You have been thinking that it’s time to quit smoking. But maybe you’ve been thinking that its time to quit smoking ever since you started and you are still smoking. You know that the health benefits of quitting are incredible. Still, you are smoking a cigarette or thinking of smoking one right now. Have you examined your reasons for not quitting? Maybe you think you can’t handle the withdrawal symptoms.
Try looking at it this way: Smoking cigarettes is like pointing a gun at your head. The gun won’t go off until ten or twenty years have passed. The thing is that the gun will go off eventually. How many years have you been smoking? Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, forty? However long it’s been, the time to quit smoking is now. Really, it was yesterday, but now will have to do. Put that gun down. Stop embarrassing yourself in public. When nonsmokers see someone smoking, they make judgments about it. Stop giving them a reason to judge you.
Not only is there an increasing social stigma attached to smokers, but the health benefits of quitting are endless. Do it now. Don’t keep putting it off. You know that your body can’t handle smoking without taxing years off of your life. If the financial cost hasn’t caused you to stop smoking, then quit for the sake of the health benefits from quitting.
No one thinks that it is easy to stop smoking, but it is worth it to quit smoking and quit committing slow and painful suicide.
• If you stop smoking, you will also eliminate over four thousand different poisonous chemicals from your body.
• If you quit smoking, you will be able to eat comfortably in any restaurant whether they allow smoking or not. You will also not have to wait for a seat in the smoking section if the state or country you are in allows for smoking in public eateries.
• If you stop smoking, you will be able to save a percentage of your income. You can put the money that you have been spending on smoking into a jar or a savings account. At the end of a year, you will probably have enough money to make a very nice purchase or go on vacation.
• If you quit smoking, you will not repel nonsmokers who see you smoking or smell the smoke on your clothes and skin. Smoking is such a stigmatized habit now that you will surely see a difference in the way that the world interacts with you if you stop smoking.
• If you’ve been smoking for many years, imagine what you have been missing out on in fragrances and foods. Maybe you don’t really know what different spices taste like because your taste buds and sense of smell are overloaded with the many different poisons that are in tobacco products. If you stop smoking, you will find out what fragrances you have been missing out on.
The health benefits of quitting are important. The social and financial benefits are also important. Quitting is important, but it is not easy. You will not only face the psychological struggle when you quit smoking. You will also face some physical challenges. Some of these common physical and psychological challenges are listed below.
• When you stop smoking, you might find yourself feeling depressed.
• When you quit smoking, you might find that you are struggling with insomnia or changes in your sleep patterns.
• You might find that you are cranky, frustrated or irritable when you stop smoking.
• You might find that your appetite is greatly increased, and this could lead to some weight gain when you quit smoking.
If you really think that you cannot handle the physical and psychological challenges, there are various methods that people have found to be very helpful when it was time to quit smoking. Research a bit on the new and powerful methods to stop smoking.

When a woman who smokes starts to think about having children, she needs to think about quitting smoking. Women who smoke during their pregnancy take a huge risk with their unborn baby’s health. When she smokes during pregnancy, so does her baby. If your health isn’t enough to make you quit smoking, then the health of your baby should be. If she is willing to take such risk with her potential baby’s health, maybe she’s not ready.
Why am I so harsh on the subject? Smoking during pregnancy affects your baby’s health before, during, and after your baby is born. There is a greater chance that she will lose the baby during pregnancy. The baby could also be born too early, before the lungs are ready, so he or she will have trouble breathing. The baby will be smaller and more likely to need special care and stay longer in the hospital. Some may die either at birth or within the first year.
Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals; the worst of these chemicals are nicotine and carbon monoxide. When a women smokes during pregnancy, the toxins gets into their bloodstream. This is her baby’s only source of oxygen and nutrients. A shortage of oxygen can have devastating effects on her baby’s growth and development. Smoking during pregnancy doubles the chances that a baby will be born too early or weigh less than 5 1/2 pounds at birth. Smoking also more than doubles the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth.
Undersize babies tend to have underdeveloped bodies. Their lungs may not be ready to work on their own, which means they may spend their first days or weeks attached to a respirator. After they’re breathing on their own (or even if they did from the start), these babies may have continuing breathing problems — because of delayed lung development or other adverse effects of nicotine. Children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are especially vulnerable to asthma, and have double or even triple the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Not to mention stunting a baby’s growth in the womb can have negative consequences that last a lifetime.
