It has been more than 4 decades ago since smoking was proven to cause lung cancer and other serious diseases. Almost at the same time, the negative perception that second hand smoke can cause serious disease and premature death in both adults and children have been confirmed. Thanks to the report of the United States Surgeon General entitled “The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke,” it has strengthened our view on the ill effects of cigarettes to people who smoke as well as to those who do not smoke.
The report came up with major conclusions on the health risks of second hand smoke, such as:
Second hand smoke is a proven cause of lung cancer and heart disease in non-smoking adults and of sudden infant death syndrome, low birth weight, acute respiratory infections, ear infections and asthma attacks in infants and children. It is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths in the United States of America each year.
There is no risk-free level of exposure to second hand smoke.
Exposure to second hand smoke has substantial and immediate adverse effects on cardiovascular and respiratory health.
Second hand smoke contains more than 50 carcinogens
Comprehensive smoke-free workplace policies are the only effective way to protect non-smokers from second hand smoke. Other approaches, such as air ventilation systems, and smoking and non-smoking sections of rooms, are not effective and do not not eliminate exposure.
Their conclusion is that it is about time that a comprehensive smoke-free law is enacted that will be applied to all workplaces and public places. The report also reaches another very important statement:  “Evidence from peer-reviewed studies shows that smoke-free policies and regulations do not have an adverse economic impact on the hospitality industry.”
With this report, all arguments and excuses not to take action are eliminated. Many research and hard economic data have revealed that smoke-free laws do not harm sales or employment in restaurants and bars. In fact, they sometimes have positive feedbacks, such as what happened in New York City after the law has taken effect, business receipts for bars and restaurants increased, their  job employment rose, and the number of liquor licenses increased. This happened despite the fact that most establishments complied with the law, and the great majority of New Yorkers supported the law.
Another positive outcome is that smoke-free laws resulted in money savings. According to statistics from the Society of Actuaries in the United States, second hand smoke resulted US$ 10 billion a year in health care bills, lost wages, and costs.
All over the world, there is a concerted effort from different government agencies to enact laws due mainly to the overwhelming evidence that smoke-free laws protect the health of the general public without harming the business sector. Even the corporate world have joined the bandwagon by maintaining smoke-free workplaces and providing a specified area for smoking. Some countries, states, provinces, territories, and districts have adopted full smoking bans inside restaurants and bars.
Passive smoking is a major but preventable cause of death. Since smoking hurts more people than just smokers, smoke-free laws need to be upheld at all times to protect everyone’s right to breathe clean air.

New Year’s Eve has come and gone but many of us are still struggling to keep those resolutions. For some it’s to lose those last 5 or 10 lbs., but for others, it’s to finally quit the pack a day or social smoking habit and live a smoke-free life.

We all know that smoking is expensive and extremely habit forming, but yet, there are so many of us that just can’t put that last cigarette out, get off the couch and out of the apartment into some fresh air. In addition to feeling better and adding years back on to one’s life, here are some of the additional benefits to living a smoke-free life.

Living Clean

Have you noticed that your apartment walls have been looking a little yellow? That’s not time, that’s smoking. Years of smoking in your house can discolor your walls, embed stale odors into your furniture and make your living space smell less appealing. A smoke free lifestyle will greatly improve your living situation and make it easier to sleep at night. It will also create a more eco-friendly lifestyle, by removing toxic smoke from the air, making it easier to breathe for both you, your family and if you live in a pet-friendly apartment, your family pet!

Breathe in, Breathe Out

Did you know that within 20 minutes of stopping smoking your blood pressure, pulse rate and body temperature return to normal and within 8 hours your carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal? Ever have that wheezing, out of breath feeling after walking up the steps to your office or apartment? Within two months of quitting your circulation and lung functions improve. Your lungs become cleaner and reduce infection and coughing and fatigue improve.

Saving Your Future Self

When you choose to live a smoke-free lifestyle, not only will you be helping the world out by removing toxic fumes from the environment, you’ll also be saving yourself a lot of trouble down the road. Within two months of living a smoke free lifestyle, two months your circulation and lung functions improve. Lungs become cleaner and reduce infection and coughing and fatigue improve. After one year your chance of having a heart attack is reduced in half and after five to 15 years your risk of stroke is reduced to that of a non-smoker.

