Although smoking tend to be viewed as an accepted form of lifestyle for many people, the increase number of reports and medical researches that now show how smoking has been linked to a number of different diseases and ailments that could have been easily prevented, more and more smokers are now desiring to quit the habit to live longer and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

 

Smoking is an addiction and for this reason, many smokers that have resolved to quit the habit find themselves having a very difficult road in quitting the habit with the onset of many of the withdrawal symptoms that they experience the moment that they decide to quit and throw away the cigarettes. There are a number of different quit smoking products available on the market, but many of these products actually contain minute traces of the same substances that you would find in cigarettes. So while they are not really smoking, their bodies are still being given the same addictive and harmful substances that can lead to a number of different health risks and illnesses in the future.

Start with Yourself

If you have decided to stop smoking, you have to make a firm resolution with yourself that you would indeed stop smoking for good. In fact, the best way to quit smoking is to have a sheer amount of will power by keeping yourself resolved in your promise to yourself that you will stop smoking for good. Having this determination in yourself will help you go through the process despite the availability of cigarettes in your neighborhood and the onslaught of the different withdrawal symptoms you may experience.

Getting your family and friends involved in your quest to help you stop smoking can help you get over the habit in no time. Many smokers who are trying to quit the habit would often sign up in support groups so that they would be able to get the needed encouragement in order to continue on the process of quitting smoking for good. By having your family and friends there encouraging you and supporting you as you kick the habit, you will find the process a lot easier.

Keeping yourself educated and well-informed is one of the best ways to quit smoking. One more is feeling deprived. You liked to smoke, it was a pleasure once. You’ll want to replace that pleasure with something low cal and very good for you.

The most important reason individuals acquire weight when stopping smoking is chemical. Nicotine tickled a really important aspect of the brain. Let’s call it the “pleasure center” for ease of use. Nicotine made it really feel great and it made you feel very good. Doing without makes it unhappy and crave something else. That something else is typically sugar and fat. They also make you feel good. See it is not just your willpower! Nicotine, alcohol, sugar, any variety of addiction fuels this pleasure center and gives you a high.

So what do you do?

Here are two things you could do that may allow you to stop smoking and not turn in to a fat blob.

Water. Its low cost. Its effortless. Its calorie free. Drink lots of it. The recommended 8 glasses a day at least. Water assists flush toxins out of your body, helping get rid of nicotine and company more rapidly. Toss in a slice of lemon or lime to make it much more appealing. As opposed to reaching for a cigarette, reach for your water bottle. I fill mine up in the morning when I make my coffee, toss in a slice of lime and my water bottle sits on my desk reminding me to drink. Do whatever works for you.

Exercise. No you don’t have to grow to be a gym rat, just get moving. If you exercise you release natural endorphins that tickle that pleasure center inside your brain. There’s also the added benefit of burning calories! Start with a 5-minute walk. No huge deal. Next week it may well be 10, next year who knows!

I suggest walking since its uncomplicated, it doesn’t require special equipment, new clothes or a fitness center membership. Its something you could do alone, along with your buddies, along with your kids, along with your spouse, along with your dog, along with your hamster. If walking isn’t your thing, uncover something else you like and that fits together with your life. Get out and get moving. Use the time to take into consideration what you are going to do with the dollars you are saving by not smoking!

Its not easy to stop smoking for good. Its difficult. Been there and got the T-shirt. By replacing a bad habit with a good one it is possible to boost your wellness and your outlook on the world. You can Do It!

For smokers, few things have the allure of lighting up that first cigarette in the morning.  The smoking process can be almost mystical, or romantic, as the flame caresses the end of the cigarette. Nothing quite matches the taste as you draw that smoke down the cigarette into your mouth and then down into your lungs.  The calming, soothing sensation helps start your day, helps deal with stressful situations and generally makes you feel better.  However, that romanticized view is more than a bit distorted. Smoking has terrible, even frightening side effects.

