Smoking, as the ads say, is dangerous to one’s health.  And it is.  Continued smoking may cause health complications left and right, not only to yourself, but also to the people around you.

According to statistics, smoking is responsible for approximately one in five deaths in the United States.  This vice kills approximately 259,494 men and 178,404 women yearly.  Smoking long-term may cause lung cancer, emphysema, cardiovascular diseases, pregnancy abnormalities, childhood asthma, and sudden infant death syndrome.  Isn’t it high time people thought of quitting?

History of smoking
The earliest recorded history of smoking dates back to 5000BC from the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andes.  Smoking has also been present in many cultures around the world.  Early smoking has been related to religious ceremonies – as offering to people’s respective deities, as cleansing rituals of shamans or priests for divination and spiritual enlightenment.   After the European exploration and conquests, tobacco smoking was introduced to the rest of the civilized world.  Since then it has evolved from religious ritual protocol to a social activity.  

Why is it difficult to quit smoking?
With the sudden rise of awareness campaigns about the ill effects of smoking to one’s health, a lot of people have tried quitting smoking.  Herein lies the obstacle – How does one stop smoking.  According to a recent study done in 2004 and 2005, fifty-five percent of smokers said  that it would be difficult to go through an entire day without smoking.  Why is it difficult to stop smoking?

Loose tobacco stuffed inside cigarettes contains nicotine which is highly addictive.  Just like with any other addictive drugs, the body and mind may quickly become used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person may keep looking for it.  This has been the biggest ordeal quitters are trying to overcome, the nicotine fits.

How can I quit smoking?
The best way to stop smoking is to stay away from cigarettes.  It’s easier said than done.  Here are a few steps to cut down on cigarette smoking to make quitting easier.
Switch to a brand that has lower nicotine content.  The key is gradually lessening the nicotine intake to avoid having withdrawal symptoms.
Lessen the number of cigarette sticks you smoke each day.
Smoke only half the cigarette stick.
Postpone your usual first “stick of the day” by one hour.
Decide how many sticks you’ll be smoking during the day and stick with it.  Pay a penalty for every excess still you smoke.

If the above mentioned tips don’t help you lessen your nicotine intake in a day, there are a lot of products created to help smokers quit their habits.  Among the more famous “stop-smoking” products are:
Nicotine patches.  This is a small, self-adhesive patch designed to slowly release nicotine into the bloodstream through the outer layer of skin.  These are often worn on the upper arm.
Nicotine gum.  The nicotine is released into the body from the gum.  Not only does it satisfy nicotine fits without the use of cigarettes.

Smoking, however cool it makes a person look like, is still going to take its toll on the body after a while.  The next time you light a cigarette, think of all its adverse effects and ask yourself, “is it worth the complications it’ll bring you in the future?”

Marijuana or scientifically known as Cannabis is sometimes called weed. Others call it “pot” and other names. Regardless of how it is called, this has one effect on one’s mind. It can be addictive. Once you tried it, it is even harder to stop it. If you really aimed to stop smoking marijuana, you should know more information about it-its effects and result to your body. When you are knowledgeable enough, you will be equipped to stop your addiction.

If you are not knowledgeable enough about Cannabis, you might think that it will not have any bad effect towards your body. People who do not have enough information about stopping Cannabis addiction will bring about the worst effect, that is, slavery to pot smoking.

General Information about Cannabis

Remember, marijuana has totally different effect compared to that of cigarettes. Cigarettes will bring about physical sickness whereas marijuana will bring about bad effects on your body and mind. With marijuana, you will be too dependent on it and you will surely crave and feel somewhat crazy if you’re not going to have it.

When a person withdraws from cannabis, the effect is similar to that of giving up weed smoking. When a person craves for cannabis he will surely have scary dreams. Sometimes it is vivid. Scientifically, this is due to the so called THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol that remains in his body system. During the process of withdrawal, a person feels more anxious and even more paranoid. He will also have difficulty in sleeping. However, these symptoms will just fade away as time goes.

When a person tries to stop smoking pot, there is always the so-called psychological dependence. You will always have this thought of feeling to have it, and that you need it. Well, this is the psychological effect of cannabis addiction. For others, since smoking weed is their way of escaping their problems, when they stop smoking cannabis, they will feel more depressed.

So, is it really difficult to stop smoking cannabis? It’s not. Just think positive. There are ways to succeed in your aim for a brighter future. Here are some simple tips:

1. Set your objective. It is important that you are committed to stop smoking weed. Stick to this commitment. You should bare in mind and engender in your heart that you want to stop smoking. Believe in yourself and don’t lose hope. It is important that you will set a 100% positive mind and heart on your aim.

