Nutrients you will need

Before You Become Pregnant
The best time to begin eating a healthy diet is before you become pregnant. This will help you and your baby start out with the nutrients you both need.
If you are planning to become pregnant, visit your doctor. Getting good health care before you are pregnant will help you throughout your pregnancy. As part of your visit, you will be asked about your family life, work, and lifestyle, including your diet. You and your doctor will discuss how to eat right before and during your pregnancy and which nutrients are especially important, such as folic acid.

A Healthy Diet
The first step toward healthy eating is to look at the foods in your daily diet. Early in pregnancy, morning sickness can affect your eating habits. You may crave certain foods or not feel like eating. If this happens, you still should try to eat a variety of foods each day to help ensure you are getting the right amount of nutrients.
Having healthy snacks that you can eat during the day is a good way to get the nutrients and extra calories you need. You may find it easier to eat snacks and small meals throughout the day rather than three big meals a day. This also may help you avoid nausea and heartburn.

Healthy eating also means avoiding things that may be harmful. This includes alcohol (beer, wine, or mixed drinks) and illegal drugs, which may cause birth defects and other problems for the baby. Smoking cigarettes is especially harmful to a pregnant woman and her baby.

You also may want to avoid or limit your caffeine intake during pregnancy. Although some studies suggest drinking three or more cups of coffee per day may increase the risk of miscarriage, there is no proof that caffeine causes miscarriage.

Meal Planning
Planning meals in advance can help ensure you and your family eat a balanced diet. The food pyramid developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture can help you choose what to eat. It takes into account your age, sex, and your amount of daily physical activity and shows the number of servings you should have each day from each of the six food groups:

Grains
Vegetables
Fruit
Oils
Milk
Meat and beans
Basic Nutrients

Every diet should include proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. To be sure your diet provides you with the right amount of nutrients, you should know which foods are good sources of each.
The RDA—recommended daily allowance—on food labels shows the levels of nutrients you need every day. During pregnancy, the RDAs are higher for most nutrients. Table 2 shows the key nutrients you and your baby will need during your pregnancy.

Extra Nutrients
Pregnant women need extra iron and folic acid, and these are usually prescribed in pill form as supplements. Sometimes a prenatal supplement that contains these two nutrients plus vitamins and minerals is recommended. Ask your doctor or nurse how your needs can be best met.
Women should take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, in addition to a well balanced diet, for at least 1 month before pregnancy and during the first 3 months of pregnancy. This can help prevent neural tube defects, which affect the spine and skull of the fetus.

Women who have had a child with a neural tube defect are more likely to have another child with this problem. These women need much higher doses of folic acid—4 milligrams daily. It should be taken for at least 1 month before pregnancy and during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Women who need 4 milligrams should take folic acid as a separate supplement, not as part of a multivitamin.
Check with your doctor before taking any vitamins, herbs, or other supplements that are not prescribed for you. They might be harmful during pregnancy. Just because a product is natural does not mean it is safe to use during pregnancy.

Weight Gain
When you are pregnant, you need to eat more to help the growth and development of your baby, as well as for the changes in your own body that promote a healthy pregnancy. During at least the last 6 months of pregnancy, you need to eat or drink about 100 more calories per day than you did before you were pregnant.
How much weight you gain during pregnancy depends on your weight before pregnancy (see box). A healthy gain for most women is between 25 and 35 pounds. If you are overweight, you should gain less, but some weight gain is normal. If you are underweight, you should gain more. Talk with your doctor about the amount of weight you can expect to gain. This may vary if you are pregnant with more than one baby.

