If you don’t have any reason to quit smoking pot then you should seek professional help.

I have my own reasons why I quit smoking, but it was mainly because I’m having a baby and don’t want it around my baby. It is the strongest reason that I have found that had helped me quit smoking pot. For so many times I have tried to quit and many times I had failed. So it’s real when people say that I child is a blessing.

Do you know what the side effects of marijuana are? Well I’m not an expert on health so I guess I’ll just have to tell you some of my experiences. First off, I was not doing well on my job like my boss always tells me I’m always slacking. I do pretty stupid things when I get too high that makes don’t want to go out the house for a few days. I was getting fat because I always have the craving. Financially I was not stable because I’m always slacking off. And finally I’m getting dumber by the day.

Sure it’s easier said than done. It’s really good thing to find a very good reason to quit smoking. But you know what else I did besides finding my own reason? I seek help, from professionals. From people who knows what to do to help me. Guidance is all you need, remember there is no instant cure for this addiction. It will take some time and along with proper guidance it is 100% possible that you can do it.

How to quit smoking pot is not something to take lightly if you are addicted to marijuana. Many people can kick the habit quite easily but other struggle again and again quitting then relapsing over and again as only an addict can. This does not mean you are weak willed or incompetent but often it does mean you embarked on this journey full of passion but without a plan.

A plan does not need to be overly complicated, in fact a simple plan is often better than something convoluted. What the point of it is to order yourself into a routine that will overcome the problems you have faced quitting. It also means having action plans to put into effect if you are tempted with cravings from some addiction trigger that may waylay you.

So a skeleton outline might be:

Set a quit date. Throw out all remaining pot (do not smoke it!) Get rid of all weed paraphernalia (bongs etc) Exercise every day at least 30 minutes Reward self with something nice and non drug related each week of being weed free etc…

Action plans

If tempted immediately call family for a chat If tempted get out of the house straight away If tempted take out list of reasons to quit and read

This may seem very simplistic but you will be amazed at how writing these things down and having them clear in your mind at all times will help along with your own willpower. How to quit smoking pot will be an easy question to answer once your framework is up and you feel more confident that those plans on paper will not be confused like what happens in your mind when you start craving for weed.

Is marijuana addictive?

That has been the 64 thousand dollar question! And, the answer to that question seems to ride solely on the chemical co-dependence theory. From time to time, I’m sure you’ve heard someone ask; is this substance addictive or that substance addictive, right! The list could go on and on couldn’t it? Well, to answer that question, nothing is addictive but any substance or activity can be used as an addiction! In other words, people choose addictive behavior, and there is a primary reason why they do. Have you ever wondered why some people can smoke pot, use a drug, or drink alcohol and walk away from it yet others can not? If these substances were in fact chemically addictive or caused a chemical co-dependence by attacking key receptors in the brain, wouldn’t everyone who tried the substance once become addicted to it? The answer is yes! But, that doesn’t happen –EVER! However, the chemical co-dependence model has become a common methodology, which has been perpetuated by our own government agency the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA.) If you visit the (NIDA) website you will find countless CT scans displaying the chemical effects of psychoactive substances on the human brain. Now, I am not disputing the fact that marijuana, drugs, alcohol, nicotine and other substances do chemically alter the brain, however, so do other innocuous substances such as sugar and salt. And furthermore, that chemical alteration is not the root cause of the addiction and nor does it prevent addiction recovery.

The Root cause of Marijuana Addiction

I believe there is a common denominator or root cause of every addiction. So, whether you’re addicted to marijuana, drugs, alcohol, sex, food, or gambling, they all have a common thread. Plain and simple, the root cause of addiction is the emotional scars caused by family dysfunction. Patterns of verbal, sexual, and physical abuse, along with absentee parenting and substance abuse cause emotional trauma. This emotional trauma results in low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. As an addiction recovery coach, I have never experienced a single case of addiction that wasn’t rooted in family dysfunction – not one!

