All over the world, there is a concerted effort from different sectors of the government to enact stiffer anti-smoking laws due to the overwhelming evidence that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and other serious diseases.  These laws are also being made to deter the proliferation of second hand smoke that causes serious diseases and premature deaths in both adults and children.
There is no more question regarding the veracity of the ill-effects of cigarettes to people who smoke as well as to those who do not smoke. Second hand smoke is a proven cause of lung cancer and heart disease in non-smoking adults. It is also blamed for the so-called sudden infant death syndrome, low birth weight, acute respiratory infections, ear infections and asthma attacks in infants and children. It is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths in the United States of America each year.
There is no risk-free level of exposure to second hand smoke. Every exposure has substantial and immediate adverse effects on cardiovascular and respiratory health. Each cigarette actually contains more than 50 carcinogens.
It is about time that a comprehensive smoke-free law is enacted that will be applied to all workplaces and public places. Comprehensive smoke-free workplace policies are the only effective way to protect non-smokers from second hand smoke. Other approaches, such as the installation of air ventilation systems and the setting-up of smoking and non-smoking sections of rooms are not effective and do not not eliminate chances of exposure.
Contrary to what the critics are saying, the laws protect the health of the general public without harming the business sector. Evidence from peer-reviewed studies shows that smoke-free policies and regulations do not have an adverse economic impact on the hospitality industry.
With this report, all arguments and excuses not to take action are eliminated. Many research and hard economic data have revealed that smoke-free laws do not harm sales or employment in restaurants and bars. In fact, they sometimes have positive feedbacks, such as what happened in New York City after the law has taken effect, business receipts for bars and restaurants increased, their job employment rose, and the number of liquor licenses increased. This happened despite the fact that most establishments complied with the law, and the great majority of New Yorkers supported the law.
Another positive outcome is that smoke-free laws resulted in significant cash savings. According to statistics from the Society of Actuaries in the United States, second hand smoke cost the country around US$ 10 billion a year in health care bills, lost wages, and related expenses.
Even the corporate world has joined the bandwagon by maintaining smoke-free workplaces and providing a specified area for smoking. Some countries, states, provinces, territories, and districts have adopted full smoking bans inside restaurants and bars. Second hand smoke, or passive smoking, is a major preventable cause of death. Since smoking hurts more people than just smokers, smoke-free laws need to be upheld at all times to protect everyone’s right to breathe clean air.

Cancer is a devastating disease that has changed the lives of millions around the world. With continued research and more effective treatments, deaths from cancer have been decreasing, and the length of time survivors are able to live in remission is increasing. The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering among those most affected by this devastating disease. The American Cancer Society tracks cancer occurrence, including the number of deaths, cases, and how long people survive after diagnosis, in addition to data regarding risk factors for developing cancer and the use of screening results.

Present facts and figures for 2007 for cancer incidence, mortality, survival, cancer risk factors, and annual estimates of expected new cases and deaths by cancer for the general population, Hispanics, African Americans, breast cancer, global cancer statistics, and annual updates for cancer prevention and early detection can be found in various online reports available for immediate download. This is a great place to go to find strength and inspiration from a vibrant community of people whose lives have been affected by cancer. Members share their personal stories with a renewed sense of hope that good things are yet to come.

Women smokers are just as vulnerable to serious health problems like lung cancer or cardiovascular disease as their male counterparts. In women, however, smoking carries an increased risk of cardiovascular disease because it can affect their hormones, causing an estrogen deficiency. Women smokers are 10 times more likely to die from bronchitis or emphysema and 12 times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smoking women.The risk of developing life-threatening, smoker-related diseases is even worse for post-menopausal women and women taking birth control pills. Women who smoke and who also take oral contraceptives may have an increased risk of suffering from a heart attack or stroke. If you are a woman smoker aged between 35 and 64, you are statistically nearly five times more likely to suffer from a stroke than a non-smoking woman of the same age.