2. Read and understand cannabis addiction. Get more idea about it. You should research more ways about stopping weed smoking. Learn the withdrawal process and the possible things that you will face during the different stages of withdrawal. In this so called “battle”, you will not win if you are not equipped.

3. If you are introvert, overcome it. Communicate and open up with others. Remember, however, to choose your friends. It is useless to still be with friends who influenced you to do pot smoking. Be with people who are willing to sympathize, to empathize and understand what will go through.

May you be successful in this aim. Remember, once you got out of this darkness you will surely have a brighter future.

Marijuana or scientifically known as Cannabis is sometimes called weed. Others call it “pot” and other names. Regardless of how it is called, this has one effect on one’s mind. It can be addictive. Once you tried it, it is even harder to stop it. If you really aimed to stop smoking marijuana, you should know more information about it-its effects and result to your body. When you are knowledgeable enough, you will be equipped to stop your addiction.

If you are not knowledgeable enough about Cannabis, you might think that it will not have any bad effect towards your body. People who do not have enough information about stopping Cannabis addiction will bring about the worst effect, that is, slavery to pot smoking.

General Information about Cannabis

Remember, marijuana has totally different effect compared to that of cigarettes. Cigarettes will bring about physical sickness whereas marijuana will bring about bad effects on your body and mind. With marijuana, you will be too dependent on it and you will surely crave and feel somewhat crazy if you’re not going to have it.

When a person withdraws from cannabis, the effect is similar to that of giving up weed smoking. When a person craves for cannabis he will surely have scary dreams. Sometimes it is vivid. Scientifically, this is due to the so called THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol that remains in his body system. During the process of withdrawal, a person feels more anxious and even more paranoid. He will also have difficulty in sleeping. However, these symptoms will just fade away as time goes.

When a person tries to stop smoking pot, there is always the so-called psychological dependence. You will always have this thought of feeling to have it, and that you need it. Well, this is the psychological effect of cannabis addiction. For others, since smoking weed is their way of escaping their problems, when they stop smoking cannabis, they will feel more depressed.

So, is it really difficult to stop smoking cannabis? It’s not. Just think positive. There are ways to succeed in your aim for a brighter future. Here are some simple tips:

1. Set your objective. It is important that you are committed to stop smoking weed. Stick to this commitment. You should bare in mind and engender in your heart that you want to stop smoking. Believe in yourself and don’t lose hope. It is important that you will set a 100% positive mind and heart on your aim.

2. Read and understand cannabis addiction. Get more idea about it. You should research more ways about stopping weed smoking. Learn the withdrawal process and the possible things that you will face during the different stages of withdrawal. In this so called “battle”, you will not win if you are not equipped.

3. If you are introvert, overcome it. Communicate and open up with others. Remember, however, to choose your friends. It is useless to still be with friends who influenced you to do pot smoking. Be with people who are willing to sympathize, to empathize and understand what will go through.

May you be successful in this aim. Remember, once you got out of this darkness you will surely have a brighter future.

First let’s define addiction. The type of addiction I want to talk about right now is the physical addiction, not the mental. We’ll deal with the mental aspects of addiction in a moment. For now, let’s just address the physical aspects of addiction.

Who tells us that smoking is addictive?

The Tobacco Companies.

They are very certain that cigarettes are addictive, but I must share with you – thousands of people quit smoking every day, and not one of them experiences any kind of physical withdrawal symptoms that you would see in a normally addicting chemical like cocaine or heroin. Again, by definition, when I refer to addiction, what I’m talking about is the physical malfunction that bodies go through when being deprived of a substance upon which they have become dependent.

No one’s body malfunctions when they stop smoking cigarettes.

In fact, think about it, how long can you go without a cigarette?

Do you sleep at night? How many hours? Do you smoke in your sleep? No? People who are truly addicted to a chemical like heroin or meth cannot sleep through the night, they have to get up to take a hit, just to go back to sleep. No one does that with cigarettes.

What about a movie? If you go to a really good movie, you can sit through the entire show without a cigarette, yet most people don’t think they can go 2 hours without smoking.

What about a long plane flight? You can sit on a plane for many hours without smoking.

Doesn’t this make you wonder how addictive cigarettes really are?

Exactly! Now how many cocaine addicts would say they can go for hours or days without taking a hit? How many heroin or meth addicts? For that matter, how many alcoholics?

You see, even with just looking at your own life you have demonstrated that cigarettes do not have the same addictive characteristics biologically that truly addictive drugs do.

