Marijuana may have played a large part in your life for a number of years, but I’m glad you realize that now is the time to finally stop smoking weed. Firstly, I should congratulate you, as you are about to take a long and tough journey, and that in itself takes a lot of courage. You should also be aware that there are likely to be many barriers along the way, but the following 5 tips can show you how to deal with these and stop smoking marijuana.

1) Take control of the situation – I would hazard a guess that many of your friends currently smoke marijuana. Well if you’re trying to quit, hanging out with these friends could be extremely difficult. In fact, you are far more likely to relapse and start smoking again.

I would suggest that for the first few weeks at least you avoid the friends you typically enjoy smoking marijuana with. In addition to this I would remove all temptation from your path, and throw out any weed paraphernalia that you own. This should include anything that is remotely connected to your “habit”.

2) Trick your cravings to go away – A craving (any craving) is generally limited to a certain amount of time. Think about the number of times you have had a food-craving, and because you are unable to feed this need, the feeling soon subsides. The exact same can be said when you feel that you really have to smoke some marijuana.

I would typically advise you to ride out the feeling for approximately 15-20 minutes and you should notice that it has gone. You will also find that each time you put off the decision to smoke weed it actually becomes easier.

3) Change your thought process – Many of us are held back by a pot addiction because we believe it is something that we need and therefore cannot live without. How often have you told yourself that you are only able to do something if you smoke some cannabis first? Trust me when I say that you do not need marijuana or cannabis, and you can definitely live without it.

4) Take part in activities that are totally unrelated to smoking – I often relapsed into smoking cannabis after quitting due to boredom. Unfortunately, it took me a fair while to realize that I would now have far more time on my hands (as I had extra energy and didn’t simply want to lie on the couch all day), and so I should look to fill this void.

I have always been fairly fit, so I just upped the amount of exercise I did. I also go for walks most evenings, I have started to read a lot more, and with all the extra money I have saved, I like to treat myself once in a while. You need to find something that will keep you busy and keep your mind off the marijuana.

5) Always remain positive – When you initially stop smoking weed you will be filled with negative thoughts. How will I cope? Who will I talk to? What happens if I start smoking again? This is the perfect opportunity to remind yourself how well you are doing.

What good things have come out of you quitting marijuana? How long have you managed to go without? Are your friends and family pleased with you? There are so many positive aspects to stopping smoking weed, but sometimes we just need to give ourselves a little shove in the right direction.

Stop smoking! Exercise can help you stop smoking and make it easier to stay quit for life after you’ve finally stopped smoking. There are many reasons why exercise and physical fitness can help you not only quit smoking, but stop smoking for good.

Cardiovascular Health

Smoking aside, cardiovascular exercise is immensely beneficial to the human body, blood flow, heart disease prevention, positive mood, sense of well-being, etc. When you stop smoking and you commit to an exercise schedule as one of your quit smoking tools, you will help your body recover from nicotine dependence more quickly; and your cravings will not only be less severe, they will also be experienced less frequently.

There are numerous ways to engage in cardiovascular exercising and some of them include: Aerobics, biking, calisthenics (blurpees, jumping jacks, etc.), dancing, jogging, karate, kickboxing, running, swimming, and more. You don’t necessarily have to join a gym in order to get cardiovascular exercise; there are channels on dish that have interactive programs like aerobics, dancing, and yoga or you could just put together an up-beat music collection on your iPod or CD player and simply dance your own creative way.

Important Information: Heart disease is responsible for claiming over 200,000 lives of men and women everywhere. Women – especially – are at a high risk, as heart disease is the single most deadly threat to females, though few may realize the eminent danger they face. Whether or not you smoke, it’s important to gather the facts on heart disease and its symptoms and see to it that you remain in a low risk category by not smoking.

Brain Function

Your brain naturally produces neurologically transmitted chemicals (dopamine, endorphins, etc.) that send messages to the sensory department of your brain. Tobacco dependence is caused by the very addictive drug of nicotine and its ability to spawn the production of these chemicals. The more your cigarettes take over the manufacturing of these mood controlling aspects of your body, your brain stops functioning properly and ceases to ‘recycle’ neuro-transmitted chemicals.