Special Concerns
Vegetarian Diets
If you are a vegetarian, you can continue your diet during your pregnancy. However, you will need to plan your meals with care to ensure you get the nutrients you and your baby need. Be sure you are getting enough protein and that it is the correct type. You will probably need to take supplements, especially iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D.
Lactose Intolerance
Milk and other dairy products are the best sources of calcium in your diet. Some women have symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, gas, and indigestion after drinking milk or eating dairy products. This is known as lactose intolerance.
During pregnancy, these symptoms often improve. But if you still have problems after eating or drinking dairy products, talk with your doctor or dietitian. He or she may prescribe calcium supplements if you cannot get enough calcium from other foods. Calcium also can be found in cheese, yogurt, sardines, certain types of salmon, spinach, and fortified orange juice.

Mercury
Fish and shellfish are good sources of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients. However, pregnant women should not eat certain kinds of fish because they contain high levels of a form of mercury that can be harmful to the developing fetus.
You should avoid eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish during pregnancy. These large fish contain high levels of mercury. Albacore tuna also is high in mercury so you may want to choose canned chunk light tuna instead. Other types of fish are fine in limited amounts. You can eat up to 12 ounces (about two meals) of other varied fish and shellfish per week.
Check local advisories about fish caught in local rivers and streams. If there is no advice about them, it may be safe to eat up to 6 ounces (one meal) per week of fish from local waters. During that week, do not eat any other fish.

Listeriosis
Listeriosis is an illness caused by bacteria that can occur in unpasteurized milk and soft cheese and prepared and uncooked meats, poultry, and shellfish. It can be particularly harmful to pregnant women and their babies.
Symptoms occur several weeks after you eat the food. They can include fevers, chills, muscle aches, and back pain. In some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. When a pregnant woman is infected, the disease can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
Because the symptoms of listeriosis are like the flu, it can be difficult to diagnose. If you have a fever or flu-like illness, check with your doctor who may take samples from your vagina, cervix, and blood to be checked. If the bacteria are found, you and your baby can be treated with antibiotics. If there is a chance that a newborn is infected, he or she also can be tested and treated.
To prevent listeriosis, wash all fresh fruits and vegetables before using them. While you are pregnant, do not eat:

Unpasteurized milk or soft cheeses

Raw or undercooked meat, poultry, shellfish

Prepared meats, such as hot dogs or deli meats, unless they are reheated until steaming hot

Always be sure to wash your hands and any utensils, countertops, or cutting boards that have been in contact with uncooked meats.

During pregnancy, some women feel strong urges to eat non-food items such as clay, ice, laundry starch, or cornstarch. This is called pica. Pica can be harmful to your pregnancy. It can affect your intake of nutrients and can lead to constipation and anemia. Talk with your doctor if you have any of these urges. He or she may be able to suggest other things you can do when you feel the urge to eat non-food items.
Finally…
Eating right during your pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your baby. Take a look at the foods in your daily diet. Make sure they provide the nutrients you and your baby need. It is never too late to start eating a healthy diet.