Tips to Stop Smoking for Good

With so many tips and suggestions on how to stop smoking it is really easy to see why so many people really do not quit.  The vast majority of people are completely confused by the entire process!  What of the conflicting messages passed around?  The fact is that with so much information passed around that is confusing to people it is often much easier to just continue smoking and hoping for a simple solution.  Actually taking the necessary steps to really quit smoking is not easy.  It means coming to terms with the fact that stopping smoking really is best for you, as well as your health.

Most people are readily aware that stopping smoking can improve their health, but learning how to really conquer the urges to smoke is not easy.  With so many temptations circulating around, as well as the stresses of daily life it is easy to see why jumping into a pack of cigarettes seems like a good idea.

Tip #1 You need a good reason to quit.  Simply deciding to quit because the sky is blue is not a sufficient reason.  The need to quit smoking is obvious, but the desire to quit needs to come from inside in order for the process to be successful.

Tip #2  Look for small rewards that you can give yourself as you make progress.  You are not likely to just quit cold turkey with no complications.  Set up small rewards that will help you to want to make progress towards ultimately quitting.  This can be a great motivation to keep you on target.

Tip #3  Plan out your quitting strategy.  Decide how you want to try to quit and stick to it.  Set a specific amount of time for your plan.  If after a time, say six weeks you have not quit, work on a new plan.  This will allow ample time to try each method, while still giving yourself flexibility to try something else.

Tip #4  Work to overcome your struggles.  If you are smoking due to stressful things in your life, you need to deal with the stress before you can successfully quit.  Regardless of the reason why you are smoking, it needs to be dealt with in able to quit for good.

Tip #5  Set up a punishment for yourself.  For example, if you generally stop at Starbucks each day for a coffee you might consider skipping that on days when you have fallen short of your goals for smoking.  Whatever punishment you select, make sure it is something that you care about.

Tip #6  Seek out help from your friends and family.  You need support as you are trying to quit, and this will help you to ensure that you are not alone in the entire process.

Tip #7  Look for someone to quit with you.  If you are entirely on your own, you are going to be much more likely to slip back into smoking.  If someone is working with you and holding you accountable, you are more likely to struggle to succeed.  Working to quit smoking is not easy, but hard tasks are much easier to accomplish with a partner.

Tip #8  Ensure you are getting plenty of sleep.  The job of quitting smoking is quite difficult.  If you are not getting the rest you need, you are much more likely to be cranky, upset and angry with the world.  This is very counterproductive to your goal of quitting smoking for good.

Tip #9  Aim to quit for good.  This might seem a bit strange, but if you are just planning to quit for a weekend you are not going to put much effort into the process.  If you are planning to quit for good, a lot more time and effort is going to go into the process as well as your plan to quit.

Tip #10  Look for ways to take your mind off cigarettes.  If you are always thinking about cigarettes, you may find that you are much more tempted to smoke.  Reading a book, exercising, talking on the phone, surfing the internet and even cooking are all great ways to occupy your mind and keep from thinking about when your last cigarette was.

First let’s define addiction. The type of addiction I want to talk about right now is the physical addiction, not the mental. We’ll deal with the mental aspects of addiction in a moment. For now, let’s just address the physical aspects of addiction.

Who tells us that smoking is addictive?

The Tobacco Companies.

They are very certain that cigarettes are addictive, but I must share with you – thousands of people quit smoking every day, and not one of them experiences any kind of physical withdrawal symptoms that you would see in a normally addicting chemical like cocaine or heroin. Again, by definition, when I refer to addiction, what I’m talking about is the physical malfunction that bodies go through when being deprived of a substance upon which they have become dependent.

No one’s body malfunctions when they stop smoking cigarettes.

In fact, think about it, how long can you go without a cigarette?

Do you sleep at night? How many hours? Do you smoke in your sleep? No? People who are truly addicted to a chemical like heroin or meth cannot sleep through the night, they have to get up to take a hit, just to go back to sleep. No one does that with cigarettes.

What about a movie? If you go to a really good movie, you can sit through the entire show without a cigarette, yet most people don’t think they can go 2 hours without smoking.

What about a long plane flight? You can sit on a plane for many hours without smoking.

Doesn’t this make you wonder how addictive cigarettes really are?

Exactly! Now how many cocaine addicts would say they can go for hours or days without taking a hit? How many heroin or meth addicts? For that matter, how many alcoholics?