In the early stages of withdrawal from nicotine, your brain is learning to cope without cigarettes. When you exercise at this very important crossroad of your stop smoking journey, you are forcing your body to naturally produce endorphins and other chemicals that may have not have otherwise been manufactured that early (comfortably, anyway).

Detoxification

When you stop smoking your body begins to ‘dump’ nicotine primarily through urine and sweat. Exercising to quit smoking is strongly suggested because it causes you to sweat profusely, thus cleansing your body of nicotine more quickly.

Improved Lung Capacity

Any time you exercise you are forced to breathe deeper to keep oxygen flowing through your body. This is excellent training for your lungs! Although it takes years to reverse the significant damage smoking has caused your lungs, treating them right when you first stop smoking will help you recover more quickly.

Daily Control Over Idle Time

Down time is a dangerous adversary when you stop smoking. By incorporating an exercise routine to which you are committed you will leave less room in your schedule to be tempted to smoke a cigarette because you have nothing to do.

Long-Term Rewards

If you stay committed to your stop smoking exercise plan your appearance, lungs, mood, and overall health will be much better. It’s easier to prevent a nicotine relapse if you are constantly reaping the rewards of not smoking. 

If you are not accustomed to exercising, start small. You don’t want to over-exert yourself too early for a couple of reasons. The first reason to start exercising minimally and gradually increase is to prevent soreness or stiffness the following day. You can also prevent consequential muscle aches by stretching properly before and after your exercise routine.

Another reason why you may not want to rush in with a ‘no pain, no gain’ mentality is because you want exercising to be an enjoyable experience. If you max out on your initial efforts, your brain will equate exercising with pain and that equation may prevent you from developing and committing to a routine.

You can stop smoking! Exercising should be combined with a support system and a quit smoking aid to help the fight to stop smoking for good be more easily won.

What are the smoking facts?  Smoking can kill you, and your cigarette addiction can also kill others.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking you need to start by changing your attitude and beliefs about your cigarette addiction.

All addicts engage in denial and rationalization.  You use these tidy bits of fiction to protect yourself from the stark reality of the smoking risks to your health and the health of those around you. Your tobacco addiction is likely accompanied some or all of the following bits of smoking fiction.  You cannot quit cigarette smoking unless you give up your denial and face the facts about smoking.

Fiction: I have the right to do what I want,  it is my body.

Fact #1: The facts about smoking reveal that your habit is contributing to air pollution, global warming, accidental poisoning, escalating  prevalence of asthma and even sudden infant death syndrome. Your addiction is harming not only you but those around you.  Your are not alone on this planet, and you are not alone in your life.  There are other people who love you and need you and your smoking is as harmful to them as it is to you.

Fiction: If I keep the windows open when I smoke in the car I am protecting the children from the harmful effects of smoke.

Fact #2: This does nothing to protect your children from the smoking risks to health. Every time you smoke a cigarette in the car they smoke it with you. 

Fiction: Smoking is a bad habit.

Fact #3: Smoking is a tobacco addiction not a habit.

Fiction: Everybody smokes.

Fact #4: Everybody does not smoke.  So many people in Canada are giving up smoking that the national rate for smoking is approaching 18% . If you smoke you are in the minority not the majority.

Fiction: Smoking is cool.

Fact #5: When you smoke you do not look cool, you look stupid.  Let’s face it you have freely chosen to engage in an activity that drains your pocket book and harms your health. This decision calls your intelligence into question.  Smoking statistics in Canada show that smoking is more prevalent among the unemployed, lower income groups and populations with 12 years or less of grade school education.  Smoking doesn’t make you look cool it makes you look uneducated, unemployed, and poor.

Fiction: It is only tobacco. Its not like its heroin or anything.

Fact #6 : Nicotine is more dangerous that cocaine, heroin or alcohol when it comes to dependence. Dependence develops quickly.  The product is legal and easily available making the dependence easier to maintain. Tobacco addiction causes more health problems worldwide than heroin.

Fiction: It is legal so it can’t be that bad.

Fact #7: See smoking fact # 6

Fiction: I only smoke socially when I am with friends.

Fact #8: See smoking fact # 6. Your social smoking will likely result in a tobacco addiction.  If you value your friends do not harm them.  You have a moral obligation to protect them. 