Smoking during pregnancy can have lifelong effects on your baby’s brain. Children of pregnant smokers are especially likely to have a learning disorder, behavioral problems, and relatively low IQs. Recent animal studies suggest that nicotine in the womb can program a baby’s brain for a future addiction.
Cutting Down vs. Quitting? The more cigarettes you smoke per day, the greater chances of developing these health problems. There is no “safe” level of smoking while pregnant. The only way to really protect her baby is to quit. Cutting down is better than doing nothing but it does not eliminate your problems just decreases them a little. A smoker’s body is especially sensitive to the first doses of nicotine each day, and even just a few will significantly tighten blood vessels. A few cigarettes a day are safer than a whole pack, but the difference isn’t as great as you might think.
When to Quit? NOW! If you’re pregnant don’t wait any longer. The best time to quit is when a woman is planning to get pregnant before becoming pregnant or soon after she finds out that she is already pregnant. If she does quit before 16 weeks, her baby will probably weigh the same as the baby of a woman who has never smoked. If she quits within the first three or four months of her pregnancy she can lower her baby’s chance of being born too small and with lots of health problems. Even if a woman quits at the end of her pregnancy, she can help her baby get more oxygen and have a better chance of making it. It’s never too late to quit, but the earlier the better for both the mother and her baby!
How to Quit? Even though you’re aware of the dangers of smoking, it’s not always easy to give up the habit. The pull of nicotine can overwhelm your good intentions.
1 She can ask for help from her doctor for different ways to quit.
2 Make a list of her reasons for wanting to quit, for herself as well as for her baby.
3 Talk to family and friends. Support can make all the difference.
4 Ask people who smoke not to smoke around you.
5 Do not go to places where many people are smoking such as bars or clubs, and smoking sections of restaurants.
6 Set a Quit-Date; the sooner the better. If a woman is not ready to set a date, she can begin to cut down on smoking.
7 She can try the four D’s: Delay, Deep Breathe, Drink Water, and Do Something Else.
8 Keep mints or gum (preferably sugarless) on hand for those times when you get the urge to smoke.
9 Drink less caffeinated beverages; caffeine may stimulate your urge to smoke. Also avoid alcohol, as it may also increase your urge to smoke and can be harmful to your baby.
10 Stay active to keep your mind off smoking and help relieve tension: take a walk, exercise, read a book, or try a new a hobby.
11 Change your habits connected with smoking. If you smoked while driving or when feeling stressed, try other activities to replace smoking.
12 I think the best way for a pregnant woman to quit is to think of her baby being born healthy.
How Does Secondhand Smoke Affect Pregnancy? If you are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke, you increase your and your baby’s risk of developing lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, allergies, asthma, and other health problems.
Babies exposed to secondhand smoke may also develop reduced lung capacity and are at higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Smoking after the Baby is Born. It makes no sense at all for her to go back to smoking! Even after the baby is born, her smoking can hurt the baby.
Babies have very small lungs and airways which get even smaller when they breathe smoke-filled air. Smoking can make it hard for the baby to breathe. It can cause lung problems like bronchitis and pneumonia that could put the baby back in the hospital.

Quitting smoking isn’t easy. You feel irritated, you tend to have withdrawal symptoms, and you constantly crave some nicotine – but remember that kicking the habit for good has numerous health benefits. We give you some tips on the prevention of smoking.
Remember that there’s a concrete reason behind you wanting to quit. Are you concerned about your own health and the health of your family members? Concentrate on that one reason and let it boost your strength, self-confidence, and self-respect. You’ll come closer to a healthier body. Control your tobacco cravings by doing something constructive. Read a book, or watch a documentary. Take some exercise – go jogging, go for a swim – anything works, really.
Avoid places where smoking is allowed – like bars and restaurants. Sit in the non-smoking section at restaurants, this will help you resist the urge to light up. Try chewing some celery or a cinnamon stick, if you miss having something in your mouth. Sometimes just fiddling with a toothpick can help. And if you miss having something to hold in your fingers, try a pencil or a pen, just to give yourself that feeling. Anything but a cigarette, right? You need to concentrate on the prevention of smoking.