Minimizing Pregnancy Risk with a Healthy Lifestyle

It’s every couple’s dream to start building a family of their own by having a healthy baby.  Pregnancy appears to be a natural expectation from any healthy couple but in a world where lifestyles are always on the go, planning is necessary to make sure that everything goes well.
Being a party animal, getting by on a little sleep, too much alcohol and cigars – all these will have to take a back seat in order to accommodate the beginning of a new life.
Several months prior to conception, both the man and the woman should make sure they are practicing a healthy lifestyle to keep their body in a good condition.  This can help minimize risk factors that can hurt the baby or the future parents.
Sometimes, it only takes a healthy lifestyle change to boost the chances of pregnancy especially those who are having problems with infertility and other medical conditions.
The first two to four weeks of pregnancy is very critical.  During this time, a tiny placenta and embryo are already attached to the uterine wall.  The baby’s development can be greatly affected by the following health and lifestyle issues:
·    Serious birth defect called spina bifida is a condition characterized by a baby born with a spine that is not closed.   To help prevent this condition, many food items, such as bread, bagels and breakfast cereal, are fortified with folic acid which is effective in reducing the risk of this birth defect.
·    Alcohol is associated to premature delivery, mental retardation, birth defects and low-birth-weight babies.
·    Smoking can cause conception difficulties and may increase the risk of preterm labor and low birth weight.
·    Pregnant women should consult their physicians before taking any over-the-counter and prescription drugs due to the health risk it may cause to the unborn. Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, aspirin compounds and ibuprofen can cause a decrease in the amount of amniotic fluid and cause closure of the ductus arteriosa, an important blood vessel in the baby.
·    Cocaine use is detrimental and life-threatening to both mother and baby.
·    Pregnant women who have periodontal infections and gum disease can increase the risk of pre-term delivery up to eightfold.  Babies born to mothers with these infections are twice as likely to be admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit, and three times more likely to need hospitalization beyond seven days.
According to Michael Greene, MD, Director of Obstetrics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, obesity is an especially critical issue for women of childbearing age.  “Obesity is associated with many complications, because it greatly increases a woman’s risk of developing high blood sugar and diabetes-either before they get pregnant or during their pregnancy,” adds Greene.
The unborn is placed at high risk for a variety of congenital malformations, including defects of the brain and spinal cord brought about by the mother’s obesity and diabetes.  The babies are likely to grow large in size making it difficult to have normal delivery and may require ceasarean section.
Depression can also affect pregnancy.  Women who get depressed when during pregnancy tend to smoke, drink alcohol or use illegal drugs which are harmful to the baby.  Difficulty bonding with the baby and postpartum depression may also occur which is usual in women with a history of depressive illness.  The cortisol hormone that the body releases during times of stress seems to make conception more difficult.  However, exercise and getting plenty of sleep can help reduce stress.
Women are adviced to see either a doctor or midwife at least 3 months before getting pregnant for pre-conception counseling.  This will help women learn about what steps to take to ensure a healthy pregnancy.  Keeping a healthy lifestyle over the years can translate into a healthy pregnancy especially when it’s past the prime of fertility years.

google_ad_channel = AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = “en”;

Anything that you expose your to, whether it is the foods you eat or pollutants such as cigarette smoke, can affect your body and potentially, your unborn baby. It is especially important before conception and around the time of conception to be aware of how things in your everyday life may affect your chances of becoming pregnant and the heath of your baby.

In many cases scientists have not adequately studied the effects of environmental factors on human fertility. One of the reasons is that it is often difficult to isolate one risk factor, such as pesticide exposure from other risk factors for lower fertility. How ever it is sensible to avoid certain known hazards.

Food And Alcohol

Some foods are potentially hazardous mainly because they may be contaminated with pollutants (such as mercury) or microorganisms (such as listeriosis) that cause disease. These are covered more fully. Coffee and alcohol intake may also influence fertility.

Coffee

Drinking coffee is unlikely to reduce your chances of conceiving unless you drink a lot: more than than five cups a day may slightly lower your fertility. Try to limit your overall caffeine in take to 250 to 300 mg. An average cup of coffee has about 90mg of caffeine. Remember that tea and certain soft drinks often contain caffeine.

Alcohol

This is linked with some reduction in fertility but only if you drink more than 4-8 alcoholic beverages a week. An occasional drink is unlikely to affect your ability to conceive significantly. How ever it is best to refrain from heavy drinking mainly so that you don’t have to worry about the possible effects on your baby if you do become pregnant.

Smoking

Smoking causes significant decreases in fertility. It’s estimated that about 13 percent of cases of infertility may be attributable to cigarette smoking. Smoking also reduces the amount of oxygen reaching your baby. Smoking lowers the age at which women start menopause, suggesting that it contributes to the premature depletion of eggs in the ovaries. Unfortunately infertility in smokers cannot always be treated successfully with assisted reproductive technology (ART) because smoking can permanently affect the ability of the ovaries to respond to fertility treatments. Smoking marijuana has also been linked to decreased fertility, especially when it is combined with alcohol. The best time to stop smoking is now, before you become pregnant.