It’s never too late to make a fresh start and toss the pack! Your body, your family and your friends with thank you for it!

While the debate over marijuana, legality, health benefits and negatives rages on there are many people who are in strife who care little for all these arguments because they are addicted to weed and what the masses decided about the drug matters little when your own personal life is falling apart due to addiction which is a separate point completely to all the others. If you are one of these people and are looking for tips on how to quit smoking weed then first I encourage you to shut out all of the pro and anti marijuana campaigners because your struggle is a personal one not just with marijuana but with a psychological addiction which only has tenuous links to the particular thing you are addicted to.

This does not mean that there are not specific things you need to know about marijuana in this but it all must center around your personal struggle and not all the side bullshit that goes on to do with pot. To quickly summarize what you may need to know about cannabis is this:

Marijuana is not physically addictive like other drugs that have chemicals in them that you can become dependant on, while you can suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, vivid dreams, irritability, mild nausea and so forth by scientific measures pot is not a drug you can be physically dependant on. Addiction is a mental disease that makes you believe you need something whether it be a drug or a behavior like gambling or sex. With Marijuana the mixed messages about the drug confuse people on what is addiction and what is dependence, if you are struggling to quit smoking weed you are addicted. To confuse matters more many people who are dependant on a drug like heroin are also psychologically addicted in a double whammy that is terrible. This leads to a perception that pot is the same when it should be treated quite differently.

What this boils down to is that you CAN quit smoking weed but only if you treat this as a personal addiction that you can overcome by changing yourself and not blaming the drug first and foremost. This is not to lessen the deep pain, anxiety and helplessness that may come from living with an addiction at all nor is it to trivialize the task of climbing out of this pit of despair either as the demons of the mind are the cruelest and most punishing of all. These tips on how to quit smoking weed are just a way to set a framework you can use to realign the way you think which aids in the all important aspect of willpower which is the only real way to move beyond an addictive habit.

Quitting Smoking Pot is a Choice

Sounds obvious doesn’t it? However by choice what I mean is a carefully considered choice, a choice based on the knowledge of the benefits of quitting weed and the negatives of continuing to smoking pot. This is not a whim, a quickly drawn line in the sand or a spontaneous vow based on anger or fear or a whole host of emotions that have led to your initial acceptance that smoking marijuana is becoming hurtful to you. Choice is saying “I choose not to smoke pot” rather than saying “I love pot but I need to quit”. This may sound like a whole lot of useless semantics to many however it is a proven psychological technique that the WAY we say things and the WAY we think of things effects the outcomes because language dictates more than a simple meaning but a whole host of other desires, excuses, fears and connotations when structured poorly. So make a choice to quit smoking weed and make it an informed choice.

Action Vs Reaction

The writer Rita Mae Brown once said “A life of reaction is a life of slavery, intellectually and spiritually. One must fight for a life of action, not reaction.” and this should be a quote written down and emblazoned in your memory because this is not only good advice for life but also in the case of addiction. How often do you take action to smoke a bowl compared to as a reaction? How often is the ritual of smoking pot coming from a reaction to something: A bad day, a fight with your partner, an inconsolable sadness or rage. How often does it come from a seeming NEED to get high and zone out, a compulsion brought on my troubles or by habit compared to perhaps what it was like early on when it was exciting and fun. Those that tally up way more on the reaction scale may find the reason behind the need for their addiction from the troubles that beset them and realize that the drug is just an escape and the problems behind it are what really needs to be solved. Some may find it easier to work on the reason behind the need first and others may take heart that a deeper understanding of your personal demons can give you the strength to quit smoking weed which will allow you to face those challenges with a clearer head and more success. This is action, control of your own life rather than a reaction to compulsion and external influences which is reaction and as the quote said makes you a slave to it and to marijuana in turn.