Now, I’m not into conspiracy theories or anything, but think about it, who benefits most by us thinking that cigarettes are addictive? The cigarette manufacturers! Wouldn’t the best sales pitch in the world for any consumable product be, “If you start using these in your teens, you will smoke them for the rest of your life.” It’s got to make you think, doesn’t it?

In fact, when I talk to people who become non-smokers, the most severe physical problems I’ve ever had people tell me about is headaches – which were more than likely stress related anyway. I also hear about sore throats and sometimes shaking hands.

But let’s be honest about these so-called “symptoms.” Are they not simply irritations instead? Irritation and malfunction are not the same things. They’re not even in the same ballpark! Those symptoms do not cause malfunction. They just cause discomfort, which is not a word used to describe the addictive withdrawals from any other truly addictive drug.

I don’t know whether you have ever seen anyone on meth but it’s not a pretty sight. For example, the average meth addict if he hasn’t had his regular fix will experience some terrible withdrawal symptoms such as sweats, shakes, heart palpitations, nausea, even hallucinations.

Now when was the last time you saw someone experience anything like that when they tried to quit smoking? I mean, they might get a little grumpy, or irritable, but they don’t experience any of the physical symptoms that someone on heroin gets do they?

You’ve probably heard about people who contracted lung cancer from breathing in second-hand smoke. Now the nicotine and all the chemicals are strong enough to kill them, but they weren’t strong enough to addict them. For years people passively breathed in all that nicotine but it doesn’t make them want to smoke.

So if it isn’t a physical addiction, what is it?

It’s a mental habit.

When you wake up in the morning and you have that first cigarette you are reinforcing the habit of smoking. Then 20 (or so) times during the course of the day you are reinforcing the habit of smoking.

Every time the hand goes up to the mouth, about 10 times with each cigarette, that’s about 200 times a day you are reinforcing the habit. What else do you do 200 times a day? Nothing, except breathe.

So it’s a strongly conditioned habit. And the only reason you are still doing it is because you are still doing it. And the only way to stop is to just stop. Cutting down doesn’t work. That’s like telling an alcoholic to cut down their drinking. They can do it for a while but it soon creeps back. So you have to just quit smoking.

And because it’s just a mental habit you can break it easily (when you know how).

Then you have things like nicotine patches and gum. Would you believe that patches and gum provide a massive dose of nicotine, one day’s supply of nicotine patches is equivalent in nicotine terms to about six packs of cigarettes a day. Now that’s standard cigarettes so that’s about 12 packs of low tar cigarettes and about 18 packs of the ultra lights.

So how come any body who has tried patches or gum and so is getting more nicotine in their blood stream than they’ve ever had before, still reverts back to smoking!?

Why on earth would you still want a cigarette?

Because it’s not nicotine addiction, if it were the patches would work.

According to some of the research that’s been done, if you try to quit smoking just by using will power about 3% – 6% of people will stop. If you quit smoking using the gum about 10% of people will stop, an improvement but not much of one. If you quit smoking using patches then about 10% – 15% of people will stop, again an improvement but not much of one.

And if you look at those figures around the other way, about 85% to 90% of people who try nicotine replacement therapy fail. Now that means it doesn’t work.

So that means the problem with cigarettes is not the nicotine, the problem with cigarettes is the habit of smoking.

Of waking up in the morning and having that first cigarette at the same time every day and then 20 or so times during the day having a cigarette at those particular times – with a cup of tea, after a meal, driving a car, when the phone rings, in stressful situations, with alcohol etc.

The act of smoking becomes linked in your mind with these daily situations and so they become a trigger to smoke. This is what a habit is.

So the key to quit smoking for good is using a method that focuses on removing the mental habit of smoking. This is the key to quitting and staying a non-smoker for the rest of your (now longer) life!

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in April and then called for a national anti-smoking movement in the United States for the entire region to reduce the number of deaths from smoking lung by more than 400,000 people a year. CDC expects the adoption of policies to control, prevent to stop smoking are enforced uniformly throughout the United States.

The CDC estimates that 46 million adult smokers in the U.S. smoke cigarettes, and deaths due to smoking reached approximately 443,000 people a year. In the state of West Virginia, the number of adult smokers reached 26.5%, in Indiana 26%, Kentucky 25.2%, Missouri 25%, and 24.7% Oklahoma. In the report mentioned decrease in smoking prevalence occurred in the age group 18 years and over. This age group record highs in 1965 with the percentage of smokers at 42.4%. That number then dropped below 30% for the first time in 1987 with the percentage of smokers reached 28.8% of the total smokers in the United States. Decrease in number of smokers is expected related to the application of high cigarette taxes and the issuance of rules and regulations adopted smoking rooms in most of the work environment in addition to the health counseling.

