Reasons why Alcohol Makes You Want To Smoke More

There are a number of reasons why alcohol consumption causes you to want to smoke, some more apparent than others. Read on to find out what all of them are!

First, there’s the obvious one that drinking alcohol lowers your inhibitions and, especially for someone who is trying to quit smoking, makes it harder to resist their temptation to smoke. This is difficult to change because of the way alcohol works with your body, but has its roots in the second reason why drinking makes you want to smoke.

More importantly, though, is that for anybody who has smoked cigarettes for any real period of time (and let’s face it, if you’ve been smoking for two months you aren’t reading this article!) you’ve developed a substantial connection between drinking and smoking. Look outside every bar you can find and you’re guaranteed to find a smattering of cigarette butts lying around there.

Especially as someone who has just started smoking, having one after a few drinks is an excellent feeling. As such, the groundwork is laid for a continuing connection that will become rather difficult to break unless approached correctly. Luckily, that correct approach isn’t really too surprising: you just need to teach your subconscious that smoking and drinking don’t have to be linked, that you can enjoy a few drinks without having to light up a cigarette.

IT sounds weird (and almost like a basis for alcoholism) but practice drinking without smoking, and you’ll notice that over time you’ll become less inclined to smoke when you’re drinking. Just don’t overdo it with the drinks!

There are so many reasons these days to quit smoking Health, Political, Social and financial. Let’s take a look at each of these aspects and see how smoking relates to each.

Health

There are all the obvious health issues that we hear about such as Lung Cancer, Heart disease and respiratory disease.  Smokers are 10 times as likely to get lung cancer and emphysema as nonsmokers. But what about the others like cancer of the esophagus and throat, high blood pressure and pulmonary embolism. Smoking causes increased stomach acid, leading to heartburn and ulcers. Smokers have higher risk of deadly pancreatic cancer. The carcinogens from cigarettes are present in the urine and can lead bladder cancer, which is often fatal. High blood pressure from smoking can damage the kidneys.

Do you get out of breath when you exert yourself even a little bit. This could be a precursor to Heart disease or respiratory disease. Are your feet always cold. This could be due to high blood pressure and poor circulation.  Smoking constricts blood vessels and raises your heart rate and it takes about 60 minutes from taking your last puff for your blood pressure and pulse decrease.

Even if you don’t get cancer, do you want to be one of those people carrying an oxygen bottles everywhere you go for the rest of your life.

Everyone has heard about people committing suicide by breathing the exhaust (carbon monoxide) of their car. But did you know that each puff of cigarette smoke contains 3.2% carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide robs the blood of oxygen because the hemoglobin in your blood will pickup carbon monoxide molecules in favor of oxygen,  and it takes over an hour for the carbon monoxide levels in your blood return to normal after that last puff. Each cigarette you smoke contains at least 17 known poisons that you take into your body with each puff.      

And not to mention the danger of second hand smoke to our children and other love ones. Children are the ones most affected by second hand smoke. Because their bodies are still developing, exposure them to the poisons in secondhand smoke puts children in danger of severe respiratory diseases and can hinder the growth of their lungs and the effects can last a lifetime.

If you smoke during your pregnancy you are not only risking your health but endangering the health of your unborn child. On average, babies of women who smoke weigh less at birth than babies of nonsmokers. Statistics have showed that infant mortality is 50 percent higher when the mother smokes. Children of smokers are also 2½ times more likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome, or crib death.

 Political

Today there are more and more laws being passed related to smoking, you can no longer smoke inside any public place and in some places you have to go to a designated smoking area even if you are outside. You cannot enjoy the cigarette with your cup of coffee after dinner or smoke while sitting at the bar, no you have to go outside in the cold to the smoking area for that all important smoke break.

There are places that if your smoke is drafted from your house to your neighbors they can report you to the police department for disciplinary action.

Many companies have started to refuse to hire smokers. Smokers cost more money than non-smokers to employ. Smokers take longer and more frequent breaks as well as use more sick days, and they cost more to insure.

Let face it as a smoker you do not have a legal leg to stand on, no rights and it is getting worse every day.

Social

 Smoking causes premature aging and drying of the skin. The tobacco stains your fingers, fingernails and teeth. You have a yellow smile very embarrassing.

Your breath smells like an ashtray. Who want to kiss an ashtray.

Your close reeks of cigarette smoke.

If you smoke in your house it reeks of cigarette smoke and the paint is discolored and stained.

Your car smells and there are cigarette ashes everywhere and the glass and mirror are stained.

Financial

Remember when I said you no rights and no legal leg to stand on, well that’s not all, you are being fined for smoking. That’s right fined; in addition to the sales tax on that pack of cigarettes you have a sin tax for the sin of smoking. Cigarettes cost anywhere from .70 to .75 and .87 to .25 of that is tax.

 The average cost of a pack of cigarettes is about .25. Let’s assume you smoke one pack per day. During the course of a year, those cigarettes are costing you 365 x .50 = 07.50. You think well that’s not too bad.