Fiction: I am still young and will quit before I get older

Fact # 9: See smoking fact # 6. Smoking statistics show that most people start their cigarette addiction when they are teenagers.

Fiction: It is hopeless, I have tried many times and I cannot quit cigarette smoking.

Fact # 10: Not everyone is successful the first time they try to quit cigarette smoking.  The facts about smoking show that most former smokers had several unsuccessful attempts before they finally overcame their tobacco addiction.  Keep trying!

Of all the known smoking risks to your health perhaps the most significant one is not facing the facts about smoking and living in a world of denial.

If you want to quit cigarette smoking your reality check should include facing the smoking facts.  This one is so important it bears repeating.

Smoking can kill you.

Oh wow – look at YOU! Did you just stick your finger in a light socket girl? Frizzies or what? What? Me? Oh I use hair styling foam and it keeps my fuzz nicely tamed down. I couldn’t stand it otherwise. Well, you know what my hair is like without help. So what happened to you today? Oh, got up late and didn’t have the time to handle it. What? You don’t have any hair styling foam? Holy smokes girl, well at lunch break, we’re going to go track some down and you can get rid of that – halo effect!

So why would you want to use something in your hair that might leave it sticky or not help you style it? Hold on a second here, if that is what you think then you have the wrong idea about hair styling foam. These days it’s incredibly light, easy to use and won’t leave behind a sticky residue. Not only that, it also packs a powerful punch when it comes to styling.

Why is using hair styling foam a good idea when combating the frizzies? It’s a good idea simply because it adds badly needed moisture to your hair. But it also does more than that. It has special ingredients in it that help your hair retain what moisture it already has. That’s a bonus! And one other thing you will be interested in – it controls static. And here you thought the only thing that gave you static was your nylons while you were walking across a carpet. Nope, this static is the kind that makes your hair stick out like a Medusa’s head. Hair styling foams with static control mean you can use them in cold dry climates, and indoors of course.

If you happen to love the sun and spend a lot of time outside under its rays, check the label of the next can of hair styling foam you buy. Make sure it has sunscreen in it. Not all of them do, and this little added bonus will make your hair pretty happy, plus reduce the amount of sun damage to your tresses. Besides, being out in the sun sucks moisture from your hair and that makes your frizzies even worse.

If you happen to get a hair styling foam that comes in an aerosol container, use only about a quarter sized dab from the can. One quick push of the button should dispense all you need. If you use too much, you will be wasting the product, go through it more quickly and pay more in the long run. So be wise with your hair styling foam and just use what you need.

How to Stop Smoking Part 2: Stop Smoking Tools to Help you Succeed!

You can stop smoking! Welcome back to your detailed quit smoking plan, and congratulations on your decision to stop smoking. If you are seeing the second part of this series without having seen the first, you may want to find it. 

Full Day 1

Since you were able to excrete most of the nicotine in your body already, your physical craving is significantly less severe than it would have been if you had smoked right before having gone to bed. Your actual ‘habit’ of smoking in the morning, though, is another story. You may find yourself reaching for cigarettes automatically only to remember that this is the first day of the rest of your life not smoking!

If it’s a weekend and you have no prior commitments: Lethargy is a common symptom when you first quit smoking. Feel free to stay in bed! If you really have nothing to do, you’re just begging for self destructive idle time, anyway. You have the right to baby yourself when you’re sick, and to stop smoking is to deal with a life threatening illness from which you owe it to yourself to claim your freedom! If it’s within your power in the first 24-48 hours, take time to recover!

If you have to go to work: In your process of telling your co-workers of your plans to quit smoking you will have been able to identify the non-smokers who are encouraging you to stop smoking for good. Find them at breaks and lunch, and adopt their non-smoking habits. When break time comes, keep your affirmations strong by changing – yet still acknowledging – the proclamation your desire to have a cigarette. Say out loud, “I am having a temporary craving that will pass;” or something along those lines…Never, “I want a cigarette,” or “I need to smoke,” or any other self defeating affirmation.

Your stress level (obviously) is likely to be high on your first day after you stop smoking, so try to be extra mindful of the way you interact with those around you.

Around the hour you quit on the previous day, you can expect the corresponding time frame to deliver you a serious rush of anxiety and tension. This could only last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, but the most likely scenario is that it may continue for a couple days. It will pass! You do not have to smoke. Taking measures with a natural stop smoking treatment,  or another smoking cessation aid will help make these symptoms much less severe.