X-Rays And Radiation

The amount of radiation in routine X-rays should not affect your ability to become pregnant in the future. However, women who have had pelvic radiation for cancer may have problems conceiving. The level of radiation in any one diagnostic X-ray should not increase your risk of miscarriage, however it is always a good idea to tell the technician if you are trying to conceive so that your uterus can be shielded.

The Do’s

Follow these helpful hints to ensure your spouse a healthy pregnancy:

• Get all her essential vitamins and minerals every day. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, women need a lot more iron when pregnant. And sometimes it’s hard to get enough by eating alone. Ask your doctor if your spouse should be taking a daily prenatal vitamin or multivitamin.

• Get 400 micrograms (or 0.4 mg) of folic acid daily in her diet. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, getting enough folic acid (or folate) reduces the chances of some birth defects. Some women eat lots of certain foods and others take multivitamins to get enough folic acid during pregnancy.

• Eat a healthy diet. Load her up on fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains (such as whole-wheat breads or crackers). Eat plenty of calcium-rich foods (such as non-fat or low-fat yogurt, milk, and broccoli) that your baby needs for strong bones and teeth. If you live in areas where fruits and vegetables aren’t in season, frozen vegetables are a good option. Avoid giving her a lot of fatty foods (such as butter and fatty meats) to eat. Choose leaner foods when you can (such as skim milk, chicken and turkey without the skin, and fish).

• Let her gain a healthy, not excessive amount of weight. Research shows that women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy have an elevated risk of obesity. On average, 25 to 30 pounds is a healthy weight gain over the 40 weeks of pregnancy. Check with your doctor to find out how much weight your spouse should gain during pregnancy

• Make sure she gets enough sleep (seven to nine hours every night). Aches, pains, anxiety and bathroom runs keep many pregnant women awake at night. To get some sleep, try getting your spouse to eat any large meals at least three hours before going to bed, get some easy exercise (like walking) and avoid long naps during the day. Make sure she sleeps on her left side and uses pillows between her legs and under her belly to help her get comfortable

• De-stress. If she can, your spouse should control the stress in her life. When it comes to work and family, she should figure out what she can really do. She should set limits with herself and others. Tell your spouse that she should not be afraid to say NO to requests for her time and energy

• Get Her Moving! Getting regular, low-impact exercise is good for your spouse and your baby. Talk to your doctor about what is safe. Get more guidelines on pregnancy exercising while pregnant.

• Get a handle on health problems. Talk to your doctor about how your spouse’s health problems can affect her and the baby. If she has diabetes, make sure she controls her blood sugar levels. If she has high blood pressure, monitor it closely. If she is overweight, talk to the doctor about whether she should lose weight.

• Ask your doctor before taking any medicines. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medicines all can harm your baby. Find out if your spouse should continue taking prescription medicines.

• See your doctor regularly. Prenatal care can help keep your spouse and the baby healthy, spot problems if they occur and prevent difficulties during delivery.

• Consider getting a flu shot. The flu can be dangerous for some moms-to-be. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests vaccinations for all women who are at least 14 weeks pregnant during the flu season. Ask your doctor if your spouse should get a flu shot.

• Make sure she wears her seat-belt correctly. Seat belts used correctly protect your spouse and your unborn baby during a crash. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that pregnant women use seat belts that have a lap belt and a shoulder strap (3-point restraint). Seat belt straps should never go across her belly. The lap strap should go under the belly, across the hips. The shoulder strap should go off to the side of her belly and between her breasts. If she are not driving, the back seat is the safest place for her to sit.

• Ease the aches and pains. Don’t just accept discomfort as a necessary part of pregnancy. Your spouse can easily be helped with problems related to hemorrhoids, heartburn, and leg cramps.

The Don’ts

Help your spouse steer clear of these pregnancy no-nos to help keep her and the baby safe and healthy:

• Avoid fish with lots of mercury in her diet. Get correct information from your dietician on what fish to eat and what fish to avoid when she is pregnant.