But what about the other cost related to smoking. Heath and life insurance cost more if you are a smoker. Increased dental care and cleaning costs. The cost of keeping your house and car cleaned not to mention your close and all the gum and breathe mints so you do not offend.

As you can see there are many reasons to quit smoking can you make a list of as many reasons not to stop.

There is one essential key in the battle to quit smoking for good.  Most of us know what it is.  We just don’t consistently put into practice what we know we should.

If quitting smoking is your goal, then there is one step you absolutely have to take if you want to be successful.  And that is to remove or avoid all the triggers that make you want to smoke a cigarette.  Sounds simple, right?

It is simple . . . in theory.  But, as with anything worth doing, the difficulty and complexity arrive during the practical application of the theory.  That means you need awareness and vigilance, an assiduously applied plan, and even the help of a proven stop-smoking program.  

The first thing to keep in mind is that we are not the logical creatures we like to think we are.  We operate most of the time on emotions and sensuous associations.  Generally, it’s only after the fact–after we make a decision or embark on a course of action–that we come up with a rational explanation for why we did what we did.  We first act, most of the time, because of an environmental, emotional, or associational trigger.  And so it is with smoking.

Think about it.  When do you crave a cigarette the most?  It’s usually after a big meal, when you’re stressed, with your favorite beverage, during the poker game, when you’re bored, when the in-laws arrive.
These are the things you must take pains to avoid.

Here’s how it worked for me.  About a year before I quit smoking for good, we moved to a rural area.  The house sits beside a small lake and has a huge deck on the side facing the lake.  I formed the habit of sitting in my favorite deck chair for hours in the evening, watching the lake and the wildlife, sipping my favorite drink and smoking.  It wasn’t long until every time I went out on the deck I wanted a cigarette.  That was the strongest smoking trigger for me.

So when I gave up smoking, I also had to give up sitting on the deck.  I tried it a couple of times, but the craving for a cigarette was too powerful.  As much as I missed it, I had to give up my quiet time on the deck.  And I still don’t go out there much now.  It’s not safe for me.

Just as I discovered that deck-sitting was out for me, you’ve got to figure exactly what your smoking triggers are.  Then you need to write them down and draw up a plan.  Your plan might include rescheduling meal times, avoiding certain places and situations, finding new methods for dealing with stress, and so on.  If you go into the battle armed with this awareness and a plan, your odds of victory will be that much greater.

It worked for me anyhow.  I just wish I had also been aware of some the other proven techniques for quitting smoking for good.  Armed with these, I would, possibly, have won a quicker victory.

In order to stop smoking weed and make a real change in your life, there are some things you should know so that you can make this happen.

First of all realize that smoking weed is an addiction. Just because it is a “soft” drug without a huge physical dependency does not mean that it is not an addictive substance. Smoking pot is a real addiction and so is the lifestyle associated with it. If you smoke it for long enough then eventually your whole life will be set up around buying and using the drug with other people who do the same. Thus it becomes a lifestyle choice and it is not a very healthy one in the long run for a variety of reasons. This goes beyond the physical damage that is caused by smoking and also includes the fact that you are medicating your feelings and escaping reality when you smoke every day. This makes you stagnate in terms of emotional growth and most people will slow down mentally as well. All in all, there are a number of good reasons to want to overcome an addiction that as debilitating as this one.

The way to make this happen is to make a decision in your mind. If you hem and haw over this idea then nothing will come of it. You can’t just wish for things to be different and expect your whole lifestyle to suddenly change for the better. You have created a life that revolves around smoking weed and it’s going to take a tremendous amount of effort to undo that. So if you want to go through with it then you need a firm decision about it. If there is the slightest hesitation then you should resume your weed smoking and just shelve the idea for a later date. You are not ready yet.

If you are ready though then it might make sense for you to attend treatment. Even though you do not need a physical detox from Marijuana, you can still benefit from treatment in a number of ways. One way is through the help and support of other people in treatment who are all on the same path as you are. The other way is through an introduction to the 12 step program that can also help you to stay clean in the long run. Finally, you’ll also get hooked up with someone in therapy and they can give you guidance and help you work through certain issues that you may have. Treatment can be an important step for many people in early recovery.

After you leave treatment and gain some knowledge and tools about how to stay clean, you will need to shift your lifestyle quite a bit in order to maintain your new found sobriety. If you go back to your same set of friends and your same old hangouts then it is likely that you will get high again. The way to change this is not to deprive yourself of doing things, but rather to shift your interests and find some new things to do. Life is about to get really exciting for you if you are willing to explore your options and have a little fun with it. There is more to life than getting high and once you get clean from the chemicals then you can start experiencing some awesome new things again. Life will be worth living again and you will find purpose and meaning in your life as long as you stay clean and sober. Although you might feel depressed at first without your drug, it does get better! The key is to start purposefully creating a new life for yourself.