Stay away from drinking alcohol, coffee and tea, as these are drinks associated with smoking. Eat frequent meals in small or in moderate quantities, which will maintain your blood sugar level throughout the day, you’ll feel energetic and the craving to smoke will not bother you. Keep reminding yourself of the reason why you’re trying for the prevention of smoking in the first place. Prevention of smoking can be done by soaking in a luxurious bubble bath when the cravings get strong. Remember why you are quitting in the first place, and promise yourself that you will not give into temptation. If you even so much as touch a cigarette after promising yourself that you will quit, your thoughts on the prevention of smoking will have gone down the drain. Call a friend if the cravings get uncontrollable, and keep all cigarettes and ash-trays safely hidden away.
Another good way to achieve the prevention of smoking is by avoiding triggers to smoke – like being in the company of smokers, or sitting in the smoking section at restaurants.
Use aids for the prevention of smoking, like nicotine lozenges, nicotine inhalers, nicotine patches, and Stop Smoking pills. Finally, follow the 3 Ds’, when cravings hit: Do something else, Delay smoking / tobacco consumption, Deep Breathing. Every time is a good time for the prevention of smoking, so build up your grit and determination, and you won’t go wrong! Besides, adult smokers reduce their average lifespan by 13 to 14 years. What more reason do you need?

About two months ago, I walked into a restaurant located somewhere in Lagos to pick up a bowl of Fish soup. While my soup was being prepared, I noticed a group of white folks seated at a round table and smoking cigarettes. Amidst them were two black men and a half-caste little girl who was coughing and sneezing repeatedly. This little girl, my humble self, other customers and workers in this restaurant, were all at risk of the harmful health effects of secondhand smoking.
The smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette or that is expelled to the air by a smoker is referred to as Secondhand Smoke. The inhalation of secondhand smoke otherwise known as Passive Smoking is a very significant public health hazard.
About a third of the world population is exposed to the dangers of secondhand smoking; annually, thousands of deaths have been linked to this hazard. Those particularly at risk are workers and people that hang out in bars and restaurants, children and pregnant women.
Secondhand Smoke contains about 4000 chemicals that are harmful to health. 69 of these chemicals are carcinogens (cancer- causing) and others are toxins that have been scientifically proven to cause various diseases in humans and even animals. They include hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, tar, benzene, ammonia e.t.c.
Diseases caused by these chemicals range from cancers (lung, bladder, breast, kidney, leukaemia e.t.c), respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema e.t.c, coronary artery disease and stroke, to middle ear infections, sudden infant death syndrome, aggravation of asthma in children and miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women and erectile dysfunction in men.
There are no safe limits to exposure to secondhand smoke. Children are very vulnerable because of their underdeveloped immune system. They are not only exposed at bars and restaurants, they are also exposed when they live with people that smoke. This is because the chemicals in Secondhand Smoke can stick to clothes, hair, nails, skin and even cars (for several months), and children and pregnant women can easily acquire these chemicals from a smoker.
Studies have shown that 13% of all middle ear infections in children are caused by secondhand smoking. Passive smoking increases the risk of coronary artery disease by 30%, and also increases the risk of lung cancer and stroke. Over 3000 non-smokers die every year from lung cancer caused by secondhand smoking. Carbon monoxide in secondhand smoke is a known cause of growth retardation and developmental toxicity in unborn babies. Similarly, benzene causes chromosomal abnormalities in fetuses.
Since smokers are responsible for their health despite their knowledge of the health damaging effects of tobacco smoking, the health of non-smokers should be protected not only by the smokers but also by the law.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) through the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) has come up with some guidelines to help protect us from the harmful effects of secondhand smoking. These guidelines are part of the articles of the FCTC, which is a treaty with 168 countries (Nigeria inclusive) as signatories.
Several countries are protecting their citizens through effective legislation and enforcement of the FCTC articles to achieve 100% smoke-free public places. Top on the list of such countries are Norway, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, USA, Italy, New Zealand e.t.c. In Africa, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda have been able to enact smoke-free policies, though the enforcement of these policies is still relatively weak. Similarly in Nigeria, the FCT, Osun state and Lagos state have all enacted smoke-free legislation sometime in the past, the enforcement of this law is extremely weak.
Generally speaking, Nigerians are still exposed to dangers of Secondhand Smoking as the Nigerian National Tobacco Bill (NTCB) is still pending in the National Assembly and yet to be passed into law.
Naturally, the tobacco industry is opposed to the passage of this bill and will continue to benefit tremendously from its delayed passage, all at the expense of the health of Nigerians (smokers and non-smokers).