• Don’t disregard food borne illness. Eat, cook, handle and clean food safely! According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, food borne illness can cause serious health problems – or even death for both mother and baby.

• Protect her from using chemicals. Products including herbicides, pesticides, paint, stains, and some cleaning solutions may be harmful to your baby. If she must use these things, make sure she wears gloves, a mask, and keeps the room well-ventilated.

• Don’t let her clean or change a cat’s litter box. This could put her at risk for an infection called toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite that cats can carry in their feces. Toxoplasmosis can harm a fetus.

• Don’t let her take very hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, high temperatures can be harmful to the fetus, or causing the mother-to-be to faint.

• Discourage her from using scented feminine hygiene products. Pregnant women should avoid scented sprays, sanitary napkins, and bubble bath. These products might irritate your spouse’s vaginal area, and increase her risk of a urinary tract infection or yeast infection.

• Don’t let her douche. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, douching can irritate the vagina, force air into the birth canal and increase the increase the risk of infection

• Avoid optional x-rays. X-rays are a form of radiation that is linked to a very small risk of cancer for an unborn baby. But x-rays are usually safe during pregnancy. So if your doctor says your spouse needs x-rays for a health problem you should follow her advice. But sometimes doctors can use other tests in place of x-rays. And other times, x-rays can wait until after the baby is born.

• Don’t let her smoke tobacco. Tell your doctor if your spouse smokes. Quitting is hard, but she can do it. Ask your doctor for help. Smoking during pregnancy passes nicotine and cancer-causing drugs to your baby. Smoke also keeps your baby from getting needed nourishment and raises the risk of stillbirth and premature birth (a small baby born too early).

• Discourage her from drinking alcohol. Your spouse should stop drinking alcohol if she drinks it regularly. Experts are still unsure of the exact amount of alcohol needed to cause problems in your baby. But, both drinking every day and drinking a lot of alcohol once in a while during pregnancy can harm the baby.

• Don’t let her use illegal drugs. Tell your doctor if your spouse is using drugs. Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, speed (amphetamines), barbiturates, and LSD are very dangerous for your spouse and the baby.

If you and your spouse are planning to have a baby, an pregnancy calculator is an excellent tool to help you increase your chances of a successful conception.

Progression Literature: The Literature of Denouement: Introducing a New Literary Genre

In life, fiction, and non-fiction, what we perceive as ‘true’ depends on what we end up believing, based on what we learn. If the information is false,’the truth’ may in fact be false. Example: Lee Harvey Oswald is presented every Nov. in TV specials as JFK’s killer, with evidence to the contrary ignored/suppressed. In literature, emerging information (true or false),also changes the ‘truth.’ In progression literature, the reader may be surprised by how ‘truth’ can evolve almost endlessly.

If your spouse is a smoker, it is imperative that she give up cigarettes, at least while she is carrying the baby. Smoking during pregnancy is not a good sign for an unborn baby.

Here is a list of the ways in which smoking harms the unborn baby:

• It increases the mother’s risk of a miscarriage.

• It exposes the fetus to the toxins in tobacco smoke.

• It damages the placenta.

• It increases the risk of placental abruption (separation of the placenta from the uterus).

• It lowers oxygen levels in the fetus’s blood.

• It induces premature birth and lower than average birth weight.

• It causes the baby to be born with underdeveloped organs.

• It leads to impaired lung function in the infant.

• It doubles the baby’s rate of susceptibility to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

• It leads to general ill health.

• It increases susceptibility to diseases such as asthmatic bronchitis.

• It increases the likelihood of the child growing up to become a smoker.

While your spouse may realize the danger of smoking during her pregnancy, it may not be easy for her to give up smoking. Most smokers who try to give up their addiction suffer a strong craving for cigarettes. You can help her by reminding her that the cravings are only temporary, and by offering your moral support to her.

These are some things she can do to help your spouse give up smoking:

• Recognize and help her resist any craving to smoke.

