS
Health practitioners in Europe, North America, Australia and Japan have been using salt crystal lamps extensively in their treatments for ailments like snoring, allergies, sinus issues, to reduce asthma attacks, respiratory problems and to enhance the immune system.
Our homes are filled with volatile organic compounds that may seriously affect our health. For instance, a fifteen-year study concluded that girls who make money working from home have a fifty four% higher death rate from cancer than those who work far from home. This was a right away results of the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many of that are found in common household products. Negative ions can help mitigate these volatile organic compounds.
The Enviromental Protection Agency within the U.S. ranks indoor air pollution together of the top five threats to public health. It should come back as no surprise then that many hospitals in Europe create ionization mandatory.
Yes, Himalayan salt crystal lamps do work. They’re a terribly attractive feature in any house, terribly safe, and will be employed in every room in your home. For optimal results, your salt crystal lamp ought to be left on as a lot of as possible.

Now that allergy season is once again in full-bloom many of us are finding ourselves sneezing away and reaching for tissues constantly ! Unfortunately, allergies can become more than just an annoyance for many. As the inflammation, swelling, and general irritation of the sinuses and throat continues over the years allergies develop into full blown sinus disease, cause sinus and throat polyps (tissue growths that cause other challenges), and some other nasty impacts on the body. So it is important to control your allergies not only for your immediate quality of life and convenience but also to prevent worse health challenges developing later on. A great book that talks about allergies and causation with sinus disease is the best selling book “Free Yourself From Sinus & Allergy Problems PERMANENTLY” by the well known Dr. Grossan. You can find this book at many allergy stores including “Allergy Liberation.”

SO what to do about those nasal allergies? Many of us simply pop down the nearest pharmacy and buy a load of drugs to knock us out for the season. This can also be a mistake. Many of the most popular nasal sprays fail to tell you adequately that they are in fact addictive and habit forming. Doctors quickly prescribe them and many are now over the counter for easy access. The challenge is that they very often cause dependence and your nasal system will stop working once you stop taking them. This problem of addiction has many people layering one problem on top of another making life much worse. Many brands are a cause for concern such as Afrin, Vicks, Sinex, Lemsip, and Afrazine that use the addictive active ingredient Oxymetazoline (and there are others to avoid as well). If you are going to take a nasal spray we recommend you stick with a natural one that is non addictive and not habit forming such as sinol, nasaleze, or sinus buster.

On to the main goal of this article. Top recommendations for fixing and stopping your allergies naturally with out drugs and with out chemicals.

1. Eating small amounts of “local” honey on a regular basis you are naturally desensitizing your body to allergens that you are most likely to encounter in your daily life.

2. If you are allergic to pollens, stay away from gardens during peak season and do not mow lawns.

3. Use a natural nasal allergen blocker such as nasaleze. This will stop the allergens at the source.

4. Practice nasal rinsing with saline. This method has been used to stop allergies for centuries. Your allergies act up once they reach a certain threshhold and rinsing 2x a day will usually keep you below that level where you become aggravated.

5. Try natural nasal sprays based with capsaicin that reduce the swelling and knock out the allergens such as Sinol and Sinus Buster.

6. Don’t smoke or allow others to smoke in your presence. Avoid irritants such as cigarette smoke, chemical fumes, or environmental toxins.

7. Replace carpets and rugs which tend to collect dust with hardwood or tiled floors. Replace carpeting with laminate flooring or another hard material that won’t collect dust mites and other allergens, especially in your bedroom.

8. Regularly dust with a wet cloth and use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.

9. Avoid those foods that trigger allergies and learn how to read food labels carefully.

10. Close your windows before you go to sleep. Allergens are highest in the early morning when flowers bloom.

11. A quantity of 500 ml carrot juice or a combination of carrot juice with beet and cucumber juices, has been found beneficial in the treatment of allergies.

12. Avoid touching or rubbing your eye with your fingers (try using cucumber slices to lessen itchiness).

13. Application of mashed almond leaves to the affected area is highly beneficial. This is one of the useful skin allergy cure.

14. Drink a glass of water with two tablespoons of cider vinegar. This is a good natural remedy for skin allergy.

15. Every part of neem can bee used for any skin allergies. Mostly leaves of Neem are made into paste to treat skin disorders and allergies.