Several arguments have been brought forward to oppose the enactment of this bill. One of such is the issue of unemployment that could arise from an enforcement of 100% smoke-free public places. Evidence based research in countries where these laws have been enacted shows that it does not portend any negative economic impact and some long-term economic gains were even noted.
Conversely, evidence shows that smoke-free legislation reduces the number of hospital admissions for heart disease. A study carried out at the University of California, USA in 2009, showed a 15% decline in heart-attack hospitalizations in the first year after smoke-free legislation was passed, and 36% after three years. A similar study also shows that women, non-smokers, and people under age 60 had the most reduction in risk of heart attack.
Double ventilation and designated smoking rooms are other alternatives suggested by the tobacco industry. Studies have shown that all these are ineffective in reducing the harm caused by passive smoking, as the secondhand smoke sticks to surfaces and leave toxins behind for several months. Also, smoke travels from smoking sections to non-smoking sections of restaurants and bars, leaving both staff and customers unprotected. Workers at designated smoking rooms would still be at risk and there is no adequate ventilation system in the world that can completely remove secondhand smoke. The fact that people cannot see or smell secondhand smoke does not guarantee their protection against its dangers.
This brings me to the story of Heather Crowe, who suffered from lung cancer and died in 2006, at the age of 57. She worked for several years as a waitress in a Canadian restaurant and was exposed to secondhand smoking for that long. Shortly after she was diagnosed, she pioneered a nationwide campaign against secondhand smoking. Today, Canadian citizens are protected from the deadly claws of secondhand smoking by the effective legislation and enforcement of 100% smoke-free public places.
The importance of the effective passage and enforcement of the Nigerian National Tobacco Control Bill cannot be overemphasized. We all have a role to play, our legislators have within their hands, the power to save our generation from the scourge of the tobacco industry. The government has a huge responsibility in protecting our children, pregnant women, workers at bars and restaurants and the entire population from the dangers of secondhand smoking. The clock is ticking and more lives will be lost if no action is taken.

A large part of customer service success is creating a seamless experience. Customer needs are anticipated; systems are in place; employees are trained. The company runs like a well-oiled machine. But what happens when the unexpected happens? Customers have an “unusual” request or they simply don’t know the rules of the system? The unexpected, I suggest, provides the opportunity to stretch the system, improve the system, or even forget the system and Wow a customer.
I arrived late at a hotel in Cambridge, MA the night before an 8 am training, dressed for the cold weather in brown boots and heavy trousers. When I got to my room I unpacked my lovely, gray suit only to discover that I had left my black heels at home. I looked down at my feet and had to admit the brown boots were not even an option.
I went to the concierge for help. It was after 10 pm. Nothing was open. All of the shops in the area opened at 9 am, no help again. I was desperate. I pressed the concierge, “There’s nothing that can be done?” Silence. I put on my best pathetic gaze and repeated, “Nothing…?”
The concierge contemplated further then asked, “What size are you?” Full of hope I blurted out my shoe size for all to hear. The concierge stepped out from behind the desk, pointed to the black heels on her feet and asked, “Will these work?” I could have kissed her. She gave me the shoes right off of her feet!
After conducting a program in Fort Smith, AR I wanted to have a nice dinner. The hotel there recommended an Italian restaurant, but neglected to mention that they take reservations only. I arrived early at the restaurant, about 5:30 pm, and requested a table for one, non-smoking.
The first question in response was, “Reservation?” I said, “No.” The second question was, “Do you have a date joining you?” I said, “Don’t rub it in.” The gentleman behind the desk was well humored and friendly and explained the reservation situation. I confessed I didn’t know and was from out of state.
He attempted to accommodate me in the schedule. The non-smoking section was full so he asked one of his servers about the smoking habits of the guests in the smoking section, “What about the Jones’?” The server said, “They smoke like chimneys. She wouldn’t be comfortable there.” “What about the Smith’s?” “They’re chain smokers too.”
The gentleman disappeared for a few minutes and upon returning produced a table for one in the non-smoking section. I was reading the menu when a server seated a table of five. They started to pull out cigarettes. I gasped quietly. The server quickly reappeared and said, “I’m sorry. This is the non-smoking section. Follow me.” This happened two more times with different servers. The gentleman had rearranged the entire floor plan of the restaurant to accommodate me!
For companies with excellent systems in place, the next frontier in customer service is Wow, handling the unexpected creatively. I have observed that companies and professionals practicing creative customer service successfully have two things in common.