• Help her fight the craving to smoke by distracting her with other activities.

• Discuss her addiction with her doctor.

Pregnancy And Smoking – Understanding Why These Two Have Nothing In Common Whatsoever

Sadly, mothers who smoke during pregnancy and after their babies are born do not understand that pregnancy and smoking do not mix and that they are not doing either themselves or their babies any good. Smoking reduces the supply of oxygen to the baby while he is in the uterus. Babies are more likely to die in the womb or at birth if their mothers smoke; they can be born prematurely and are sometimes small and sickly.

Pregnancy is a stage that is very critical especially to woman.  It is not like any other day of your life. Remember that you are not alone in you body when you are pregnant. There is now your baby. There are some few things you should avoid when pregnant to avoid risks that can complicate you and your baby.

You should not smoke or be around people who do. We all know that smoking is really dangerous to our health. When you are pregnant, make sure to avoid smoking or be around people who smoke because it will affect both you and your baby. Smoke is critical because it can lead to abortion, pre-term births, low-weight full term babies and fetal and infant deaths.
You should not drink alcohol. Like smoking, you should also avoid drinking alcohol because it has a variety of negative effects on your developing baby. In some situation, drinking alcohol can lead to severe retardation and other abnormalities, and of course, you don’t want to risk your baby’s life so you should avoid it.
You should not take illegal drugs. Illegal drugs is always a No No even when you are pregnant. When you are pregnant, make sure to avoid this because this will lead to your baby’s deficiency.
You should avoid hotdogs. People love hot dogs. I love hotdogs. But when you are pregnant, you should avoid hotdogs because some study says that hotdogs may have an increased risk of cancer.
You should avoid fish. Fish is our day to day food but you should avoid this when pregnant because some study say that fish is concentrated with methylmercury which can affect your developing baby’s brain.
You should not eat junk food. As the name itself says, it’s a junk! And these kinds of food don’t provide any vitamins or protein.
You should avoid Vitamin A supplements. It doesn’t mean that you avoid Vitamin A at all. What I am saying is you need vitamin A but not through Vitamin A supplements. All you need to do is eat foods that are rich in vitamin A.
You should avoid drinking tap water if possible. We don’t know where your tap water can from. Study shows that tap water can increase your risk of miscarriage. But if you want to drink bottled water, ask your doctor first.
You should avoid raising your body temperature. There is a potential danger to the developing baby if you body temperature rises. It can sometimes lead to miscarriage or abnormalities to your baby.
You should avoid stress. When you are pregnant, you should avoid heavy work and all you have to do is rest more and have a little exercise.

There you go. Now you know that things you should avoid when pregnant, always take care of yourself and your baby. See a doctor for more advice of taking care of your baby.

Thinking of Having a Baby?

If you are a male or female and are thinking about having a family the time to stop smoking is long before conception occurs. Smoking and second hand smoke can affect your chances of conceiving and can be damaging to reproductive organs, eggs and semen. Smoking during the first trimester can result in a host of problems and issues that can impact both the expectant mother and fetus. Smoking, including the effects of second hand smoke after giving birth, can affect the health and development of the new-born baby.

Teratogens are drugs, chemicals, or even infections that can cause abnormal fetal development and include alcohol, carbon monoxide and nicotine. Smoking and drinking result in high levels of alcohol, nicotine and carbon monoxide in the blood stream.

Carbon Monoxide has a higher affinity for haemoglobin than oxygen and a pack a day smoker will have carboxyhaemoglobin levels as high as 80 ppm and if you smoke all day you always have carbon monoxide in your blood stream that can affect you, your embryo or even your chances of conceiving or delivering.

Nicotine clears the body by way of first-order kinetics. One cigarette has a half life of 2 hours, which means if you smoke during the day you always have both carbon monoxide and nicotine in your blood stream 24-7, 365 days a year. Nicotine, the main psychoactive ingredient in tobacco, readily crosses the placental barrier to cause growth and neurobehavioral abnormalities in the offspring.