16. If you venture out during spring and fall, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and wind.

17. Don’t hang clothing outdoors to dry (they may collect Pollen).

16. Make a paste from five grams of garden mint in water. Sieve the water now add 12 grams of sugar, drink this syrup twice a day for immediate relief. This is a good home remedy for skin allergy.

18. Five drops of Castor oil in half a cup of any fruit or vegetable juice, or plain water, and taken on an empty stomach in the morning, is beneficial for allergies of the intestinal tract, skin, and nasal passages.

19. You should be aware of what types of food can cause you allergies and be away from all those food while traveling.

20. You might have problems in digesting enzymes of milk which can lead to bloating and cramping which are symbols of allergy – so it is better to avoid milk when traveling.

21. Garlic is one of the most powerful natural anti-oxidants. You can crush it and have its juice to prevent any allergies related with bacteria. This will also be very effective in preventing sinus related allergies. You can also use this remedy if you often suffer from nasal congestion or running nose. Consuming only a few drops of garlic, every alternate day, will be sufficient for you.

Although they may seem like a new innovation, air purifiers have been around for more than 200 years. Beginning as protective masks for fireman, air purifiers have now evolved the ability to protect you and your family from airborne pollutants.

As allergies and asthma now affect more than 50 million Americans, the concern for safe indoor air quality has rapidly increased. Now more than ever, Americans are looking for ways to improve their indoor air quality. Air purifiers lead the pack in advancements for cleaner air.

Allergens like smoke, mold spores, pollen, bacteria, viruses, pet dander, and other pollutants damage your lungs and immune system. Unfortunately, most of these irritants cannot be seen by the naked eye. Air purifiers filter allergens and pollutants seen or unseen by the human eye. To remove these objects, air purifiers typically use filters, electrical attraction, or ozone.

Air filters utilize fine sieves that filter particles from circulating air. As air flows into the air purifier, the finer the sieve used, the smaller the particles it traps. The accepted benchmark for air filters has been set by the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, which are guaranteed to trap 99.97% of airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns. Microns are the standard unit used for measuring air particles. Each micron is equivalent to 1/25,400 of an inch. The naked eye cannot see anything this small, so pollutants like bacteria and viruses escape detection. Room air conditioner filters only capture particles 10 microns or larger. HEPA filters remove smaller allergens like dust, smoke, chemicals, asbestos, pollen, and pet dander.

The more times the air passes through the HEPA filter, the cleaner the air becomes. The room capacity of a HEPA air purifier will determine whether the air cleaner can handle your air purifying needs. Top-of-the-line brands like Austin Air purifiers will provide approximately 15 air exchanges per hour in an average room and contain an average of 15 lbs of activated carbon/zeolite blends, which adsorb chemicals and odors.

In addition to the HEPA filter, brands like AllerAir and IQAir offer an optional medical grade ultra-violet (UV) light system, used to quickly kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi upon entry into the air purifier. UV light also protects the HEPA filter from biological and viral contamination.

Electrical attraction is another technology utilized by air purifiers to trap particles. Three types of air cleaners work using electrical attraction: electrostatic precipitating cleaners, electret filters, and negative ion generators.

Electrostatic precipitating cleaners, or electronic air purifiers, draw particles in by fan and charge them with a series of high-voltage wires. Several plates (precipitating cells) carry the opposite electrical charge and attract the contaminants as they pass by the plates. Electronic air purifiers are perfect for individuals who don’t want to worry about the costly replacements of HEPA filters. Friedrich electrostatic air purifiers remove approximately 95% of all airborne particles and carry low energy costs for you.

Electret filters in air purifiers use synthetic fibers that create static charges to attract particles. Electret filters are offered in a variety of types including plain, pleated, disposable or reusable. Depending on the type of filter you need, will determine how often the filter requires replacement.

Some brands like Blueair combine the HEPA technology with their own electrostatic media filter technology, which charges the incoming particles instead of the filter. By marrying the two unique purification systems together, Blueair created a more effective air cleaner.