The composition, in 2007 at Uncle Sam’s Country 22.3% of smokers were male adults and 17.4% were adult women. African Americans who smoke reach as much as 19.8% and 21.4% were Whites.

Women smokers who are pregnant run a greater risk of pregnancy complications, pre-term delivery, miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death. Smoking can result in low birth-weight as babies born to smokers are on average 7 ounces lighter than those of non-smokers.

If a women smokes while pregnant she is thought to have a 33% higher chance of losing her baby before or just after its birth. Even after a child is born, smoking by a parent increases the chances of sudden infant death syndrome, infant and prenatal deaths, learning disorders and attention deficit disorder in young children.

When looking to quit smoking for good, there is one important factor which is often overlooked and the reason why so many people fail to quit smoking year after year. This is so critical, that quitting smoking is literally impossible unless you nail this one factor down. The most frequently overlooked aspect in quitting smoking is getting your mental game straight.

If you seriously want to quit smoking for good, you need to come to the battlegrounds with the right mindset, a mindset for success, if you do not, you will subconsciously self-sabotage your efforts. Without further ado, here are the 3 quit smoking tips:

 

Quit Smoking For Good Key No.1 – You Must Believe it is Possible for You.

Often times people engage in negative self talk and have negative chatter going on in their heads along the lines of “It’s too hard to quit”, “I don’t have the willpower!”, “I’ve tried ‘X’ times and it just doesn’t work for me” etc, etc. The truth is the more you tell yourself lines such as this, the more you will program your mind into believing it will fail. Your mind is a computer and it WILL be programmed. Catch ALL your negative programming as it happens and shut it off. Replace it with positive thoughts such as “Quitting smoking is easier and easier with each new day!”, “I feel healthier and stronger each day”, “My mental strength increases with each passing day, it becomes easier and easier for me to live a smoke-free life”. Take an inventory of your self-talk on a DAILY basis, become critically aware of it, it is THAT important.

 

Quit Smoking For Good Key No.2 – Visualize Success.

It is equally important to not only believe quitting smoking for good is possible, but for you to see it in your minds eye as having actually HAPPENED. Take a moment to close your eyes, and visualize yourself in the present moment, living a smoke free lifestyle. Notice how much healthier you appear, your eyes are clear and bright, you walk with a bounce in your step, you’re enjoying life, able to breathe the surrounding air freely and fully into your lungs, notice the subtle aromas in the surrounding environment you otherwise wouldn’t. See how much more positive and happy you are in your interactions with others, notice how others perceive you differently, in a more positive light as they notice your sense of pride and accomplishment emanating from within you.

Take the time to really see in your minds eye, you, living a smoke free life. Allow yourself to feel all the associated positive emotions, keep your eyes closed and perform this long enough to the point that you’ve forgotten you’re visualizing it and you’re done for the day! Now repeat this DAILY! It will feed into your subconscious and in a weeks time you will feel MUCH more positive about your ability to quit smoking.

 

Quit Smoking For Good Key No.3 – Persevere and be Relentless

It is vitally important that at each and every instance of a setback to your progress towards a smoke free life, that you do not allow it to throw you completely off target. If you have a lapse and veer off your course, smoking a cigarette you didn’t plan for, do not dwell on it, and more importantly do not let it de-motivate you to the point of giving up completely! If you believe you have tried everything and you just can’t seem to stick to a plan, ask yourself this “What were the last 100 things I tried to quit smoking for good?”. That’s right, 100, list them off. Can’t think of 100? Ok then, 50…20? Do you see what I’m getting at? It took Thomas Edison over 1000 tries to develop the light bulb, what would have happened if he stopped at his 999th try? Failure. Be relentless, it is possible, no matter WHO you are, regardless of whether you realize it now or not, I am telling you it is absolutely 100% within your ability to quit smoking for good right now! Believe it and never give up no many how many times you fall down, get right back up at it. Develop it and take pride in this winning mentality!

 

What I have just shared with you is so critical you must not just read over this and say to yourself “Ya, ya, I know all about that”. It is one thing to know about it, it is another thing to register it on an emotional level and really FEEL it inside of you. To not only know it intellectually, but to live it emotionally. These steps are not for you to know, they are for you to take in, breathe in, to feel, and most importantly, implement in your life. Once you have the mental game down and develop a deep and true understanding for each of these points, you are well on your way to a new, healthier you.