Alcohol clears the blood stream slowly by way of zero-order kinetics at a constant rate of 10-15 ml per hour or 1.0 ounce of 100 proof alcohol per hour and you can’t speed up its elimination.

Smoking is bad enough but smoking and drinking is worth quitting if you want to improve your chances of becoming pregnant and having a happy healthy baby.

Effects of Smoking Before Pregnancy

Smoking can adversely affect the ability of individuals to conceive and bear children

Smoking decreases fertility levels in both men and women

Tobacco use has been shown to cause erectile dysfunction (ED) in men

Smoking damages sperm DNA

Women who smoke are roughly twice as likely to experience a delay in conception

Smoking can speed up the rate at which fertility declines

Smoking can be harmful to the female ovaries

The severity of damage due to smoking is proportional to the amount and length of time that a woman smokes

The chemicals found in cigarettes, primarily nicotine, can interfere with the female’s natural ability to produce estrogen

The nicotine found in cigarettes can also cause eggs to be more prone to genetic abnormalities

Effects of Smoking During Pregnancy

Early rupture of membranes and premature rupture of the amniotic sac that can induce labor before the baby is fully developed

Infants exposed to smoke, both during pregnancy and after birth, are found to be more at risk of SIDS due to the increased levels of nicotine often found in SIDS cases

Smoking nearly doubles the risk of low birthweight babies

Smoking during pregnancy is implicated in placenta previa, ectopic pregnancies, placental abruption and congenital heart defects

Women who smoke anytime during the first trimester put their fetus at a higher risk for birth defects

Smoking can also impair the general development of the placenta and therefore the umbilical cord (which transfers oxygen and nutrients from the mother’s blood to the placenta)

Smoking Effects After Pregnancy

Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke after birth are more likely to die of SIDS

Infants born to smoking mothers are at an increased risk for bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, asthma, and impaired respiratory function and slowed lung growth

Babies born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy may undergo withdrawal-like symptoms

Smoking habit interferes with the potency levels in the women affecting it adversely. So, women must quit smoking to avoid pregnancy issues. It has been noted that women who smoke a lot fail to conceive. Many such cases have been reported by the sexual health organizations all over the world. The tremendous increase is being noted among the cigarette smoking women worldwide. Previously only 10% of the women were found to be the smoking cigarettes till 2005, but in last 3 years the percentage is being noted to increase up to 23%. This rise is more than double and really not good for the women’s health. This rise is being noted to be one of the factors leading to the pregnancy failures in the women. The rise in the infertility levels in being noted in the women all over the world.

Many research organizations has now started sending the direct messages to make women aware about the issue of impotence they are facing due to the smoking habit. It is really surprising to know that many people still don’t know that their smoking habit is making them infertile. One of the main issues with the infertility caused by the smoking is that it is very difficult to cure it. So, if you are facing infertility due to the smoking then it may be permanent and you may miss the best experience of your life, the motherhood. Please understand that smoking is no more an essential thing and you can quit it very easily with the help of the proper guidance and medications. I assure you that once you quit smoking there are chances that you may regain your fertility again, but it may take some time.

The pregnancy issues in the women are boosted due to the smoking. The hormone levels in the women are very important to be maintained at the normal level to get pregnant. The smoke of tobacco enters the body and disturbs the hormone levels in the body. Day-by-day the hormone levels, specifically the progesterone levels in the woman’s body start decreasing thus reducing the chances of conceiving the child. Smoking also directly affects the ovulation cycle in the women and makes here incapable to bear a child. Smoking women even fail to enjoy the sex due to the decreased sensitivity in the vaginal region thus reducing the chances of getting pregnant.

Smoking even a single cigarette in a day is not useful for the health. Women must avoid smoking the cigarette because it affects their capability to become mother. The fallopian tubes in the women that transfer the sperms to the ovule are being affected due to the increased nicotine content in the body. There are some treatments available to overcome the pregnancy issues in the women. But, the first thing you must do is to quit smoking otherwise this may lead to more complications.

