Since civilization began, mothers have the advantage of the convenience of sleeping with their babies. It is only in the last two centuries, among western industrialized nations and slept separately from the baby has become appropriate. Research shows that infants who share a bed with their mothers cry less often and sister for a longer time. Co-sleeping will provide additional food at night and added protection for your child. Sleeping with the mother gives a baby a steady supply of feelings and sensations that could possibly compensation for neurological immaturity has a child at birth.

Co-sleeping May provide some protection against SIDS (sudden death syndrome child). Children who sleep with their mothers sleep less soundly and have increased awareness of maternal presence. Some SIDS deaths are associated with arousal deficiencies in the part of a child. Increased arousal of the child in the presence of the mother could make a difference in the number of SIDS deaths experienced in this country each year, although it has not yet been scientifically proven.

The habits, parents must be considered in determining if co-sleeping is right for a particular baby. Smoking, drugs, alcohol or are dominant factors in cases where a baby was accidentally smothered. Co-sleeping has been practicing for thousands of years until relatively recently. The advantages of co-sleeping are numerous, and the disadvantages are few. Use your own judgement and take into consideration when deciding on your lifestyle if co-sleeping is the right thing for you and your baby. Changing views in the past few decades have made a practice co-sleeping undesirable in some cultures. Our ancestors routinely slept with their babies as a means of protection and convenience. Only you can decide if co-sleeping is for his family.

Congratulations for reaching the epoch making decision of your life! Getting pregnant is your chance to play God, create and bring a new life into this world. Statistics show that 25% couples get pregnant in the first month of trying to conceive a baby, 60% couples get pregnant in six months of trying to conceive baby, 75% couples get pregnant in nine months of trying to conceive a baby and 80% couples will get pregnant within a year. About 90% couples get pregnant in 12 months of trying to conceive a baby. ‘Trying to Conceive a Baby’ will be your guide as you set on your beautiful journey. More on pregnancy.

Before Trying to Conceive a Baby
Nutrition for Trying to Conceive
For mothers-to-be, nutrition is the most vital part when it comes to trying to conceive a baby. Following a nutritious diet makes the body healthy and prepares it better. The first and foremost rule of trying to conceive a baby is that you have to eliminate fast food. Fast food deteriorates your body at a very fast pace. It may offer you convenience but, in terms of nutrients it’s a total waste. Have a balanced diet that will give you your daily dose of nutrients. Folic acid, Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are all essential nutrients for pre-natal care.

Exercise for Trying to Conceive
Most of the gynecologists will tell you that you have to exercise in order to be a fit mother. Exercises such as cycling, aerobics, yoga, tennis and weight training are fabulous to keep you fit. It has been found, that women who do not exercise are more prone to contracting gestational diabetes if they do not exercise. Exercising also relieves the body from stress and anxiety, which makes your lifestyle healthy. More on yoga during pregnancy.

Call It Quits
Smoking cigarettes, marijuana, drinking alcohol and taking any other kinds of psychotropic drugs can be a great obstacle while trying to conceive a baby. Smoking, especially, increases your chances of miscarriage during pregnancy. Additionally, these drugs can also cause developmental delays, behavioral and learning problem among new born babies. Having a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a healthy diet are very crucial aspects while trying to conceive a baby.

Calculate the Cycle
Understand your monthly menstrual cycle. Some women have irregular menstrual cycle, if the same is the case with you, please consult your fertility doctor or gynecologist. Some women have a 28 day cycle and some have 32 day cycle. Your monthly menstrual cycle is calculated from the first day you start to the first day of successive cycle. Keep a track of how long your periods last and when does ovulation occur.

Lose Control
Many birth control pills contain estrogen and progesterone to prevent ovulation. Firstly, the effects of the pill depend on your body type. You may get pregnant immediately after getting off the pills or it may take some time. It’s advisable that you wait for about 2-3 months, before trying to conceive a baby, after getting off the pill, as there may be a few chances of birth defects due to hormones in the system. More on birth control.

When is the Best Time to Conceive?
For instance, if your most fertile days are 14 days before the next cycle, then you need to have an intercourse everyday with your partner. Having an intercourse will lessen the sperm count but the effort will be viable. A sperm lives for 3-5 days post ejaculation and an ovum is viable within 12 to 24 hours after being released. Calculate the math and now you know what goes into making a life! More on how to get pregnant fast.

Position It Well
Positions while having a sexual intercourse also matter while trying to conceive a baby. Lie down on your back for 15 minutes after having an intercourse. This increases the chances of retaining the sperm in your body. Having a love making session with a pillow under your hips, will position your cervix well for welcoming the sperms to their final destination. So take a better stance the next time!