The Effects of Marijuana

There has been a great deal of controversy concerning the classification of marijuana as a drug. Is it a stimulant, a depressant, or a hallucinogen? Unlike most other substances such as cocaine, opiates, and alcohol, which are classified as either stimulants or depressants, marijuana seems to be quite unique since it exhibits the effects of all three classifications. The major psychoactive chemical in marijuana is called delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Therefore, as the level of (THC) rises, so does the strength and potency of the pot. Even though marijuana seems to induce mostly hallucinogenic effects, it also causes stimulation and depression. The effects of marijuana can vary from one individual to the next, but if you’ve been smoking pot, I’m quite sure you understand the changing dynamics of the experience. Initially, there is a stimulating and euphoric effect that elevates heart rate and blood pressure. This stage is frequently followed by a hallucinogenic phase where some may experience impaired vision, delusions, and even paranoia. And the final phase usually results in a mellowed or somewhat depressed state, which often exacerbates anxiety and depression. This may seem to be counterproductive since most individuals using marijuana habitually are doing so to cope with anxiety and depression. However, for some the former euphoric and hallucinogenic benefits seem to out way the later depressive phase.

 How to Quit

OK! I’m not going to mince words here. Will power has nothing to do with quitting. Absolutely, unequivocally nothing at all!  If you really want to quit smoking pot you’re going to have to face the issues that are causing your anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. Fix the root of the problem and smoking pot will become repulsive to you. Start by examining your history. What types of dysfunctional patterns have contributed to your emotional pain? Were you verbally, physically, or sexually abused as a child? Were you forced to parent your siblings or worse one of your parents as a child? Or, did one or both of your parent’s abuse alcohol and drugs? How have these patterns caused your anxiety, depression, and/or low self-esteem? Once you uncover these negative patterns, you must take the action necessary to liberate your self from them. This is the foundation required for empowering yourself and restoring your self-esteem, which is a vital component to addiction recovery. Let’s face it! If you really felt a strong sense of self-worth would you be engaging in self-destructive behavior?

When you embark on your search to learn how to stop smoking pot one of the things that you must be keen to understand is how marijuana affects the brain and how this in turn affects your addiction and your choices surrounding smoking and quitting.

Marijuana has a chemical component called THC which most pot smokers know of. It is this chemical that causes the feelings of a high that can mellow you out and can also cause paranoia and panic in some users also. It is the chemical that you are etste3d for in a drug test also. THC in marijuana however is NOT addictive like nicotine from cigarettes are or others chemicals from harder drugs.

So how do people become addicted to a non-addictive substance then?

When we do any activity that causes a high of some sorts we stimulate the reward center of our brain which controls what we believe is rewarding and fulfilling. Over a long period of time smoking marijuana often we become wired to treat marijuana as a needed ‘reward’ so when you feel down it will be the first thing you think of to get you out of a funk. It also becomes habitual just as other rewarding acts become in people’s lives.

So what happens when you try to quit smoking Pot?

Without this reward you will feel something is missing and you get a mental if not a physical craving for marijuana; you want it but you do not NEED it. This does not mean you are weak willed but it can often be confusing when you consciously know pot is not good for you anymore but you feel that without it you might be even worse off.

To this effect you must ‘rewire’ your brain to realize that you can be rewarded and fulfilled through other things. Exercise, hobbies, social interaction and many other things can replace this nagging voice that keeps telling you to smoke pot. This is a major part in plotting out your plan to stop smoking weed.

Many people who decided they want to quit marijuana have no idea where to begin. This article discusses some simple steps you can take to begin the journey of quitting marijuana. Take the first step and set a quit date, then write it down!

Set a Date to Stop Smoking Weed.

The purpose of setting a quit date, is to allow yourself to get mentally and physically prepared to quit smoking marijuana. Your quit date should be an actual date. It should not be when your stash runs out, or roughly a week before the next semester of school starts, or next month. It is important to nail down the date. In my personal experience, before I learned to set a date that I would stop, I used to smoke my stash as quickly as possible. I did this because I convinced myself that each bag was my last bag. When my bag ran out, I would buy another one, and smoke it just as quickly, convincing myself that it was also the last bag. Does this sound familiar? I recommend setting your quit date, within one month of the current date. If you wait any longer, you are less likely to follow through with your goal. It is a great idea to set your quit date just before a vacation begins, or other major event. Quitting Marijuana is a lifestyle change. If you attach it to another lifestyle change, you are more likely to be successful.

Understand your Addiction.

