How Does Socializing Affect People Who Are Quitting Smoking?

As I was quitting smoking, I found it extremely hard to be in social situations where my friends were smoking. The urge to smoke was unbearable, but it doesn’t have to be.

The problem with people who smoke socially is that they want everybody else around them to smoke. Even when I was coming to the end of my time as a smoker and realized how bad it was for your body, I still didn’t want to smoke alone. It’s something bizarre about the way that smoking works.

It’s hard to be around your friends while they smoke because they have branded you as a smoker. It’s subconscious, just like the actual urge to smoke. It will take a while after you stop smoking for your friends to break their connection between you and smoking, but it will happen.

How hard it is to be around smokers while quitting also depends on your method of quitting. With nicotine replacement therapy, it was impossible to be around smokers without wanting to take the patch off and start chain smoking. However, if you choose a method that actually stops your mental urge to smoke, it becomes a lot easier to be around smokers without wanting to smoke.

Quitting smoking is one of those things that is made hard mostly because everybody has always said that it’s hard, so if you don’t manage to quit smoking it’s more understandable. This is part of the whole evil of smoking that is so hard to escape, but when things are at their worst and you find yourself screaming inside for a cigarette, just remember how good you will feel the next day having known that you didn’t give in to smoking once again.

google_language = “en”;

Smokers are either full-time full-pack-smokers or part-time social-smokers. If the social-smokers don’t find smoking attractive enough usually, why does it seem lucrative enough during drinking?
The answer is the numbness achieved by drinking is enhanced by the passage of smoke through the respiratory system. Smoking with all its evils also gives the pleasures of enhanced blood circulation, which combines with other aspects of drinking to enhance mood. Mostly though, people and especially the social-smokers, smoke to nullify the taste of alcohol so they can take the next sip with a sort-of neutral tasting mouth. You may compare it with people using ash to wash their hands. In this case the ash stays on the cigarette but the smoke acts like a caressing and soothing agent. Besides people who have unfortunate lung capacity or other allergies may usually have trouble smoking but are freely able to enjoy the pleasures of many stamina-sticks without any problems under the influence of alcohol.
Another important aspect is peer-pressure. When all your buddies bought something, you had to too. Now when all your fellow-drinkers light up a cigarette, it seems stupid that you don’t. Besides drinking is all about the social experience and the interaction and people who smoke generally interact and socialize a lot more than non-smokers with the smokers. Now legislations have become even tighter and smoking is banned in pubs and public spaces in most parts of the world. That adds a big divide between the sensible and the foolish ones. So if you are a non-smoker competing at work with a smoker-colleague and you go to a bar with your boss and he lights up, and both of them take a little break outside and are able to interact more. You’d think your chances at the job would better off with being a smoker wouldn’t you?
Believe it or not, it becomes such a well-rehearsed habit that a person begins to count time with the number of smokes lit. So the ‘usual’ at the bar may mean two large on-the-rocks and an average of 4 cigarettes in a span of 40 minutes. The fifth cigarette will immediately trigger a leave-bar response to the smoker as he will realize he has been there for the usual amount of time.
Cigarettes and alcohol, each evil worse than the other, are perfect bar-buddies in fact. Both complement each other. You like cigarettes better after being tipsy and you like your drink better with a large order of smoke on the side.
There’s no more scientific-proof or any such for this universal fact. In fact it’s not just the modern bar-enthusiasts that smoke and drink together, ancient civilizations in various parts of the world have shown traditions of smoking and drinking during celebrations. Smoking just enhances the pleasure and high one feels from drinking alcohol. Maybe in future this could change with the anti-smoking laws in bars and pubs. People might finally get over smoking with drinks and may stick to coffee and cigarettes.

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) embarked on a major 50 state anti-smoking effort (www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/04/22/cdc.smoking.report/index.html).  The thrust of the program is to enhance public education and to develop a national anti-smoking policy.  Simply stated, the goal is to reduce the death count (and related illnesses) from smoking in the United States.  Currently some 444,000 people die annually from direct and indirect tobacco diseases.

Men still dominate the statistics with about 270,000 fatalities per year (averaged between 2000 and 2004); female deaths totaled 174,000 during the same period.

This means that during an average 10-year period, nearly 4.5 million people in the U.S. alone will die prematurely due to the use of cigarettes.

Results globally are equally staggering.  According to a study led by researchers at the University of Queensland and the Harvard School of Public Health, around 5 million people died from smoking-related causes in 2000.  Men were even more likely than women to succumb to smoking-related diseases.  In developing countries, for example, more than 80 percent of deaths were among men.

While these numbers are impressive, consider adjusting them to an hourly time frame.  Using an average of 365.25 days per year (incorporating leap years), an average year has 8766 hours.  This means that almost 51 people die due to smoking every hour in the U.S.  That’s about one person every minute.

Globally, the smoking-related death toll is around 570 people per hour or almost 10 people per minute.

Smoking does more than kill, however.  Statistics amassed by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and others show that smoking brings along many other negatives (e.g., reduced quality of life, shortened life spans, loss of productivity, increased sick days, greater risk of heart and lung disease and increased risks associated with pregnancy and childhood illnesses).