Smoking is believed to double the risk of cervical cancer. About 30% of all cervical cancers have been attributed to smoking. Smoking women are at a higher risk of early menopause and infertility. If women smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day or if they had started smoking before they were 18 years of age, then they are placed at a greater risk of infertility. Women who smoke are also at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis and other degenerative bone disorders. Mothers who smoke carry the addictive substance called nicotine directly to the baby through their bloodstream. Women smokers who are pregnant run a greater risk of pregnancy complications, pre-term deliveries, miscarriages, stillbirths, and infant deaths. If a women smokes while pregnant, she has a 33% higher chance of losing her baby before or just after its birth.Smoking can result in low birth-weight as babies born to smokers are, on an average, 7 ounces lighter than those of non-smokers. Even after a child is born, smoking by a parent increases the chances of sudden infant death syndrome, infant deaths, learning disorders, and attention deficit disorder in young children. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of developing lung problems and asthma in children.

Though giving up smoking is difficult, it can be achieved with strong determination and discipline. If you want to quit smoking you can keep away or hide your matches, lighter, and ashtrays. On getting the urge to smoke, take a deep breath and hold it for five to ten seconds. Don’t let anyone smoke in your house. Try chewing gum or eat some fruits whenever you feel like smoking. To stay away from smoking, cultivate good habits like reading books or going for walks, join a support group, or talk to your health care provider. Exercise regularly and keep yourself busy.Tests have shown that women may, on an average, find it harder to give up smoking than men. This is despite the fact that women are often more at risk of developing smoking related diseases than men. A woman’s menstrual cycle can affect the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Women who are pregnant, or are intending to become pregnant, should generally not use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) because of the damage that nicotine can cause to the fetus. Women who are breast-feeding should not use NRT because the nicotine that passes into the system can easily enter the breast milk.

Reasons why Alcohol Makes You Want To Smoke More

var addthis_config = { “data_track_clickback”:true, ui_language: “en” }

google_ad_channel = AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = “en”;

There are a number of reasons why alcohol consumption causes you to want to smoke, some more apparent than others. Read on to find out what all of them are!

First, there’s the obvious one that drinking alcohol lowers your inhibitions and, especially for someone who is trying to quit smoking, makes it harder to resist their temptation to smoke. This is difficult to change because of the way alcohol works with your body, but has its roots in the second reason why drinking makes you want to smoke.

More importantly, though, is that for anybody who has smoked cigarettes for any real period of time (and let’s face it, if you’ve been smoking for two months you aren’t reading this article!) you’ve developed a substantial connection between drinking and smoking. Look outside every bar you can find and you’re guaranteed to find a smattering of cigarette butts lying around there.

Especially as someone who has just started smoking, having one after a few drinks is an excellent feeling. As such, the groundwork is laid for a continuing connection that will become rather difficult to break unless approached correctly. Luckily, that correct approach isn’t really too surprising: you just need to teach your subconscious that smoking and drinking don’t have to be linked, that you can enjoy a few drinks without having to light up a cigarette.

IT sounds weird (and almost like a basis for alcoholism) but practice drinking without smoking, and you’ll notice that over time you’ll become less inclined to smoke when you’re drinking. Just don’t overdo it with the drinks!

Edit Article |

Posted: Jun 16, 2009 | Views: 325 |

var addthis_config = { “data_track_clickback”:true, ui_language: “en” }

google_ad_channel = AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = “en”;

The life insurance industry is becoming tougher on smokers and those of us who are overweight.

When an insurance company calculates its premiums, it has to work out the risk of you dying whilst the policy is in force. (Or with Critical Illness Insurance, the risk that you will become critically or seriously ill during the policy’s term.) In this context, smoking and obesity have become increasingly important issues.

The life insurance industry pointedly ignores the views of some Pro Smoking Pressure Groups which argue that smokers under the age of 40 have around the same probability of dieing as non smokers. David Pickett, Life Insurance Manager at Sainsbury’s spoke for the insurance industry when he confirmed “Health risks associated with smoking can have a big effect on life cover costs. It is vital for those who have kicked the habit to review their policies”.