Marijuana addiction is a controversial topic because people fail to differentiate between a physical addiction and a psychological addiction. While marijuana has physical withdrawal symptoms similar to that of cigarettes, it is the psychological aspect of the addiction but most users struggle with. Long-term marijuana smokers are in the habit of smoking pot every day and are used to being in a stoned mindset. While you do not have a physical need for marijuana, you do have a mental need to get high. that’s the tricky thing about it. It’s not that you’re addicted to marijuana, it’s that your mentally addicted to being high. the more we smoke, the more our brains get used to being high, and the more we crave that state of mind. he will go through a mental battle when you stop smoking weed. You need to prepare for battle.

Get Rid of Your Gear

Marijuana smokers have lots of great gadgets. You may want to give all of your supplies to friends, or you may wish to throw them away or break them as a symbol of your resolve to stop smoking weed. Whatever you do, clean your environment so that there is no trace of marijuana or of marijuana related equipment. Cravings are easier to resist when there is nothing immediately in front of you. People will do some strange things to get stoned, including smoking pipe resin, checking the cushions for weed crumbs and roaches, or even digging through the trash to find the last scraps they threw away. I will admit, I have done all of these things in the past.

Be prepared for withdrawal.

Not being prepared for marijuana withdrawal is the number one reason that people fail to quit smoking. If you’ve got a quit date set, you’re already ahead of the game, because you know when you will be going through withdrawal, and you’ll be prepared. Anxiety is very common in the first stages of withdrawal. For example, you have probably been through a time when you just run out of pot and have made plans to get more but it didn’t work out. You are on edge and jittery until you can secure a new supply, or at least get stoned. Multiply this by 10 times, you will have an idea of what the anxiety can be like if you are unprepared to quit for good. Insomnia and loss of appetite are also common in the first week of quitting. Do your research on what withdrawal will be like so that you can be mentally prepared to face these problems when they arise after you quit smoking weed.

The question whether to go cold turkey or to gradually wean yourself off marijuana as an often asked one when discovering how to quit smoking pot. Some see it as the only method worth doing and others think that this is too harsh and will add so much more stress to an already problematic addiction to be not worth the struggle. This article will look at the pros and cons of each method.

Quitting Smoking Pot Gradually

Opponents of the cold turkey method primarily believe that ending such an ingrained habit so suddenly can erode willpower very fast and the stresses of not being able to have any of the substance they think they need will lead them to crack and take it up again. Gradual decline seems a lot easier to deal with as weaning your body off marijuana over time can make this seem like less of a chore and a way to function more normally as you quit smoking weed.

However, this method involves a lot more planning than quitting straight up as you need to follow an exact plan on how much you will cut down on over the next weeks. You would need to make sure you never smoked more than a certain amount per day and make sure that amount is steadily reduced over time until you are at a stage you can stop smoking all together. This has its problems in that when you are smoking pot how much you smoke can easily get out of hand leading to a breaking of the contract you made with yourself and once high it becomes harder to judge these things. Many also believe that this method does not truly allow people to quit as they are avoiding the final outcome and also not being entirely honest with themselves about their NEED to quit.

Cold turkey supporters believe that if you have a date to stop smoking and you plan for that date to be done with marijuana you stand the best chance of quitting because you are being honest about wanting to stop and must muster the courage and motivation to actually do it. Marijuana while only a “soft drug” compared to the likes of cocaine, heroin and others can still be a very addictive and destructive drug. Many people who long to quit smoking pot find their lives revolve around marijuana and it becomes a habit that fills any gap in their lives. It can become such an integral part of their lives that they feel like they are living in a haze most of the time and are missing out on some very important parts of life. The first thing to know when learning how to quit smoking weed is that the drug is not chemically addictive!

Pot is not an addictive drug like heroin or cigarettes as there is no physical craving that occurs when you do not take the drugs. Pot does not affect the receptors in your brain like these drugs and the effects are also not as vivid as the hard drugs making it less of an issue to many people to start smoking. The primary addiction to weed is a psychological addiction, the memory of the highs you once felt smoking pot always come back and make you want to try to reach that feeling again even if it takes you more and more pot to do this as you become more resistant to its effects. The smoking goes from a pleasurable action to a habit with little real benefit just a perceived one. To compound this many pot smokers have friends who also smoke and it becomes a social thing making it more ingrained.