Negative ion generators or ionic air purifiers use tiny, charged wires or needles to create gas molecules with negative charges or ions that adhere to the airborne particles and collect in the filter. However, many ions end up back in the air, sticking to furnishings and other surfaces that may be stained by them.

Ionic air purifiers only remove certain types of particles and aren’t always effective against gases, chemicals, or odors. Some ionic air purifiers have been shown to re-circulate the same dirty particles that they draw in, making them much less effective than traditional air purifiers using HEPA filtration.

Instead of using filters to trap particles, ozone generators use high voltage electrical currents to convert oxygen to ozone, which acts as a powerful oxidant and breaks down molecules and microorganisms in the air. Several tests have proved that ozone generators are not very effective at removing indoor allergens.

Ozone, in fact, can be hazardous to your health, and both ozone generators and ionic air cleaners emit ozone. In nature, lightning creates ozone when it cuts through oxygen molecules in the air. In the atmosphere, ozone helps protect us from harmful UV rays; however, on the ground level, ozone is a powerful lung irritant. When created artificially, ozone can actually aggravate allergies and asthma, damaging the lining of nasal passages and lungs, causing coughing, throat irritation, chest pain, and shortness of breath. The Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association advise against using ozone generators.

Asbestos and radon are growing problems in homes today. Heating devices produce carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases, and chemicals like formaldehyde and ammonia are increasing in the home environment. Since most Americans stay indoors an average of 90% of the time, providing fresher and cleaner air has never been more important.

Finding an environment-friendly solution has become much easier. Learn about air purification today. The right air purifier will provide asthma and allergy sufferers with air free of airborne pollutants and establish healthy indoor air quality for you and your family.

If you’re ready to stop smoking, you should be mentally prepared. Here are some tips to help you on your journey to kicking the habit once and for all.

Take some time to write down the benefits of quitting smoking. Make a list of what you’ll gain when you stop smoking and read this list daily. Here are some ideas to get you started: save money, feel healthier, live longer, smell better, find a mate, etc.

Settle on a specific day to stop smoking and mark that day on your calendar.

You should make an appointment to visit your doctor prior to your quit date. It’s much easier to stop smoking with the encouragement and guidance you can get from a physician.

You must let your friends and family know that you’re quitting and when. Warn them ahead of time that you may be irritable and bad-tempered while you’re recovering from nicotine addiction. Ask them to be nonjudgmental and supportive during this time. There is a program that can significantly decrease your irritability and other symptoms. It’s called Quit Smoking Today and you’ll find a link in the resources section at the bottom of this article.

Start an exercise program or find some physical activity that you enjoy such as biking, swimming, hiking, etc. Working out can help reverse the damage from cigarette smoking and will reduce your stress.

Try meditation or at the very least, practice some deep breathing for about 3 to 5 minutes daily. Inhale slowly through your nose and hold for a few seconds then exhale slowly through your mouth. This will also help relieve your stress.

You might want to make an appointment to get your teeth cleaned. Your sense of taste will improve dramatically in as little as 2 days after you stop smoking. Having your teeth cleaned will feel great.

Drink plenty of water. Water will help flush nicotine and other smoking chemicals out of your body. It also helps with the oral cravings — the desire to be doing something with your mouth and hands. Besides, water is good for you and most people don’t get enough.

Make note of times or events that set off your desire for a cigarette such as after a meal, stress, driving, going to a bar, etc. Avoid these situations if you can. If it’s not possible to avoid them find other ways to deal with these triggers. For example, find something to hold in your hand that you can place in your mouth to replace cigarettes. There are companies that make artificial cigarettes for this purpose.

Finally, you need to believe that you can quit. Believe in yourself. Think of other times in your life when you achieved something difficult and remind yourself that you have what it takes to kick this habit.

Cigarette Smoking and the Respiratory Ailment of COPD

Cigarette smoking has been strongly linked to health conditions like heart disease and lung cancer. Other than these two dreaded disease, heavy smoking may also cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This condition causes inflammation and damages the small airways of the lung tissue and may cause breathing difficulties. COPD is usually a combination of two similar conditions: chronic bronchitis and chronic emphysema. Because cigarette smoking is the major cause of these two conditions, they often occur together in the same person. COPD damage is progressive and permanent and has become one of the fastest-growing health problems. It has become the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and is responsible for more than 96,000 deaths annually. Because of these health conditions the need to quit smoking has become more important than ever. Understanding COPD is essential in encouraging smokers to quit this dreaded and potentially fatal habit.

Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is caused by inhaling bronchial irritants like cigarette smoke, chemical fumes, air pollution, and environmental irritants like mold or dust. Cigarette smoke may increase the risk for infection because it damages the cilia or the small hair-like projections that protect the lungs from bacteria and other foreign particles out of the lungs. This disease develops slowly, middle aged and older individuals have heightened risks of getting diagnosed with bronchitis. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis may include wheezing, expectorating cough, chest pains, and persistent fatigue.

Emphysema

Emphysema is a chronic respiratory disease that is characterized by the enlargement of the alveoli or air sacks.  Emphysema may reduce the elasticity of the lungs and may result in the collapse of the bronchioles, the first airway that no longer contain cartilage. As this happens, air cannot leave the alveoli therefore hampering the function of the lungs. The lungs may lose their ability to shrink during exhalation. Reduced exhalation may also reduce the amount of air that is inhaled. Because of this condition, waste air is not easily removed from the lungs and oxygen-rich air is not restored. Individuals with emphysema may have a hard time breathing and oftentimes gasp for air. Emphysema is most common on individuals aged 50 and older and may occur with other respiratory disease like bronchitis.

Causes and symptoms of COPD may include the following:

Lifestyle. Cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for COPD and accounts for at least 80% of all COPD cases. Cigar and pipe smoking can also cause COPD. Air pollution and industrial dust and fumes are the known air pollutants that worsen the ailment.
Age. Chronic bronchitis is more common in people over 40 years old; emphysema occurs more often in people 65 years of age and older.
Socioeconomic class. COPD-related deaths are about twice as high among unskilled and semi-skilled laborers as among professionals.
Family clustering. It is thought that heredity predisposes people in certain families to the development of COPD when other causes, such as smoking and air pollution, are present.
Lung infections that can either be viral or bacterial.

Treatment for COPD is dependent on the patient’s condition and the severity of the disease. With a health program that involves respiratory care, disability and other symptoms can be prevented and therefore reducing the occurrence of early deaths. However, no treatments are proven to cure this disease. Certain treatments are only designed to alleviate symptoms and increase survival rate.

Rather than focusing on the cure, lifestyle changes that may prevent the development of COPD should be  emphasized. The occurrence of COPD may be prevented if individuals who smoke quit smoking, maintain good nutrition, drink lots of fluids, maintain proper weight, and exercise. Understanding the health risks of of COPD are essential in making smokers quit smoking.

Air is our main contact with the environment in which we find ourselves. Every day, we breathe in 15 kg of air; that’s more than our daily food intake. Air, in cities and confined environments where houses are really close together, consists of particles of different sizes charged of chemical pollutants. The finer particles will come into contact with the alveoli and will allow some pollutants go directly into the bloodstream, resulting in diseases. Our environment is directly linked to emergence of diseases. Purifying the air in your house becomes vital. Thanks to new technological methods, it is possible to purify the air you breathe by reducing the number of micro-particles.

Pollution of indoor environments

The environment in developed countries has changed profoundly over the past few decades. The habitats have become tight, insulated and have not allowed the walls to breathe. The urbanization, industrial pollution air pollution and the massive use of chemical pollutants have accentuated the importance of these new diseases created by man. In the United States, the result is appalling. Asthmatics have been numbered in the millions, not counting heart attack, infertility, asthma, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity disease.

Air pollution may increase the risk of heart attack

The fine particles of pollution can cause blood clots, many researchers have discovered. The discovery helps explain how air pollution can cause blood clotting and possibly heart attacks. New medical studies have shown that air pollution from trucks exhaust, buses, cars and certain factories increase the risk of heart disease and fatal heart attacks. Air pollution tends to provoke inflammation of the lungs. Once inflamed by pollution, the lungs secrete interleukin-6, a hormone of defense of the immune system that may aggravate the inflammation and makes it more conducive to blood clotting.