Beware: If you smoke at this critical juncture, you could lose all willingness to even try to quit smoking for weeks, months, or even years! The disease of nicotine is cunning, baffling, and powerful; and it will go to great lengths to prevent you from giving up tobacco. If you’ve made it this far, hold on; because it WILL get easier.

During your normal every day actions during which you used to smoke like drinking, talking on the telephone, or flipping through channels with the remote; start using your ex-smoking hand for these activities so it’s not sitting there doing nothing while your other hand is completing all the work. This may sound insignificant, but it’s actually a quite effective tool in the battle against smoking addiction.

Day 2

Argh! (No, seriously) You are all but guaranteed to be going crazy with fiend for a cigarette. While the actual cravings don’t last long, your nerves are going through a restoration process that is a natural part of nicotine withdrawals; which means that – even when you’re not wanting to smoke necessarily – you are just in a state of discontentment and aggravation because of the discomfort and shortness of temper caused by the depletion of dopamine, endorphins and other naturally produced chemicals that smoking took over for your body.

Your brain, nerves, lungs, and every other organ in your body that was affected by smoking (there are many) are all learning – just as you are – to adjust to life without cigarettes. They will heal, but the process is not comfortable. Do not let it be your reason to give in. You can stop smoking!

Day 3

Generally, the feelings of anxiety are still somewhat strong, and they may or may not be starting to disappear. Hopefully, you are still carrying around your list of your reasons not to smoke to which you need to refer every time you are thinking about lending the power back to your nicotine addiction. You are at the most stressful part of your journey, and everything will start to get easier from here, so stay strong and don’t give up!

Day 4

Finally, things are starting to return to normal. Your body will begin to regulate its production of vital mood stabilizing chemicals that it once produced all on its own before nicotine interrupted the process, and your coping abilities should be starting to bear a more civilized nature. Your appetite will be out of control. Allow yourself to indulge, but don’t go overboard and remember about the healthful snacking!

Day 5

Personally, this day for me has historically been rough. It’s a type of comfort zone in which you are in grave danger of relapse. Do not mosey on over to a smoking co-worker or make a sly plan in the morning to meet up with a friend who smokes for lunch or another affair, either! Again…Cunning, baffling, and powerful! Don’t let your disease fool you!

Day 6

Hopefully, at this point of the game you are adjusting nicely to life without cigarettes. Your senses have possibly returned to a degree you hadn’t even realized was possible; and your lungs are definitely feeling better. Your cough, however, may have been getting increasingly worse at this point. That’s normal, and it could last for the next few weeks. You may be able to minimize the side effects with a homeopathic stop smoking treatment.

Day 7

Congratulations! This is a huge milestone in your journey! Today is the day that your brain finishes the process of creating new habits! Everything you do will get easier and easier from here on out! You’re not out of the woods, yet, though, because your disease is still at work trying to convince you to start smoking again. Be aware of its attempts throughout the day to convince you that you can have just one cigarette or even one drag…You can’t!

Even if you are able to stop with one drag or one smoke the first time, that will give you permission for the next time; then that will give you permission to smoke again until you’ve increased your level of smoking to that which is just a bit more cigarettes in a day than you were smoking before you quit. Some of the tricks your smoking addiction will try to play on you include:

Going to the smoking section at work

Making plans with a friend or family member who smokes

Engaging in behaviors that are conducive to smoking (going to bars, drinking excessively, etc.)

Encouraging you to stop a complete stranger you see smoking outside as you’re leaving the supermarket or eating establishment to ask for a cigarette.

2nd Week

Stay vigilant in your guard against your disease, and start enjoying life without smoking. You will quickly realize how much money you’re saving. Many smokers like to reward themselves with a teeth whitening kit or a special shopping spree with the money they are no longer spending on cigarettes. You deserve it! You’ve accomplished something very difficult that will undoubtedly add years onto your life.

Remember that your nicotine addiction is a powerful disease that is always at work. It is in the back of your mind strength training and getting stronger behind your back. Stay aware of the dangers that await you around every corner. You are only one drag away from a relapse that could claim your life. You CAN quit smoking! Make the decision to stop smoking today!