So this being said it is possible to quit smoking weed without suffering cravings or relapses and you are not fighting with a chemical need but a psychological need which can be overcome with willpower. While this may sound easy it can of course be a lot harder in practice as the habit can run very deep especially for those who have smoked for years. Quitting can be accompanied by anxiety and depression as you learn to live life without the constant smoking which can seem soothing and comforting but only because it was a part of your routine. The trick for some people is to find something to replace this addiction, obviously not another addiction but something creative and fulfilling. Something that makes you happy without an extreme high you may try to latch onto as an alternative.

So how to quit smoking weed in a nutshell? You must realize you do not crave weed but just want it! Once you learn to adapt to a life without marijuana you will find you can quit smoking pot forever!

Ive been smoking for about 9 years now, almost every single day (unless I couldent find any to buy) About 11 days ago, I was pulled over for a routine stop…..with 5 dime bags in the console!! Of Course, I was arrested…They ALWAYS find it, even if u decline a search, they will hold u there until another officer shows up with the warrant, so dont try the whole constitution thing! LOL. Luckily, this was my first offense, and it was not ruled a felony, only a possesion charge…whew. However!- this does not go to say that everything is “OK”. After the event, I began employment at a really great company. 1 week in, the new hires are told that they must submit to fingerprinting and another background check, as a requirement for job duties. You can imgine the panic! Although I had not yet been technically convicted, I realized that this ssmall little charge, would appear on my record, and my prints would show the arrest record. Not to mention the information on a public court site. The job really only looks at Felonies and crimes dealing with dishonesty, fraud, etc. Which may SOUND like a loophole, but REALLY, do you think any prestigous Company is going to overlook that? Needless to say….if you care anything about a FUTURE, one with no worries or stories to cover up that weed possesion and the questions that arise from it, Quiting is a MUST. Even if a job would decide to overlook it initially, just them knowing about it will make them “piss” you. And if you havent stopped, well then, kiss that job goodbye. It seriously just isnt worth it! yea its not crack, or coke, but I still feel like someones a junkie, if they would choose a plant and a temp. happiness over a lifetime of success, advancement and no worries. Not to mention, a clean record and the opportunities to compete in the real world. Im still on a journey and its been HELL, even now, Id love to go roll up and chill out. But, I realize that smoking weed is not the only thing there is to who I am. It starts with willpower and the need to just tell yourself to grow up and cut the BS!!! I hope this helps someone : )

A very dark ‘hahaha’ to Muse_Away. Nobody is trying to ruin anything for you. The truth is some people out there, like myself, have a personality clash with the herb. Nobody has the exact same characteristics… I can enjoy a few beers without going overboard and feel fine, but pot has been making me feel worse and worse and it is a difficult habit to break. ‘Addiction’, ‘habit’, whatever, some things are just not good for certain people. I only wish I was as lucky as those who can smoke weed and feel normal.

I smoke and it makes my life better. I don’t waste my time on television (which is a form of escapism, btw) or video games. I draw, do art, write, read, philosophize with my friends,expand my mind, exercise, eat well, and GO OUTSIDE. Weed has made me more accepting of others, has expanded my mind, increases artistic ability, relieves anxiety, and helps me sleep. Don’t ruin it for everyone else just because you don’t have any sense of self-control or discipline.

Hi Everyone!!! I am reading this article and others because I have been smoking since I was 15…smoking pot that is….I’m 28 now and I now smoke every day as I have for years smoking multiple times per day and the truth is that I haven’t gotten the “real” benefit from smoking in I don’t remember how long…..It hit me when I went to my first Muay Thai class and couldn’t jump rope for 5 minutes straight without stopping multiple times…so, I decided I have to do something. So here I am reading this article, and am going to give it my all to quit. I may have to take steps in order to do so but I am willing to put the effort in. Anyone ever quit pot after years of smoking? How was it? Did you use any tricks or anything. I’m hopefully replacing my pot with Muay Thai which will be a bit cheaper than Pot too!!! LOL

This is a useless site and anyone who smokes weed already knows it’s not an addictive substance and is only habit forming. That’s not the reason why most pot-head can’t stop burning. The reason simple and plain is because they don’t want to. If something makes you feel good than why would you want to stop. If you want to stop than just stop. Being a pot-head myself and having stopped for periods in the past to beat drug tests and probation periods I know what I’m talking about. When you really want to stop, you just stop. I think it is slightly physically addictive… I had to quit after years of smoking, and for the first couple weeks, I couldn’t control my body temperature. I was waking up in cold sweats constantly. I also had little to no appetite for several days. Your body gets used to a certain chemical composition… when you suddenly change that composition, it’s going to react.