Air pollution can cause infertility, asthma and certain cancers

The more closed a domestic environment is, the more the air is polluted with major pollutants (acids, organic chemicals, metals, gases, and soil or dust particles); it must be purified in a consistent manner. Otherwise, the air is stagnant, full of moisture and becomes a factor conducive to new biological, chemical and organic pollutants. These pollutants can cause respiratory and inflammatory diseases – rhinitis, allergies, asthma, infertility, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes and certain systemic diseases (diseases that affect a number of organs and tissues, or affect the body as a whole).

Some combined chemicals have an ebullition power at low temperature and evaporate at room temperature. Their sources are from furniture, construction materials (paints, adhesives, flooring) and general maintenance. They are factors of serious diseases. Among them, only formaldehyde can be detected by a search for Immunoglobulin E (IgE). Formaldehyde is a carcinogen chemical compound. It does not affect the breathing capacity but potentiates the effects of other pollutants.

Some other toxic chemical that can be found in the air we breathe at home are glycol ethers. Glycol ethers are toxic for red blood cells, bone marrow and lymph. They can cause infertility in men and women. They are easily transmitted by contact with skin.

What can you do?

We deliver a complete air purification solution, removing a wide variety of particles, sub-micron particles, chemicals, gases, micro-organisms and odors. We all think that the air outside is much polluted containing so many harmful impurities and on the other hand we are very safe inside our houses. Well friends it’s a myth that the indoor air is very safe and healthy for us. Mostly the IAQ (indoor air quality) is taken for granted and not taken care of. As said by Mike Tringale, the Vice President of External Affairs at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, “A growing body of scientific evidence shows that the air inside our homes can contain more allergens and pollutants than the air outside. The month of May is celebrated as asthma and allergy day for the obvious reason of extreme weather. Let’s get some details of the indoor air. The indoor air can be divided into four main parts- particles, smoke, chemical, biological. All four parts are some or the other way responsible for allergies but particles and biological part come out to be the main reasons for various allergies. The most common allergens in the particle type are pollen, dust and dander. These are very small particles that can’t be seen by our naked eyes. They may be invisible and appear just an inconvenience for most of us but dangerous for those who have allergy from particles. It gives way to allergies, asthma and some serious health problems and affects our respiratory system adversely. It can be only prevented by keeping your house dust free by cleaning and vacuuming on a regular basis. Other important reason for allergies is biological group of the indoor air quality. The biological group consists of mold and fungi spores, germs, and bacteria. The mold and bacteria may cause various allergies and at the same time some respiratory problems. The molds are very common allergen in humid and damp areas. For example-a student of junior school was doing great in academics and was a scholarship holder. Suddenly after few days his asthma problem increased and his performance started deteriorating. No one could understand the reason but once he changed the school he was back to normal. His parents asked principal to make a check of the class room. While doing that it was found that there was mold in the crevices in the benches which caused the entire problem. To remove it, good air purifiers especially those with UV effect should be used in the houses. The UV rays destroy the DNA and kill the mold. The smoke from chimneys or from cigarette consists of many harmful chemicals. These chemicals act as allergens and are very harmful if inhaled specifically for those who are allergic to it. Allergies from a particular chemical may be very injurious to health. Therefore inhalation of smoke in any form should be avoided because sometimes we ourselves don’t know what chemical are we allergic to till we face the consequences. To remove it we should use air purifiers with heap and activated carbon filters. As a conclusion we know that to avoid all kinds of allergies proper air purifiers and filters should be placed in our houses as prevention is better than cure.

Stop Smoking Tips – Overcoming the Psychological Dependency on Cigarettes

Even though the addiction of cigarettes has a certain chemical basis, this basis is not likely to be particularly strong, unless you smoke a pack a day or more. When people feel uncomfortable or annoyed at the times when they cannot light up a cigarette, such as on an airplane or when in attendance of a certain social occasion, it is mostly psychological. So how to you overcome this psychological dependence and stop smoking?

Chemical Dependency

It is always recommended to seek advice from a physician regarding nicotine replacement therapy if you are a person that smokes one packet or more on a daily basis. Recent research that has been undertaken states that nicotine replacement may not in actual fact lead to higher success rates in remaining a non-smoker for a year or two. However it may prove to be a crucial factor in passing the first few days after quitting smoking with ease.

