The holistic benefit Yoga offers your quit smoking mission is immense – not to mention the wealth of benefits you gain to your health in countless other ways. There are many resources for Yoga online and even through your cable or satellite provider! For now, though, here are a few common stretches that will get your blood flowing and start your body in a positive direction toward a holistic recovery from smoking cigarettes to feed your nicotine addiction.

Downward Facing Dog

Downward facing dog is the most basic position in Yoga. It is one of the most common starting positions, and it acts as a maneuvering position between a lot of other stretches and exercises. To perform a downward dog pose, you will start with your legs about shoulder width apart. Lean forward, bending at the waist and bending slightly at the knees if necessary. If this is the first time you are doing this pose, you may only be able to touch your fingertips to the floor while stretching time up outward, elongating your back. Try not to perform a type of dangling stretch in which you touch your toes, as this is quite different. Instead, imagine you are making a triangle with your body and the floor. A long-term goal is to be able to have your palms flat on the ground and your heals touching down completely. Breath deep and hold the pose for 15-30 seconds then begin to crawl forward for…

Low Cobra

From downward facing dog, bring your upper body closer to the floor, lowering the rest of your body in succession like a snake – not quite to the floor, though, just parallel to it. When your body is fully extended, the only parts touching the ground should be your flat palms and your toes. Your body should be strait and close to the floor; your hand should be directly underneath your shoulders and your arms bent. Keeping your low to the ground pose, raise your head and gaze forward as you hold and breath. After 15-30 seconds, and push up to go into… 

High Cobra

As you straiten out your arms and arch your back, drop your torso to the ground, extend your toes outward, and square your shoulders back as you take a deep breath. Take advantage of this deep stretch, pushing steadily down on your palms. Hold for 15-30 seconds then shift your weight to your knees, dragging your hands in front of you.

You could sit on your knees with your buttock cradled by your feet for a few moments of silent meditation or you could extend your arms out in front of you in a similar seated position but with your forehead to the floor. This is known as child’s pose. Sit quietly for a few moments, concentrating heavily on your breath.

During this time of meditation, try to visualize your disease as something very manageable like a box containing all the lies of your addiction: You need to smoke, you can’t afford to feel that way, you need a release from stress through nicotine, etc. Visualize your self defeating thoughts all becoming scrolls and being placed one by one in the box where they will be sealed away – far from you and no longer associated with your way of thinking.

There many more holistic methods to stop smoking and recover from other ailments, as well, that can’t possibly be covered in one article. If you are toying with the idea of replacing your addiction with a holistic approach to not only quit smoking, but to life in general, just think about all the attention and valuable time you wasted on keeping your nicotine addiction alive. You can fight your nicotine addiction! You CAN stop smoking! You’ve been thinking about your tobacco addiction for years, months, weeks, days, and possibly on an hourly or even minute by minute basis.