You see, even with just looking at your own life you have demonstrated that cigarettes do not have the same addictive characteristics biologically that truly addictive drugs do.

Now, I’m not into conspiracy theories or anything, but think about it, who benefits most by us thinking that cigarettes are addictive? The cigarette manufacturers! Wouldn’t the best sales pitch in the world for any consumable product be, “If you start using these in your teens, you will smoke them for the rest of your life.” It’s got to make you think, doesn’t it?

In fact, when I talk to people who become non-smokers, the most severe physical problems I’ve ever had people tell me about is headaches – which were more than likely stress related anyway. I also hear about sore throats and sometimes shaking hands.

But let’s be honest about these so-called “symptoms.” Are they not simply irritations instead? Irritation and malfunction are not the same things. They’re not even in the same ballpark! Those symptoms do not cause malfunction. They just cause discomfort, which is not a word used to describe the addictive withdrawals from any other truly addictive drug.

I don’t know whether you have ever seen anyone on meth but it’s not a pretty sight. For example, the average meth addict if he hasn’t had his regular fix will experience some terrible withdrawal symptoms such as sweats, shakes, heart palpitations, nausea, even hallucinations.

Now when was the last time you saw someone experience anything like that when they tried to quit smoking? I mean, they might get a little grumpy, or irritable, but they don’t experience any of the physical symptoms that someone on heroin gets do they?

You’ve probably heard about people who contracted lung cancer from breathing in second-hand smoke. Now the nicotine and all the chemicals are strong enough to kill them, but they weren’t strong enough to addict them. For years people passively breathed in all that nicotine but it doesn’t make them want to smoke.

So if it isn’t a physical addiction, what is it?

It’s a mental habit.

When you wake up in the morning and you have that first cigarette you are reinforcing the habit of smoking. Then 20 (or so) times during the course of the day you are reinforcing the habit of smoking.

Every time the hand goes up to the mouth, about 10 times with each cigarette, that’s about 200 times a day you are reinforcing the habit. What else do you do 200 times a day? Nothing, except breathe.

So it’s a strongly conditioned habit. And the only reason you are still doing it is because you are still doing it. And the only way to stop is to just stop. Cutting down doesn’t work. That’s like telling an alcoholic to cut down their drinking. They can do it for a while but it soon creeps back. So you have to just quit smoking.

And because it’s just a mental habit you can break it easily (when you know how).

Then you have things like nicotine patches and gum. Would you believe that patches and gum provide a massive dose of nicotine, one day’s supply of nicotine patches is equivalent in nicotine terms to about six packs of cigarettes a day. Now that’s standard cigarettes so that’s about 12 packs of low tar cigarettes and about 18 packs of the ultra lights.

So how come any body who has tried patches or gum and so is getting more nicotine in their blood stream than they’ve ever had before, still reverts back to smoking!?

Why on earth would you still want a cigarette?

Because it’s not nicotine addiction, if it were the patches would work.

According to some of the research that’s been done, if you try to quit smoking just by using will power about 3% – 6% of people will stop. If you quit smoking using the gum about 10% of people will stop, an improvement but not much of one. If you quit smoking using patches then about 10% – 15% of people will stop, again an improvement but not much of one.

And if you look at those figures around the other way, about 85% to 90% of people who try nicotine replacement therapy fail. Now that means it doesn’t work.

So that means the problem with cigarettes is not the nicotine, the problem with cigarettes is the habit of smoking.

Of waking up in the morning and having that first cigarette at the same time every day and then 20 or so times during the day having a cigarette at those particular times – with a cup of tea, after a meal, driving a car, when the phone rings, in stressful situations, with alcohol etc.

The act of smoking becomes linked in your mind with these daily situations and so they become a trigger to smoke. This is what a habit is.

So the key to quit smoking for good is using a method that focuses on removing the mental habit of smoking. This is the key to quitting and staying a non-smoker for the rest of your (now longer) life!

Cardiovascular Health

Smoking aside, cardiovascular exercise is immensely beneficial to the human body, blood flow, heart disease prevention, positive mood, sense of well-being, etc. When you stop smoking and you commit to an exercise schedule as one of your quit smoking tools, you will help your body recover from nicotine dependence more quickly; and your cravings will not only be less severe, they will also be experienced less frequently.