You are full of crap. Long time habitual smokers do go through physical withdrawals. There are real physical changes when you quit.
The only reason why pot is considered non-addictive is because it leaves your body slowely over the course of three or four days. This does NOT mean that addiction isn\’t possible.

I smoked week for 11 years straight hard and heavy, i finally quit almost 2 years ago, i dont crave it or anything, i do have dreams that i still smoke it and honeslty would still do it if i could but my job is way more important than a high. I made my decision. i have always been somewhat chunky, from 160-200. I was 162 when i stopped smoking, have always been active even while smoking and every since i stopped even more so active. But everysince i stopped smoking i have gained 70 pounds in a year and a half and the dr/s say my thyroid is underactive but i have never had this much of a problem with my weight unitl i stopped smoking. i honestly think that if i was still smoking i wouldn;t be this large and i am on medicine for my thyroid i work out and walk 4-5 days a week , work 40+ hours a week on my feet in nursing and just can’t seem to budge the weight. I never did any other street drugs but that so thats the only conclusion that i can come to. Any thoughts?

A common misconception among many people today when they ask how to stop smoking pot is that marijuana is much like cigarettes in that they are physically addictive and so very hard to stop smoking because of cravings within the body. These cravings can drive you to distraction unless you have a smoke to calm down. This in fact is totally incorrect and is probably just a mish mash of misinformation likening a joint to a cigarette because you smoke them and of course the fact many other drugs are very addictive chemically like cigarettes.

Marijuana has no chemical like nicotine that addicts people; instead pot is psychologically addictive. This means that the urge to continue smoking pot is more about you wanting to gain a high rather than your body needing the drug to stop its pain. Stopping smoking pot is hard only because you do not want to subconsciously.

Now this does not mean that it is easy to quit pot or that you are lacking willpower however. Psychological addictions can be very problematic as people with gambling problems can tell you and requires a great deal more introspection into your own motives and weaknesses so you can pin down the real reason you keep coming back to marijuana time and time again.

To do this however you do not need to go “cold turkey” and simply stop and try to live your life the same as before but without the drugs. This is sometimes the worst thing you can do as there is often a huge gap in your life that can seem big and cold and empty and that time you used to “escape” by smoking pot can lead to you failing in your attempt to quit and falling back into the habit or by picking up another addiction that could be even worse.

To combat this while you sort out the underlying reasons for your addiction it is vitally important to find something healthy and fulfilling to fill that gap such as:

Meditation
The art of meditation can really help pot smokers by allowing time to be spent clearing ones thoughts and those that become very good at it discover they can achieve a different sort of high that though is different to the drug is fulfilling and healthy. By clearing your mind with meditation you can also help sort of the more difficult things in your life that seem so complicated and difficult normally and which just fade away when on drugs.

Finding a rewarding hobby is also a great way to take your mind off marijuana. By occupying your thoughts with something creative like drawing, painting, writing or many other things you can find new talents and new ways of self fulfillment that last beyond a chemically induced high. It can also be an outlet for pent up emotions that may be triggering your desire to get high.

Exercise
While increased exercise is great for your health in general exercise allows pent up energy and frustrations to be spent in a good way. Smoking weed often represses these things making the problems worse. Engaging in a team sport is also a great way to make new friends and contacts that are not into drugs if your current group of friends are still into them making it hard to engage socially. Activities such as yoga are also great to combine with meditation.

 

If you can fill your life with healthy, rewarding and fulfilling pursuits you will find the need to use marijuana will be greatly reduced and allow you to see your life clearly without the haze of weed clouding your judgment. In the end, how to smoking pot is about finding the root cause of your addiction which can only be done by taking the time and impetus for the drug. Even with these new activities you can fall back into the habit without psychological adjustment and understanding however but it is the first step of being free!

This article was not helpful at all especially against the title.
How to quit without going cold turkey, you would’ve thought you
would state a gradual process of eliminating the drug. Like instead
of smoking 4 joints a day try to make 1 last, then 1/2, gradually
moving down to nothing. All the suggestions you made were basic common sense
ideas that everyone else who has never been addicted (yes addicted)has used.
You are still saying to quit cold turkey. Your title contradicts your hints.