Pregnancy issues are being noted in nearly every woman who smokes the cigarettes. About 90% of the women who smoke the cigarette fail to conceive. Women must understand that smoking is no way an activity of the pleasure. Many women are noted to be smoking to overcome the stress and depression. But, please understand that smoking is no way a solution to this. In fact smoking will lead to more health complications. You must consult the psychologist or counselor to overcome the depression and stress, but should never move on to smoking. Few women are found to be smoking just for the sake of fashion. There is also a myth that is if you smoke you are able to stay thin and healthy. Really I don’t know who has spread this absolutely ill logical and wrong myth, which has damaged the health of many famous models all over the world. So, just remember one thing smoking is injurious to health and have no benefits to health at all.

Smoking During Pregnancy: Risks to the Pregnancy and Harm to the Baby

Smoking During Pregnancy: Risks to the Pregnancy and Harm to the Baby

Smoking during pregnancy is one of the worst things you can do. When you smoke, your baby smokes too. There about 600 ingredients in cigarettes, and when a cigarette is burned, it releases over 4,000 chemicals. Many of these are poisons, and at least 50 of these chemicals cause cancer. So when you take a puff, your growing baby gets exposed to these harmful pollutants too. Because your baby is developing inside you, exposure to these pollutants can be very detrimental to his overall health and the safety of your pregnancy.

The nicotine and tar in your cigarette decreases the level of oxygen and nutrients that your baby receives. This can slow down your baby’s growth and development, and it puts you at risk for miscarriage and stillbirths (a baby with no heartbeat).

Luckily, if you quit smoking immediately, your baby’s growth will return to normal shortly.

Smoking during pregnancy has been associated with 5 percent of infant deaths, 10 percent of preterm births, and 30 percent in low birth weight babies. Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke can also increase:

Infertility—When compared to women who don’t smoke, smokers have a 30 percent increased risk of being infertile. They also experience a delay in conception—i.e. it’s harder to get pregnant when you smoke. Placental Abruption—A serious and dangerous complication that can occur during the third trimester of pregnancy. It occurs when your placenta separates from your uterine lining. Placental abruption can cause vaginal bleeding, resulting in fetal distress, uterine tenderness, and increased frequency of contractions. Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PRROM)—Your water breaks early, before the onset of real labor. Placenta Previa—Your placenta grows in the lowest part of the uterus, which can cause problems for the baby. You may bleed and require prompt care. Some women are even hospitalized.

It is estimated that over 20 percent of American women in their childbearing years smoke cigarettes, despite knowing its harmful effects. In 2005, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey reported that 14 percent of women smoke during pregnancy.

Babies who are born to women who smoked during pregnancy are also at an increased risk of having a cleft lip or cleft palate. A cleft palate occurs when there is a split in the baby’s lip and the roof of his/her mouth, creating a hole between the nose and mouth. Surgery is often used to reconstruct that part of the baby’s face.

The danger of smoke doesn’t end when your baby is born. Being around smoke can also put your newborn baby at risk.

When exposed to secondhand smoke, babies have an increased risk of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). As they grow, your child is at an increased risk of developing asthma, respiratory problems, ear infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis.

Because the babies of smokers tend to be premature and have low birth weights, they are also at an increased risk of serious lifelong health problems, such as mental retardation, learning problems, and cerebral palsy.  These babies are also more likely to have birth defects, including congenital heart defects.

The more you smoke during pregnancy, the more harm it will do to your baby. It is very important to try to quit smoking. Even if you can’t kick the habit completely, try to limit your daily cigarette intake.

Make an appointment to talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about your desire to quit smoking. They can refer you to a smoking cessation program and offer other ways to help you quit.

Remember to surround yourself in a positive environment. You are more likely to succeed if you have the support of friends and family who understand the harmful effects of smoking.