The extent and intensity of withdrawal symptoms can be significantly reduced with nicotine replacement. As well as this, it can compensate as much as 50% for the reduction in metabolic rate and any other physiological changes that can result in gaining weight when you quit smoking.

Mental Boredom

Boredom plays a big part when it comes to smoking. Even though boredom may not be the primary reason for smoking, lighting and holding a cigarette can become a habit in certain situations for many people. A cigarette is automatically reached for by many people when arriving at a party, having a drink in a bar, when making a telephone call, or when it is necessary for them to wait for something or someone without anything else to occupy themselves with.

Smoking is chosen by many people to simply pass the time when they think that there is nothing else to do. If you fit into this description, then it is imperative that you find different ways to replace the automatic act of smoking.

Adopting a particular behavior rather than smoking can make people feel positive about themselves. This is because they are being successful in resisting a cigarette. Rather than smoking a cigarette, many people choose to sip water, or use a toothpick or cocktail straw in order to do something with their hands and mouth. Certain people choose to complete the daily crossword puzzle in the newspaper, knit, or even pain in order to prove that they have the determination not to smoke.

If a large issue for you personally is boredom, then taking up a hobby will help you to quit smoking. Of course, it would be advised to ensure that you select a hobby that smoking does not go well with. Perhaps playing a computer game, writing, painting, or knitting would be a relaxing and interesting way to pass the time and prevent you from wanting a cigarette.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Cost – How to Quit Smoking When You Relapse

There is a statistic bantered around the smoking cessation community that states people who quit smoking will try on average 7 attempts before they are successful and finally quit for good. I’m not sure if there is any data to back up this claim, but it does “sound” about right. We all know people who have tried to quit time and time again without success. Often times these people fail to change their behavior that is commonly associated with their smoking habits.

When you breathe in (inhale), small, bristly hairs near the openings of your nostrils filter out dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Bits that slip through become attached to the mucus membrane, which has tiny, hair-like structures called cilia on its surface. But sometimes germs get through the cilia and other defense systems in the respiratory tract and can cause illness.

Bronchitis can be acute or chronic. An acute medical condition comes on quickly and can cause severe symptoms, but it lasts only a short time (no longer than a few weeks). Acute bronchitis is most often caused by one of a number of viruses that can infect the respiratory tract and attack the bronchial tubes. Infection by certain bacteria can also cause acute bronchitis. Most people have acute bronchitis at some point in their lives.

Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, can be mild to severe and is longer lasting — from several months to years. With chronic bronchitis, the bronchial tubes continue to be inflamed (red and swollen), irritated, and produce excessive mucus over time. The most common cause of chronic bronchitis is smoking.

Bronchitis (pronounced: brahn-kite-uss) is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, the airways that connect the trachea (windpipe) to the lungs. This delicate, mucus-producing lining covers and protects the respiratory system, the organs and tissues involved in breathing. When a person has bronchitis, it may be harder for air to pass in and out of the lungs than it normally would, the tissues become irritated and more mucus is produced. The most common symptom of bronchitis is a cough.

People who have chronic bronchitis are more susceptible to bacterial infections of the airway and lungs, like pneumonia. (In some people with chronic bronchitis, the airway becomes permanently infected with bacteria.) Pneumonia is more common among smokers and people who are exposed to secondhand smoke.

Signs and Symptoms

Acute bronchitis often starts with a dry, annoying cough that is triggered by the inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. Other symptoms may include:

cough that may bring up thick white, yellow, or greenish mucus
headache
generally feeling ill
chills
fever (usually mild)
shortness of breath
soreness or a feeling of tightness in the chest
wheezing (a whistling or hissing sound with breathing)

Chronic bronchitis is most common in smokers, although people who have repeated episodes of acute bronchitis sometimes develop the chronic condition. Except for chills and fever, a person with chronic bronchitis has a chronic productive cough and most of the symptoms of acute bronchitis, such as shortness of breath and chest tightness, on most days of the month, for months or years.

A person with chronic bronchitis often takes longer than usual to recover from colds and other common respiratory illnesses. Wheezing, shortness of breath, and cough may become a part of daily life. Breathing can become increasingly difficult.