In fact, in 2000, the CDC estimates that about 8.6 million people were suffering from at least one chronic disease due to current or former smoking.  Many of these people were actually suffering from more than one smoking-related condition – chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

Thus, the efforts to curtail smoking are based on a solid health footing.

But, the CDC anti-smoking effort provides other insight into smoking across the U.S.  Using a “smoking prevalence” index (the percentage of people in each state who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and currently smoke regularly), the CDC found that the region from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi-Alabama Gulf Coast and from the Appalachians to the Mississippi River fared the worst.  West Virginia topped the scales at 26.5 percent.  But, Indiana (26 percent), Kentucky (25.2 percent), Missouri (25 percent) and Oklahoma (24.7 percent) led the Nation.  Utah (9.3 percent) and California (14 percent) had the lowest smoking incidence.

Many of the lowest smoking states used one or more of the stop/prevent smoking strategies that the CDC has outlined in the past.  These include increasing the price of tobacco products, enacting and enforcing smoke-free laws, curtailing tobacco advertising and promotion, enacting anti-smoking media campaigns, limiting access to tobacco products and encouraging and offering assistance to smokers to quit.

Further testimony to reducing cigarette use is linked to groups that promote nonsmoking as part of their religion.  Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists have much lower rates of lung and other smoking-related cancers than most other groups

Quitting pays generous dividends, too.  The CDC notes that the risk of developing most smoking illnesses lowers the longer one quits and younger one is when they do quit.  In fact, people who stop smoking at younger ages gain the greatest benefits.  Quitting by age 35 eliminates 90% of the risk due to tobacco use. Still, as the CDC notes, “The argument that ‘it is too late to quit smoking because the damage is already done,’ is not true.”

The message is clear – smoking is hazardous to your life; quitting (or never starting) is better for you, your loved ones, your friends and your co-workers.

Information on Lung Cancer

When you breathe in, air passes from your nose or mouth through the windpipe (trachea), which divides into two tubes (airways), one going to each lung. These are known as the right and left bronchus and they divide to form smaller tubes called bronchioles, which carry air through the lungs.

Be One of the World’s Most Practical Smokers

Have you heard about electronic cigarettes? They are “cigarettes” powered by a battery pack and are rechargeable. It has a cartridge with an atomizing chamber that houses the liquid nicotine solution. When the cartridge is fastened to the battery, the solution is heated and turning it into vapor. The moment you inhale the vapor, an ember-like indicator light is lit at the tip of the cigarette mimicking that of a real tobacco cigarette.

Cigarette smoking as well as exposure to second hand tobacco smoke has association with premature death caused due to chronic diseases such as different kinds of cancer, heart diseases and lung diseases. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, smoking is the leading cause of about 80 percent of lung cancer deaths in males and almost 70 percent of deaths in females. The risk of dying of lung cancer is almost 26 times higher among the male of the species that smoke cigarettes. Among women that smoke tobacco cigarettes compared with those who never smoked is about 15 times higher. Apart from that, smoking leads to many diseases including cancers of the bladder, oral cavity, kidney, lung, pancreas, and stomach. It is also the leading causative factor of acute myeloid leukaemia. Also, exposure to cigarette smoke during one’s childhood days makes one prone to respiratory infections, ear infections, and asthma.

According to some of the recent study reports, every year, almost half a million Americans die of diseases related to cigarette smoking. Heart disease is one of the leading reasons for deaths in the United States. Cigarette smokers are four times more likely to contract coronary heart disease when compared to nonsmokers, and smoking doubles a person’s risk of suffering from stroke related illnesses. In addition to that, about 90 percent of all deaths due to chronic obstructive lung diseases can be attributed to cigarette smoking and use of tobacco products. Cigarette smoking has many adverse effects on the reproductive health area. Other bad effects include an increased risk of infertility, pre-term delivery, stillbirths, low birth weight of the infant and the much feared sudden infant death syndrome.

Regardless of the knowledge related to the harmful effects generated by cigarette smoke, cigarettes and other tobacco products account for more than 60 percent of the expenditures on all such products in our country. This point to the fact that even though research studies have provided evidence that cigarette smoke unleash detrimental effects on the smoker’s health, many smokers do not take it seriously. People that want their children to grow up in a healthy and smoke-free environment need to take matters into their own hands. Steps must be taken to decrease the level of cigarette smoke exposure faced by children.

Treat your household as a tobacco-smoke-free zone. If you need to smoke, do so only outside your house. Wear a smoke coat that you must take off before returning inside. Set an example by dining with your child in restaurants that are labelled smoke-free restaurants. Ask your friends and relatives not to smoke in the proximity of your child. Be insistent so that you make your voice heard. Talk to your school going or adolescent children about the bad effects of cigarette smoke and the health consequences. Be honest with them, especially if you happen to be a smoker, and talk about it very often. Take a decision not to smoke; quitting the habit of smoking is not easy, but it is really possible.

Dangers Abound From Cigar Smoke

Nicotine, the substance contained in tobacco causes addiction, and most of the cigars have as much amounts of nicotine as that contained in a few cigarettes combined together. When cigar smokers take in cigar smoke, nicotine gets absorbed very rapidly from cigarettes. For those who do not directly inhale the smoke, it still gets absorbed; but only more slowly, through the lining surrounding the inside of the mouth.

Health Consequences Of Tobacco Smoke In People

Health Consequences Of Tobacco Smoke In People