There are numerous ways to engage in cardiovascular exercising and some of them include: Aerobics, biking, calisthenics (blurpees, jumping jacks, etc.), dancing, jogging, karate, kickboxing, running, swimming, and more. You don’t necessarily have to join a gym in order to get cardiovascular exercise; there are channels on dish that have interactive programs like aerobics, dancing, and yoga or you could just put together an up-beat music collection on your iPod or CD player and simply dance your own creative way.

Your brain naturally produces neurologically transmitted chemicals (dopamine, endorphins, etc.) that send messages to the sensory department of your brain. The more your cigarettes take over the manufacturing of these mood controlling aspects of your body, your brain stops functioning properly and ceases to ‘recycle’ neuro-transmitted chemicals.

In the early stages of withdrawal from nicotine, your brain is learning to cope without cigarettes. When you exercise at this very important crossroad of your stop smoking journey, you are forcing your body to naturally produce endorphins and other chemicals that may have not have otherwise been manufactured that early (comfortably, anyway).

Detoxification

When you stop smoking your body begins to ‘dump’ nicotine primarily through urine and sweat. Exercising to quit smoking is strongly suggested because it causes you to sweat profusely, thus cleansing your body of nicotine more quickly.

Improved Lung Capacity

Any time you exercise you are forced to breathe deeper to keep oxygen flowing through your body. This is excellent training for your lungs! Although it takes years to reverse the significant damage smoking has caused your lungs, treating them right when you first stop smoking will help you recover more quickly.

Daily Control Over Idle Time

Down time is a dangerous adversary when you stop smoking. By incorporating an exercise routine to which you are committed you will leave less room in your schedule to be tempted to smoke a cigarette because you have nothing to do.

Long-Term Rewards

If you stay committed to your stop smoking exercise plan your appearance, lungs, mood, and overall health will be much better. It’s easier to prevent a nicotine relapse if you are constantly reaping the rewards of not smoking. 

If you are not accustomed to exercising, start small. You don’t want to over-exert yourself too early for a couple of reasons. The first reason to start exercising minimally and gradually increase is to prevent soreness or stiffness the following day. You can also prevent consequential muscle aches by stretching properly before and after your exercise routine.

Another reason why you may not want to rush in with a ‘no pain, no gain’ mentality is because you want exercising to be an enjoyable experience. If you max out on your initial efforts, your brain will equate exercising with pain and that equation may prevent you from developing and committing to a routine.

If you were looking for a wake-up call to get you to quit smoking for good, you’ve found it. I have compiled a list of the cold hard facts regarding smoking as well as the impact it will have on your life if you don’t break free from the habit.

Here are some sobering statistics to start things off:

-Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year.

-Current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030.

-Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States.

-In the United States, cigarette smoking is responsible for about one in five deaths annually, or about 438,000 deaths per year.

There is no doubt smoking is a killer. On average, smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonsmokers! That translates to 12 to 14 minutes taken from your life with each cigarette! Each and every one of those cigarettes you smoke is bringing you closer and closer to an early grave.

Some other Reasons to Quit Smoking for Good:

-Food doesn’t taste as good to smokers. When a smoker’s nasal cavity is under the effects of the chemical products found within cigarettes their ability to savor various tastes/aromas is lessened.

-If you smoke, your body will require more sleep than a non-smoker. Additionally, smokers don’t sleep as well as non-smokers

-Smokers find themselves sick more often than non-smokers. The average smoker misses 7 1/2 work days a year compared to 4 1/2 for the non-smoker

-Smoking makes people more irritable and argumentative, in part due to subconscious knowledge of the above mentioned points.

-A correlation has been found between smoking and brain damage/premature senility

This is just touching the tip of the ice-berg. There are plenty more reasons to quit the habit once and for all. We may know smoking is not healthy, but it helps to stop and look at these facts to wake us up to the reality of what we are doing to ourselves.

Hopefully the above has opened your eyes some and given you additional insight into how smoking is affecting your life. It is never to late to make a change…to quit smoking for good.