Having a baby can give you the biggest joy in the world. Eating healthy, staying fit and saying no to intoxicants is the first step towards trying to conceive. It’s a sincere hope that these trying to conceive tips will help you conceive the bundle of joy you’ve always wished for! Good luck!

When a woman who smokes starts to think about having children, she needs to think about quitting smoking. Women who smoke during their pregnancy take a huge risk with their unborn baby’s health. When she smokes during pregnancy, so does her baby. If your health isn’t enough to make you quit smoking, then the health of your baby should be. If she is willing to take such risk with her potential baby’s health, maybe she’s not ready.

Why am I so harsh on the subject? Smoking during pregnancy affects your baby’s health before, during, and after your baby is born. There is a greater chance that she will lose the baby during pregnancy. The baby could also be born too early, before the lungs are ready, so he or she will have trouble breathing. The baby will be smaller and more likely to need special care and stay longer in the hospital. Some may die either at birth or within the first year.

Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals; the worst of these chemicals are nicotine and carbon monoxide. When a women smokes during pregnancy, the toxins gets into their bloodstream. This is her baby’s only source of oxygen and nutrients. A shortage of oxygen can have devastating effects on her baby’s growth and development. Smoking during pregnancy doubles the chances that a baby will be born too early or weigh less than 5 1/2 pounds at birth. Smoking also more than doubles the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth.

Undersize babies tend to have underdeveloped bodies. Their lungs may not be ready to work on their own, which means they may spend their first days or weeks attached to a respirator. After they’re breathing on their own (or even if they did from the start), these babies may have continuing breathing problems — because of delayed lung development or other adverse effects of nicotine. Children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are especially vulnerable to asthma, and have double or even triple the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Not to mention stunting a baby’s growth in the womb can have negative consequences that last a lifetime.

Smoking during pregnancy can have lifelong effects on your baby’s brain. Children of pregnant smokers are especially likely to have a learning disorder, behavioral problems, and relatively low IQs. Recent animal studies suggest that nicotine in the womb can program a baby’s brain for a future addiction.

Cutting Down vs. Quitting? The more cigarettes you smoke per day, the greater chances of developing these health problems. There is no “safe” level of smoking while pregnant. The only way to really protect her baby is to quit. Cutting down is better than doing nothing but it does not eliminate your problems just decreases them a little. A smoker’s body is especially sensitive to the first doses of nicotine each day, and even just a few will significantly tighten blood vessels. A few cigarettes a day are safer than a whole pack, but the difference isn’t as great as you might think.

When to Quit? NOW! If you’re pregnant don’t wait any longer. The best time to quit is when a woman is planning to get pregnant before becoming pregnant or soon after she finds out that she is already pregnant. If she does quit before 16 weeks, her baby will probably weigh the same as the baby of a woman who has never smoked. If she quits within the first three or four months of her pregnancy she can lower her baby’s chance of being born too small and with lots of health problems. Even if a woman quits at the end of her pregnancy, she can help her baby get more oxygen and have a better chance of making it. It’s never too late to quit, but the earlier the better for both the mother and her baby!

How to Quit? Even though you’re aware of the dangers of smoking, it’s not always easy to give up the habit. The pull of nicotine can overwhelm your good intentions.

1 She can ask for help from her doctor for different ways to quit.

2 Make a list of her reasons for wanting to quit, for herself as well as for her baby.

3 Talk to family and friends. Support can make all the difference.

4 Ask people who smoke not to smoke around you.

5 Do not go to places where many people are smoking such as bars or clubs, and smoking sections of restaurants.

6 Set a Quit-Date; the sooner the better. If a woman is not ready to set a date, she can begin to cut down on smoking.

7 She can try the four D’s: Delay, Deep Breathe, Drink Water, and Do Something Else.

8 Keep mints or gum (preferably sugarless) on hand for those times when you get the urge to smoke.

9 Drink less caffeinated beverages; caffeine may stimulate your urge to smoke. Also avoid alcohol, as it may also increase your urge to smoke and can be harmful to your baby.

10 Stay active to keep your mind off smoking and help relieve tension: take a walk, exercise, read a book, or try a new a hobby.

11 Change your habits connected with smoking. If you smoked while driving or when feeling stressed, try other activities to replace smoking.

12 I think the best way for a pregnant woman to quit is to think of her baby being born healthy.

How Does Secondhand Smoke Affect Pregnancy? If you are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke, you increase your and your baby’s risk of developing lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, allergies, asthma, and other health problems.

Babies exposed to secondhand smoke may also develop reduced lung capacity and are at higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Smoking after the Baby is Born. It makes no sense at all for her to go back to smoking! Even after the baby is born, her smoking can hurt the baby.

Babies have very small lungs and airways which get even smaller when they breathe smoke-filled air. Smoking can make it hard for the baby to breathe. It can cause lung problems like bronchitis and pneumonia that could put the baby back in the hospital.