Plan

As you may have guessed I am a fan of the written word and the practical application of words on paper may be paramount here. The choice to actively seek a solution to your problems and a change in your life to quit smoking pot will propel you forward but how to do this comes down to planning, goals and motivation. The catch 22 of this is that when you are an addict sticking with a plan and keeping motivation and goals can be difficult and a single bad day can feel mix up all of this in your head and suddenly a single smoke does not seem so evil, then another and suddenly a week has gone before you realize it and the self loathing sets in. STOP! That is the direction you do not want to take and you know it! This is where ink can be a help if not your salvation because a psychological addiction is something in your mind, if you keep all your plans in your mind it is bounds to be influences by the negative thoughts that will plague you so why would you want the pure and good new ideas being corrupted there. My advice is to write things down, write down all the bad things about smoking pot, write down all the good things that will come from being weed free, write down you plan of attack whether it be quitting cold turkey or gradually limiting your smoking down to none at all. Write it down and keep it because those words do not change no matter how much your demands mess with your mind your pledge taken at your most insightful and enlightened point will always be there to set you back on the track you know you want to be on.

Persistence Outweighs Performance

Some people may have an easy time when quitting a marijuana habit but others may not, there are so many variables in this mix it is impossible to predict but there is one truth to it and that is that the end outcome of being free of your addiction is worth more than any failures you have along the way. Most people who try to quit any addictive behavior do not do so on their first try, nor their second and many more beyond that often. This is disheartening and depressing but it does not need to be if you do not want it to be. Every time you fall, every time you give in, every time you blunder on your goal to giving up weed you learn something new about yourself and about the world and each of those experiences is ammunition for the next fight. Victory goes to those who persist and learn and adapt and survive so when you call your performance on quitting into question remember it is not how easy it is, it is if you make it in the end and if you maintain the drive despite the pitfalls that will ensure your success.

Why Disaster Awaits Single Drinkers

While it might seem obvious that alcoholism presents a grave danger in one’s life, many people may easily overlook the fact that a casual or social drinker can easily become alcohol dependent in difficult times, such as a divorce. While the claims for many genetic based mental disorders have yet to be proven, it is clear that we can notice someone who is effectively a social drinker in the early years of

Working And Living In A Smoke-Free Environment

Working And Living In A Smoke-Free Environment

People who complain of second hand smoke have some reasons to cheer about; one among them is the imposition of smoking ban in public places. Some business opines positively regarding the ban while others complain that their businesses had to bear some losses due to a fall in the number of patrons. Employees working in a smoke filled environment and who used to complain about the low quality of the air inside have been made dumb with the argument that no one forced these people to work there. In fact, there are a number of other ‘smoke-free’ careers out there for them to choose.

After the implementation of the ban, a new breed of healthier restaurants and bars has come into the picture. Now, an employee will not reek of tobacco smoke! Many a people are happy because their favourite restaurants and nightspots have been transformed into healthy places of hang-out so that they can spend a few hours with their family and small children. In fact, some business owners claim that there has been an increase in the number of patrons since the ban on smoking came into effect. This is a positive aspect which indicates that all those non-smoker people who otherwise were used to staying at home have good reasons to go out and enjoy themselves in a smoke free environment. Children are the ones that are at a higher risk of developing diseases of the lungs caused by the smoke emanating from tobacco cigarettes.

The smoke-free restaurants and other such public places are much better, in terms of health, for their young customers. There has been a high demand for memberships in private clubs that do not allow smoking in the premises. Some organizations and clubs that used to have very few memberships are now teeming with new members. But, for many of the clubs where a ban on smoking exists, the inflow of income has ebbed. This has resulted in them being forced to stop giving donations to charitable institutions; and sadly, some of these shops have closed down completely due to a fall in the number of patrons.

In some states and regions, the ban has resulted in renewed efforts to stay away from or to quit smoking for one’s own good. But, ironically, on the other side, one can see that some areas have actually witnessed an increase in smoking population, particularly among working class men, once the ban came into force. Preventing smokers from smoking in public places should practically help in the fight to quit this dangerous and addictive habit. This can be said with great conviction when one considers the way nicotine re-wires one’s brain. As more and more nicotine enters the human body, more and more nicotine receptors will develop in the brain in an effort to absorb the chemicals. And, being in a place where people smoke without any restraint, or seeing someone else smoke are a few factors that can impel the receptors to induce a craving for nicotine.