Quit smoking for good might be your game plan. But first lets look at why you are here. If you are here it means that you have tried to quit before am I right? So here is what I suggest. Don’t quit smoking! Crazy right? Well, not so much just keep reading.

 

Ok, How can someone NOT quit smoking, but not die?

This is what I propose. Try smoking electronic cigarettes. If you know you have zero will power. In fact suck a small amount of will power that you type quit smoking for good into a search engine. Then maybe quiting is just not for you. Let me tell you something, smoking is not bad, if it doesn’t kill you!

 

So what is an E-cigarette?

An E-Cigarette otherwise known as an electronic cigarette, is a healthier way to smoke. See when you smoke an electronic cigarette, you are only getting the nicotine, and we already know that nicotine isn’t what kills people! What else is there to know about these “e-cigarettes”?

 

Can it help you quit?

The answer is YES! Studies, and surveys take show that once a person starts using these electronic cigarettes that there cravings went down, and some even say it helped them quit all together!

 

If you smoke E-cigarette you can expect to save up to 70% of what you regularly spend buying cigarette’s.

So, if it is so cheap, and if you kick the risk of dying from it, and if you still get that same GREAT feeling from it. Then why not do it? Now you don’t have to quit smoking for good!

Quit Smoking For Good, Really . . . Without Expensive Patches And Pills

My wife and I both quit smoking for good two years ago–after being heavy smokers for nearly 30 years.  She did it her way, and I did it mine.  Both ways worked, but her way was harder and cost a bunch of money.  

My wife had tried to quit smoking before, several times, and had failed every time.  For the first big attempt at quitting smoking, she tried patches.  These seemed work for a while.  But then I found her smoking in the bathroom.  (I had been wondering why she always turned on the exhaust fan when she entered the bathroom.)  And then she admitted that those expensive nicotine patches just made her want to smoke more.  So instead of quitting or even cutting down her cigarette consumption, she wound up smoking more (but secretively this time) than she ever had.  

Then, two years ago, my wife suffered a severe back injury, and that’s what made her finally decide to quit.  While she was in flat on her fractured back in the hospital and pumped full of morphine, she had no desire for a cigarette.  But when she got home, the cravings returned full force and the battle began.  So she used the pills prescribed by the doctors.

What my wife used was a well known regimen of pills, constructed around a progression of pill ingestion, that is supposed to help with anxiety and suppress nicotine cravings.  The pills worked, I guess, but the side effects were hard to deal with.  It affected her ability to taste, and food didn’t taste right to her for about six months.  She also had frequent bad dreams–frightening, night sweat-inducing dreams that she tried to forget and was reluctant to talk about.  And to top it all off, I spent about 0 on those infernal pills.

I had tried to quit several time before, too.  I tried to do it cold turkey and just tough it out through sheer will power.  And . . . I failed miserably every time.  The first two days were always easy, but the third day–that dreadful third day–was when things got tough.  I got nervous and irritable, and I was restless.  So I drank more coffee than usual and grew even more irritable and short tempered.  And because I was jacked on caffeine, I really wanted a cigarette.  One of those times, my wife and daughter came to me and said this:  “OK, you’ve got two choices.  You can either go buy you some cigarettes–or you can find a new place to live.”  So, naturally, I got in the car, drove to the convenience store, and bought a pack of cigarettes.

When I finally did quit smoking for good, I thought I did it cold turkey through sheer will power.  Looking back now, though, I see that I didn’t really do it that way.  What happened was I had unwittingly applied some of the principles and techniques of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

I changed my self-perception and began to see myself as a non-smoker–not just a person making a mighty effort of will to reluctantly give up an incorrigible habit.  I used confidence-inspiring and success-promoting self-talk.  I began to think differently, altering my emotional responses to sensory stimuli and smoking triggers.  I examined and modeled what other people had done to successfully stop smoking.  I was unconsciously using NLP.

I wish now that I had known more about NLP and about some of the proven stop-smoking programs based on it.  It really seems to work.  And I know from our own first-hand experience that quitting by means of NLP is a lot safer and lot cheaper than the chemical-based methods.