The first commonality is that they care. Management cares. Employees care. Everyone cares a great deal about people. They like to help people solve problems. In fact, not helping people would be like kicking a puppy. The concierge at the hotel cared about my shoe predicament and personally decided to go above and beyond. How much does your company care? How much do you care?
The second commonality is that employees have authority. Even when people care, if their hands are tied they can’t help. In addition, employees who aren’t especially “caring” might be motivated to be creative for customers simply because it feels good to exercise their authority. The gentleman managing the restaurant that night cared and had the authority to accommodate a guest who didn’t know the reservation rules. Do you have enough authority to be creative?
With all of the advances in technology, doing a good job isn’t good enough to separate from the pack. The prize will go to the one creating new frontiers. How far will you go to Wow a customer?

A large part of customer service success is creating a seamless experience. Customer needs are anticipated; systems are in place; employees are trained. The company runs like a well-oiled machine. But what happens when the unexpected happens? Customers have an “unusual” request or they simply don’t know the rules of the system? The unexpected, I suggest, provides the opportunity to stretch the system, improve the system, or even forget the system and Wow a customer.

A large part of customer service success is creating a seamless experience. Customer needs are anticipated; systems are in place; employees are trained. The company runs like a well-oiled machine. But what happens when the unexpected happens? Customers have an “unusual” request or they simply don’t know the rules of the system? The unexpected, I suggest, provides the opportunity to stretch the system, improve the system, or even forget the system and Wow a customer.
I arrived late at a hotel in Cambridge, MA the night before an 8 am training, dressed for the cold weather in brown boots and heavy trousers. When I got to my room I unpacked my lovely, gray suit only to discover that I had left my black heels at home. I looked down at my feet and had to admit the brown boots were not even an option.
I went to the concierge for help. It was after 10 pm. Nothing was open. All of the shops in the area opened at 9 am, no help again. I was desperate. I pressed the concierge, “There’s nothing that can be done?” Silence. I put on my best pathetic gaze and repeated, “Nothing…?”
The concierge contemplated further then asked, “What size are you?” Full of hope I blurted out my shoe size for all to hear. The concierge stepped out from behind the desk, pointed to the black heels on her feet and asked, “Will these work?” I could have kissed her. She gave me the shoes right off of her feet!
After conducting a program in Fort Smith, AR I wanted to have a nice dinner. The hotel there recommended an Italian restaurant, but neglected to mention that they take reservations only. I arrived early at the restaurant, about 5:30 pm, and requested a table for one, non-smoking.
The first question in response was, “Reservation?” I said, “No.” The second question was, “Do you have a date joining you?” I said, “Don’t rub it in.” The gentleman behind the desk was well humored and friendly and explained the reservation situation. I confessed I didn’t know and was from out of state.
He attempted to accommodate me in the schedule. The non-smoking section was full so he asked one of his servers about the smoking habits of the guests in the smoking section, “What about the Jones’?” The server said, “They smoke like chimneys. She wouldn’t be comfortable there.” “What about the Smith’s?” “They’re chain smokers too.”
The gentleman disappeared for a few minutes and upon returning produced a table for one in the non-smoking section. I was reading the menu when a server seated a table of five. They started to pull out cigarettes. I gasped quietly. The server quickly reappeared and said, “I’m sorry. This is the non-smoking section. Follow me.” This happened two more times with different servers. The gentleman had rearranged the entire floor plan of the restaurant to accommodate me!
For companies with excellent systems in place, the next frontier in customer service is Wow, handling the unexpected creatively. I have observed that companies and professionals practicing creative customer service successfully have two things in common.
The first commonality is that they care. Management cares. Employees care. Everyone cares a great deal about people. They like to help people solve problems. In fact, not helping people would be like kicking a puppy. The concierge at the hotel cared about my shoe predicament and personally decided to go above and beyond. How much does your company care? How much do you care?
The second commonality is that employees have authority. Even when people care, if their hands are tied they can’t help. In addition, employees who aren’t especially “caring” might be motivated to be creative for customers simply because it feels good to exercise their authority. The gentleman managing the restaurant that night cared and had the authority to accommodate a guest who didn’t know the reservation rules. Do you have enough authority to be creative?
With all of the advances in technology, doing a good job isn’t good enough to separate from the pack. The prize will go to the one creating new frontiers. How far will you go to Wow a customer?