Just how big an effect smoking has on life insurance costs was highlighted in a recent snapshot study by www.express-life-insurance.co.uk. This found that the average smoker paid 56% more than a non-smoker. The study was based on nine of the UK’s top insurance companies and examined the premiums quoted for two men aged 30 asking for £100,000 cover over 25 years. The only difference between the application details was that one was a smoker and the other wasn’t.

The life insurance industry has also recently tightened its belt on the overweight members of society. Previously, only people with a Body Mass Index of 33 or more were considered as overweight. This level has now been reduced by 16%. Now anyone with a BMI of 28 or more is likely to face premiums loaded by 50%. If you’re anxious to know whether that includes you, you’ll need a calculator! BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilos by your height in meters and the result squared.

So if you’re intending to apply for life insurance is may be as well to loose a few pounds first – oops kilos – and they’re much harder to lose than pounds!

It’s not quite so straightforward for smokers. To qualify as a non-smoker, most insurance companies insist that you must not have “smoked or otherwise consumed any form of nicotine products during the previous 12 months.” Indeed, some companies go further and extend the qualifying period to 5 years!

Because premiums for smokers and chubbies are so high, it becomes even more important to seek out the cheapest possible prices. As you’re an internet surfer, the odds are you’ll land a good discount. Just search for cheap life insurance and let your fingers do the walking!! You’ll still pay more but the discount will soften the impact on the wallet. Expect online savings of 10% – 15%.

Totally Wicked E Cigarette Review

First and foremost, ask yourself this. Do you actually know the health effects that smoking can bring us? I bet almost everyone know, even non-smokers do. So what’s holding you back from quitting? Totally Wicked E Cigarette Review

However, the good news is you are here because you want to quit. So here’s how you can quit smoking.

Know the fact: Air equals life

Firstly, to quit smoking, the fact air equals life should be made clear to you first. This actually means that without air, we will die. So how can a normal person with the right mind choose to screw up his airways instead?

Here are more reasons why you should quit smoking. When you smoke, tar enters our airways through the mouth and throat. Then, it travels down into our lungs. The tar that we send down with every lungful of smoke coats everything in a black sticky slime. Therefore, oxygen has great difficulty breaking through the black sticky slime, resulting in smokers getting 15% less oxygen than anyone else.

Eventually, from time to come, your heart has to crank up its action to keep everything working. So why give your heart more work? Quit smoking now! Totally Wicked E Cigarette Review

Find alternatives

Here’s another way to quit smoking. “New age” treatments like acupuncture are worth the try. Besides, it is a painless treatment and is able to tackle addiction, relieve stress and improve your sleep patterns. This is an effective way to quit smoking as a professional acupuncturist change the energy flow during the treatment and this in turn reduced both your cravings and the tensions that come with giving up.

Another alternative to quit smoking is taking up yoga lessons. It may not be a direct method for giving up on smoking, but it can prove to be a useful ally. It is useful in the way that it increases the flow of endorphins through the body and thus creating a deep sense of well-being, which will be both relaxing and energizing. This is therefore a great alternative to a smoke as yoga gives you a natural high.

Record your quitting process on paper

Keeping a record of your struggle to quit smoking will help you to stay on track and give you something to be proud of. Since giving up smoking is a life-changing event, putting it down on paper is definitely worth it. Besides, this provides you an opportunity to reflect and process what has been happening to you. Moreover, a solution might emerge somewhere in the course of writing down a difficulty.

Therefore, keeping a diary might be useful if you ever want to quit smoking. Just keep one for a couple of weeks and you’ll start to notice patterns. You might just discover the days that you live without a smoke and thus carrying it out again to prevent you from smoking.