Here we shall explore smoking and look to how it fits into the get pregnant tips category. Many experts now agree that a significant number of babies whose Mothers smoked before and/or during pregnancy were born with smaller than normal airways. This could make them more vulnerable to breathing problems after birth.  These potential breathing problems could put the baby at increased risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Smoking has been linked to many and various health problems in new born babies, including premature arrival and low birth weight.  Mothers who smoke immediately before and during their pregnancy are at an increased risk of having a stillbirth, miscarriage or premature baby.  Smoking while pregnant, in particular, will lower the amount of oxygen available to you and your growing baby and increase your baby’s heart rate. These health factors also contribute to raising the SIDS risk for such babies, and in the child’s case decreased ability to breathe adequately or take in enough oxygen for a restful, restorative night’s sleep, which is an essential part of the baby development process.

Babies born to mothers who have smoked immediately before they conceived or during pregnancy are significantly lighter and shorter than those born to Mothers who have not smoked at all.  Children who are exposed to tobacco smoke before birth or in the home are far more likely to suffer from a number of respiratory illnesses and infections, which can also contribute to a decrease in quality of life for the baby.    The more cigarettes the Mother smokes per day, the greater is the baby’s chances of developing these and other health problems.  Studies have shown that a baby’s risk of SIDS rises with each additional smoker in the household, with the number of cigarettes smoked each day, and with the length of exposure to cigarette smoke.  This in itself is an alarming fact.

So give your baby and yourself the best possible chance by not smoking before you conceive, during pregnancy and when you return home from hospital.  Your baby will thank you for these get pregnant tips and you will sleep better knowing your baby’s risk for SIDS is greatly diminished.

Smoking During Pregnancy: Risks to the Pregnancy and Harm to the Baby

Smoking During Pregnancy: Risks to the Pregnancy and Harm to the Baby

Smoking during pregnancy is one of the worst things you can do. When you smoke, your baby smokes too. There about 600 ingredients in cigarettes, and when a cigarette is burned, it releases over 4,000 chemicals. Many of these are poisons, and at least 50 of these chemicals cause cancer. So when you take a puff, your growing baby gets exposed to these harmful pollutants too. Because your baby is developing inside you, exposure to these pollutants can be very detrimental to his overall health and the safety of your pregnancy.

The nicotine and tar in your cigarette decreases the level of oxygen and nutrients that your baby receives. This can slow down your baby’s growth and development, and it puts you at risk for miscarriage and stillbirths (a baby with no heartbeat).

Luckily, if you quit smoking immediately, your baby’s growth will return to normal shortly.

Smoking during pregnancy has been associated with 5 percent of infant deaths, 10 percent of preterm births, and 30 percent in low birth weight babies. Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke can also increase:

Infertility—When compared to women who don’t smoke, smokers have a 30 percent increased risk of being infertile. They also experience a delay in conception—i.e. it’s harder to get pregnant when you smoke. Placental Abruption—A serious and dangerous complication that can occur during the third trimester of pregnancy. It occurs when your placenta separates from your uterine lining. Placental abruption can cause vaginal bleeding, resulting in fetal distress, uterine tenderness, and increased frequency of contractions. Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PRROM)—Your water breaks early, before the onset of real labor. Placenta Previa—Your placenta grows in the lowest part of the uterus, which can cause problems for the baby. You may bleed and require prompt care. Some women are even hospitalized.

It is estimated that over 20 percent of American women in their childbearing years smoke cigarettes, despite knowing its harmful effects. In 2005, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey reported that 14 percent of women smoke during pregnancy.

Babies who are born to women who smoked during pregnancy are also at an increased risk of having a cleft lip or cleft palate. A cleft palate occurs when there is a split in the baby’s lip and the roof of his/her mouth, creating a hole between the nose and mouth. Surgery is often used to reconstruct that part of the baby’s face.

The danger of smoke doesn’t end when your baby is born. Being around smoke can also put your newborn baby at risk.

When exposed to secondhand smoke, babies have an increased risk of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). As they grow, your child is at an increased risk of developing asthma, respiratory problems, ear infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis.

Because the babies of smokers tend to be premature and have low birth weights, they are also at an increased risk of serious lifelong health problems, such as mental retardation, learning problems, and cerebral palsy.  These babies are also more likely to have birth defects, including congenital heart defects.

The more you smoke during pregnancy, the more harm it will do to your baby. It is very important to try to quit smoking. Even if you can’t kick the habit completely, try to limit your daily cigarette intake.

Make an appointment to talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about your desire to quit smoking. They can refer you to a smoking cessation program and offer other ways to help you quit.

Remember to surround yourself in a positive environment. You are more likely to succeed if you have the support of friends and family who understand the harmful effects of smoking.