In people with asthma, bouts of bronchitis may come on suddenly and trigger episodes in which they have chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, and difficulty exhaling (breathing out). In a severe episode of asthmatic bronchitis, the airways can become so narrowed and clogged that breathing is very difficult.

Causes of Bronchitis-

Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses, and it may occur together with or following a cold or other respiratory infection. Germs such as viruses can be spread from person to person by coughing. They can also be spread if you touch your mouth, nose, or eyes after coming into contact with respiratory fluids from an infected person.

Smoking (even for a brief time) and being around tobacco smoke, chemical fumes, and other air pollutants for long periods of time puts a person at risk for developing chronic bronchitis.

What Do Doctors Do?

If a doctor thinks you may have bronchitis, he or she will examine you and listen to your chest with a stethoscope for signs of wheezing and congestion.

In addition to this physical examination, the doctor will ask you about any concerns and symptoms you have, your past health, your family’s health, any medications you’re taking, any allergies you may have, and other issues (including whether you smoke). This is called the medical history. Your doctor may order a chest X-ray to rule out a condition like pneumonia, and may sometimes order a breathing test (called spirometry) to rule out asthma.

Because acute bronchitis is most often caused by a virus, the doctor may not prescribe an antibiotic (antibiotics only work against bacteria, not viruses).

The doctor will recommend that you drink lots of fluids, get plenty of rest, and may suggest using an over-the-counter or prescription cough medicine to relieve your symptoms as you recover.

In some cases, the doctor may prescribe a bronchodilator (pronounced: bron-ko-dy-lay-ter) or other medication typically used to treat asthma. These medications are often given through inhalers or nebulizer machines and help to relax and open the bronchial tubes and clear mucus so it’s easier to breathe.

If you have chronic bronchitis, the goal is to reduce your exposure to whatever is irritating your bronchial tubes. For people who smoke, that means quitting!

If you have bronchitis and don’t smoke, try to avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.

Smoking causes lung damage in many ways. For example, it can cause temporary paralysis of the cilia and over time kills the ciliate airway lining ciliated cells completely. Eventually, the airway lining stops clearing smoking-related debris, irritants, and excess mucus from the lungs altogether. When this happens, a smoker’s lungs become even more vulnerable to infection. Over time, harmful substances in tobacco smoke permanently damage the airways, increasing the risk for emphysema, cancer, and other serious lung diseases. Smoking also causes the mucus-producing glands to enlarge and make more mucus. Along with the toxic particles and chemicals in smoke, this causes a smoker to have a chronic cough.

Prevention

What’s the best way to avoid getting bronchitis? Washing your hands often helps to prevent the spread of many of the germs that cause the condition — especially during cold and flu season.

If you don’t smoke, don’t ever start smoking — and if you do smoke, try to quit or cut down. Try to avoid being around smokers because even secondhand smoke can make you more susceptible to viral infections and increase congestion in your airway. Also, be sure to get plenty of rest and eat right so that your body can fight off any illnesses that you come in contact with.

International Statistics on Scabies

We all know that scabies is one of the commonly occurring skin conditions across the world. There have been numerous accounts which suggest that the scabies epidemics usually occur in 30 year cycles. For the most part, these accounts coincided with the wars in the 20th century. Since scabies does not happen to be a reportable disease, all data is based on variable notification and hence it is difficult to ascertain the incidence of scabies.

Signs and Symptoms of Diabetic Nephropathy An overview

The GFR remains elevated or has returned to normal, but glomerular damage has progressed to significant microalbuminuria (small but above-normal level of the protein albumin in the urine). Patients in stage 2 excrete more than 30 mg of albumin in the urine over a 24-hour period. Significant microalbuminuria will progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Therefore, all diabetes patients should be screened for microalbuminuria on a routine (yearly) basis.

Unani approach in the management of chronic kidney disease

The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs that lie on either side of the spine in the lower middle of the back. Each kidney weighs about ¼ pound and contains approximately one million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron is made of a glomerulus and a tubule. The glomerulus is a miniature filtering or sieving device while the tubule is a tiny tube like structure attached to the glomerulus. The kidneys are connected to the urinary bladder by tubes called ureters.