Quitting might not be as hard as you think. Before you lose hope, why not try the ways that are mentioned above and work towards your success? Totally Wicked E Cigarette Review

Smoking and dental health are more intimately connected than you

Smoking and dental health are more intimately connected than you

Smoking and dental health are more intimately connected than you would imagine

Imagine losing a portion of your cheek at the age of 18? Medical research indicates that smokers are six times more likely than nonsmokers to develop oral cancers. Even those addicted to smokeless tobacco (snuff or chewing tobacco) can develop cancers of the cheek, gums and lining of the lips, increasing the risk by about 50 times. Oral cancer is in fact one of the most devastating effects of smoking. In fact, the death rate from oral cancers (which includes cancers of the tongue, mouth, gums, tonsils and pharynx) exceeds the death rate from cervical cancer, according to experts.

Who is at risk?

It’s believed that the adolescents are at the maximum risk. Over the last 10 years the number of kids under 18 who become daily smokers increased by 70 per cent. Roughly 3,000 kids become regular smokers every day. Worse, almost 1/3 of them will die from a tobacco-related illness (Dental Health Foundation, http://healthclub.tk) The susceptibility to smoking starts around age 10 years and peaks by age 14 years in close to 60 per cent of the population. And once thy have experimented, approximately half continue to smoke and become addicted to the nicotine content in cigarettes. An adolescent, who thinks that the health problems of smoking can be alleviated, provided he or she can stop smoking before the age of 35, appears to be at much greater risk of experimentation. Furthermore, older the habit and more the number of cigarettes smoked in a day, harder is it to quit.

The risk of oral cancer in adolescents?

Approximately 75% of all oral cancers are associated with tobacco use or alcohol consumption. In fact, about 3 per cent of male and 2 per cent of female cancer sufferers have oral cancer. The death rate from oral cancer is also high. Only about 50 percent of people who get oral cancer survive for five years or more, in part because the disease often is not discovered until it is more advanced, according to a study carried in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology.

Early warning signs:

o Sticky tar deposits or brown staining on the teeth. Heavy smokers will have almost brown teeth. o ‘Smoker’s palate’ – red inflammation on the roof of the mouth o Delayed healing of the gums o Increased severity of gum disease o Bad breath or halitosis o Black hairy tongue o Oral lesions o Gum recession – with chewing tobacco at the site of the tobacco “wad”, the gums react by receding along the tooth root, exposing the root o Oral cancer

do young people smoke?

There are a number of complex and inter-relating factors that predispose young people to smoke, and these vary among individuals and among populations. However, years of research have identified certain factors that commonly play a role in smoking initiation. These include high levels of social acceptability for tobacco products, exposure and vulnerability to tobacco marketing efforts, availability and ease of access, role modeling by parents and other adults, and peer group use. A study in the United States found that among teens who smoke, 85 per cent chose the three most heavily advertised brands of cigarettes, compared to only 35 per cent of adults. Data suggest that children are more responsive than adults to the messages and images contained in tobacco advertisements. Past studies have also shown that influence by their peers is likely the biggest motivator leading to adolescent’s experimentation with smoking. Girls in fact are more susceptible to such influences, a trend that carries over to high school according to past findings.

What dentists and dental associations can do?

Small wonder that the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) has now constituted a task force to push its three-step approach to smoking cessation intervention: “Ask. Advise. Refer.” Efforts are meanwhile afoot to develop protocols, scripts, and a toolkit to facilitate smoking cessation intervention by dental hygienists. In November 2003, ADHA also received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Smoking Cessation Leadership Center at the University of California, San Francisco to launch a nationwide effort by dental hygienists to promote smoking cessation.

Smoking is no doubt a serious health problem for our adolescents. However, since abstinence is a long-drawn process, our cessation services need to be made more attractive to teens. So far, interventions with the youth have been relatively brief, without focus and without any longer term support systems. It would also be helpful to know what motivates adolescents to want to quit smoking. Ready to quit smoking?

If you smoke and you’re ready to quit, come find out what the top stop-smoking products are at http://healthclub.tk. These products are ranked and reviewed by the ex-smokers who had success with these products.
